Sleeping Bag

I have had this sleeping pad for the last year and love it! It packs down to a tiny size and yet provides a great added layer of padding. It is durable and has never ripped despite camping on uneven, rocky surfaces.

This camping pillow is lightweight and comfortable if you don’t have room for a full size pillow in your luggage or backpack.

On backpacking trips, I often skip the pillow and just use my jacket or sweatshirt folded up for a pillow, whatever works best for you!

Head Lamp

When the sun sets and you’re hanging out at a dark campsite, you’ll want a headlamp to illuminate things so you can still have your hands free.

This rechargeable headlamp is situated in a cute black beanie. I love the way this one fits & is easily recharged!

If you go with a traditional headlamp, just make sure you pack extra batteries.

Water Bottle

Of course, you’ll want to make sure you pack a water bottle. But if you’ll be doing a lot of hiking on your trip, you might want to pack a hydration bladder. I love this one! It flows easily and is super durable.

Depending where you camp, this might not be needed but it’s good to be prepared!

Tent Fan

While a tent fan is definitely optional, I find it helps on a hot summer night to get air circulating in my tent. It also provides white noise making it easier to fall asleep at a campsite.

Whether you choose rechargeable or battery operated, I recommend getting on that also has a light. It’s helpful to illuminate your tent from above at night if you need to find something.

Ear Plugs/Headphones

You may want headphones or earplugs for your campsite. If other campers are around, tents are obviously very thin and you may hear them chatting or even snoring at night. If you’re a light sleeper, it’s a good idea to pack ear plugs or headphones so you can get a good night’s sleep!

Backpack

I find it’s often easier to camp with a backpack then to bring a rolling suitcase. Sometimes campsites require you to cart-in or travel over rough terrain. I love my North Face backpacking bag but there are many non-name brand options as well.

Day bag

Leave your suitcase or backpacking bag at the tent and just bring a day bag out on hikes so you can have your portable charger, water bottle & everything you need with you.

My favorite leggings & hiking gear comes from Fabletics! I am obsessed with the Power Hold and Boost II leggings.

Just avoid cotton for hiking, stick to synthetic fabrics that will dry quickly and not hold moisture.

This “glamping” (glamorous +camping) is located near Clearwater, Minnesota on an organic farm. The owners Liz and Curtis are incredibly kind and welcoming. And there are plenty of adorable four-legged friends to greet you when you arrive. Goats, sheep, dogs, cats, roosters… you name it!

The real highlight of my time here was wandering around and meeting all the animals. The goats are impossibly cute and fun to photograph. The pigs are a noisy bunch and the dog will instantly be your best friend. And in the morning you may be woken up by the cockadoodle-doo of a rooster!

The farm is home to a wide variety of produce that you can access to cook at the campsite. And not only your typical Minnesotan vegetables but a large range of unusual crops as well!

Gather around the campfire

In addition to your main tent and kitchen tent, you will also have a fire pit at your glamping site. Firewood is available for purchase so build a fire and enjoy the night! Afterall, you won’t have Wifi so it’s a great chance to disconnect and get away from your devices and screens.

Stargaze

The stars are breathtaking at this Minnesota glamping site!

You will be provided with several lanterns and your tent has fairy lights that are solar powered so you have enough of a light source to see but not so much that the starry sky is ruined by light pollution like it often is in cities and towns.

The properties range from a scenic place to set up your own tent on someone’s yard for a few dollars to full blown- glamping resorts.

If you’re interested in backpacking, most likely the trails that come to mind aren’t in Minnesota. With popular movies and books like Wild, even non-backpackers have heard of the Pacific Crest or Appalachian Trail.

And while the Pacific Northwest gets a lot of the glory when it comes to scenic views and backcountry camping, did you know Minnesota is home to an incredible thru-hiking trail that is over 300 miles long? That’s right! The Superior Hiking Trail is legendary.

Whether you’re a Minnesota native, live out of state, new to backpacking or an experienced thru-hiker, here are 8 amazing reason to try backpacking in Minnesota!

Backpacking the Superior Hiking Trail in September 2020

1. Explore The Most Gorgeous Area of Minnesota:
The Superior Hiking Trail

If you haven’t visited Minnesota’s North Shore, I have to be honest…you are missing out!! It’s an underrated gem that so few non-Minnesotans even know exist.

The North Shore is considered the area from Duluth running north to the Canadian border along Lake Superior and scenic Highway 61. This part of Minnesota is full of rocky cliff sides, historic lighthouses, freezing cold winters and beautiful landscapes.

Lucky for us, there is a well-mainted backpacking route that cuts through the heart of this stunning area! The Superior Hiking Trail actually connects seven state parks, 94 free campsites and countless waterfalls and scenic overlooks. This is Minnesota at it’s finest. You will not be disappointed!!

2. It’s Free And No Reservations or Permits Are Required

If you’re looking for a budget trip, it doesn’t get much cheaper than completely free!

You can park overnight for free at some of the trailheads (like Oberg Mountain!) and all of the campsites are completely free.

You might need to invest in some backpacking gear if you’re new to the backcountry (you can use my SHT backpacking checklist) but other than that, you’ll have no expenses once you hit the trail.

Best of all, you don’t have to hassle with any sort of permits. Just show up with your backpack and go!

