Ahhh Dubrovnik. The best preserved medieval city in the world. Known as King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, this Croatian city is high on many traveler’s list. And it’s easy to see why! The stunning cliff sides, scaling fortress walls and crashing ocean views are unlike anything else in the world!
When To Go to Dubrovnik?
We went during peak season (July and August) which is full of tourists and the sun is a killer. If you have the availability, go while it is still warm but with less crowds- June or September ideally!
Not A Budget Destination
While a trip to Dubrovnik is unforgettable, it certainly isn’t as affordable as other destinations. It’s got some of the highest prices on the Adriatic Coast. While it is still possible to do on a budget, it’s more challenging because restaurant prices will be higher, drinks cost more and even the hostels are a little pricey.
Where To Stay in Dubrovnik?
We opted to stay in an Airbnb outside of Old Town to save money! It had incredible views over the city and was still within walking distance of Old Town so it was the perfect fit.
With so many Airbnb options, it’s easy to find one with a breathtaking view for sunset and under $50 a night! If you remember my Instagram stories from Dubrovnik, we watched the sunset over the cliffs and ocean each night from our patio. What To Do In Dubrovnik
Buy the Dubrovnik Card
If you plan to walk the city walls (and you definitely should!!) it’s a better value to buy the Dubrovnik Card. This pass includes access to the city walls and other historical sites. You can purchase a one, three or seven day option.
One day pass includes: Free entrance to 6 museums, 2 galleries and the city walls. 24h bus rides on public transport.
Truthfully the museums are relatively small so we were able to see the majority in one day. Even though we opted to walk everywhere and skip using the bus, the card still saves you money since the one day pass is only slightly more than a single entry ticket to the city walls.

Book a kayak excursion to see the walled city from the water
Kayaking around the walled fortress is one of the most popular and highly rated activities in Dubrovnik. There are a number of options you can book through Airbnb Experiences.

Go on a Game Of Thrones Tour
While they have a free self guided online tour available, you might enjoy the insight from a local guide- many who were in town during the filming of the show!
Visit the Ombla river
Just a short drive from town, you can get lovely views over the shortest river in Croatia – some argue in the world!
Walk past the old abandoned buildings (one is an old pasta factory!) and you’ll see this rock ledge which makes for an excellent photo spot! This tiny river is only 98 feet long but is a major source of drinking water for Dubrovnik.
Find this spot: Type in “Ombla river spring” into Google Maps
Address: Put Izvora, 20236, Croatia
