If you’re looking for a quaint, charming getaway in Minnesota, Stillwater is just the place. This little river town is rich with history, full of old Victorian homes and has a lovely downtown area with antique shops, art galleries and ice cream parlors.
Stillwater is considered the birthplace of Minnesota and is one of the oldest towns in the state. As you drive the up and down the hills around town, you’ll pass by a number of remarkably well-preserved Victorian homes that have been turned into bed and breakfasts.
If you’re looking for a great mid-range priced option, then I highly recommend the lovely Aurora Staples Inn.
This beautiful bed and breakfast is fully styled with Victorian period decor but is furnished with modern amenities like whirlpool tubs and gas fireplaces. So you get all the historical charm of the past but all the luxury of the present!
There are 5 different rooms available onsite. The Giverny, Peacock, St. Croix Suite, Riverview Suite and the Carriage House. Each is decorated in their own unique way.

When you arrive, slip your shoes off and get a quick tour of the house. After that, you’ll receive a complimentary glass of local wine from St. Croix Vineyards or a glass of beer from nearby Liftbridge Brewery.
Relax, explore or unwind!
Aurora Staples Inn is a great place to unwind. You can sit on the porch with a glass of wine, walk through the garden or play a board game in the living room. The property has so much more character than a standard hotel.
If you can, I recommend staying two nights so you have enough time to see everything in Stillwater as well.
Aurora Staples Inn is the perfect getaway for a girl’s trip, a wedding anniversary or a special occasion.
My best friend and I came to Stillwater for a girls trip but this property would be perfect for couples, anniversary celebrations or anyone looking for a fun getaway in Minnesota.
You can also rent the entire property for bachelorette parties, bridal showers, wedding parties or family reunions etc.
The Carriage House Suite
While all the rooms at the inn are lovely, we stayed in the Carriage House. This is the ultimate place to stay for privacy because you are actually in the building that was once used for storing the original family’s horse drawn carriage.
Many of the bed and breakfasts in Stillwater have a carriage house. Wealthy homeowners needed somewhere to store their carriage but now it’s common for them to be converted!
Whirlpool tubs and a gas fireplace
The bed was very comfortable but the real highlight of the room was the large whirlpool tub next to the fireplace. Bring a bottle of wine to sip while you take a bubble bath!
Even though it was summer, we had the fire going because it provided such a lovely atmosphere. I’d love to come back and stay in the winter when the grounds are covered in snow and curl up by the fireplace then!

In the wake up of the coronavirus pandemic, breakfast is no longer served in the main area but instead, delivered directly to your room. Say hello to breakfast in bed!

Just 3 blocks from downtown Stillwater
With free parking at the Aurora Staples Inn, leave your car and walk the short distance into downtown Stillwater. There is so much to see and do in this little town if you know where to look.

- Get ice cream at Nelson’s Ice Cream
- Go on a ghost tour
- Shop in downtown Stillwater
- Indulge your sweet tooth at Candyland
- Have a drink at Maple Island Brewery
- Hike to the Arcola High Bridge – Type “Arcola Day Use Area” into your GPS to find the trailhead, then take the trail to the far left

Great article. In 2002 my daughter and husband spent their wedding night at this lovely B&B. One minor correction, Stillwater was the location of the territorial convention to make Minnesota a state 1848. It was a city long before 1884.