Other famous treks like Arizona’s Havasu Falls are getting exceedingly difficult to get a permit. It’s competitive and expensive to even get approved.

Well, that is not the case with the Superior Hiking Trail!

3. Disconnect From Technology

As a travel blogger I spend a lot of time on my phone, laptop and Instagram. One of the best parts about this trip was spending 3 days without technology. It was revitalizing, refreshing and reminded me that I should be trying to fall asleep every night without staring at a screen.

Some of the ladies in our group had service on the trails. But since it’s backcountry, we didn’t have a way to charge our phones aside from portable chargers. It’s a rare occurrence to have 8 adults together for a weekend and no one is spends any time staring into their phone.

I came back from the trip refreshed, motivated and inspired like never before!

4. Meet Amazing People On The Trail

What do you get when you combine “Minnesota nice” and the already friendly, outgoing nature of thru-hikers? Well, I learned the word for it… an amazing “tramily” AKA “trail family”.

But in all seriousness, the campsites are social atmospheres. And when you inevitably meet awesome people, you instantly have something in common. It’s so easy to chat about the trail, your gear, the adventure you had that day… it’s so easy to connect with other thru-hikers!

It really does become a “trail family” because people are quick to help one another, welcome you into the community and form bonds.

5. See Fall Colors Like You’ve Never Experienced

Fall in Minnesota is nothing short of magic. When you’re standing on a peak you’ve just climbed and you’re looking over a sea of red and orange trees, there is no better feeling.

The air is crisp and yes, the nights are cold. So just come prepared and pack warm clothes to keep cozy in your tent.

Not to mention it’s bug free after the first frost and it won’t be humid like the summer months! September is the perfect time to go.

7. Overnight Parking & Shuttle Services
Make Planning Your Trip Easy

If you need an itinerary, check out the 3 day/ 2 night route we hiked. This includes easy overnight parking at Oberg Mountain Trailhead.

Since the SHT is a straight line and not a loop, you will need transportation back to your car at the end. Not to worry, there are a number of easy to schedule and inexpensive options.

You can reserve a shuttle back to your car here.

If you use this shuttle service (there are a few options) just know reservations must be placed at least four days in advance.

You can also buy easy to follow maps of the Superior Hiking Trail on the official website if you want to plot a different route.

6. You’ll Get Addicted To The Freedom

As a full time nomad who is already in love with the freedom that travel provides, I didn’t think I could find anything that made me feel more free than full-time travel….but I was wrong.

Backpacking the SHT is the ultimate sense of freedom. When there is no set plan and the open trail is ahead of you, you can set off at whatever pace you like with everything you need right there on your back.

We had plans to camp at a different campsite originally but wound up staying somewhere else entirely. This is easy to do because again, no reservations are required and there are many campsites scattered along the trail. Grab your compass and your guide book and just hit the trail!

As you hike along, you’ll see signs indicating when the next campsite is so it’s easy to adjust your itinerary as you go if need be!

8. Build Your Confidence Through New Skills

If you’re new to backpacking, you might feel nervous for your first trip. That’s understandable. A lot of people feel that way leading up to their initial trip, myself included!

But once you go and realize that you are in fact capable of doing hard things, you will experience a crazy confidence boost. I couldn’t believe how strong, capable and independent I felt after just a 3 day trip.

Now I know I can filter water from a stream and not get sick. I can properly hang and store food away from bears. I can hike over 20 miles in a weekend and still feel AMAZING afterwards.

The skills you learn will lead to an increase in confidence in all areas of your life, not just backpacking. I felt more sure of myself and more independent after spending time out on the trails. It’s addicting!

Superior Hiking Trail: 3 Day Itinerary

The Superior Hiking Trail 3 Day Itinerary

The legendary Superior Hiking Trail runs 300+ miles north and south along the coast of Minnesota’s Lake Superior. If you planned to hike the entire route, it would take you anywhere from 2-4 weeks.

However if you’re looking for a great introduction to the trail or a route you can do over a single weekend, here is our complete Superior Hiking Trail 3 Day itinerary!

We started at Oberg Mountain and ended at Caribou Trail. Here’s everything you need to know so you can plan your own adventure along this route of the SHT.

If you’re looking for a great hotel before your hike, I highly suggest Mountain Inn. It’s only a few minutes from the Oberg Trailhead. The staff is amazing and they have a great outdoor area with a grill, campfire, picnic tables, hammocks and more!

Day 1: Start at Oberg Mountain

You can park your car overnight at the Oberg Mountain Trailhead. There is an outhouse there but no water source. So fill up your water bottle & camelback before you arrive!

On busy weekends the parking lot may be quite full. We arrived around 9:30am on a Friday and found spots. However Saturdays in the middle of the day might be harder!

10am: Hike the Oberg Loop Spur Trail

Set off following the Superior Hiking Trail signs and do not miss the Oberg Loop on this route! It is one of the most scenic loops in the entire itinerary. It’s an additional 2.6 miles but definitely worth it.

When our trip was done, I hiked this spur trail again before leaving for the weekend because it was SO GOOD.

This route is popular because it gives incredible views over Lake Superior and beyond.

During the fall, the colors here are insane. There will be a lot of families and day hikers on this route but once you finish this loop, you can head onto the official Superior Hiking Trail and start heading north towards where you will be camping.

11:30am: Hike the 6.4 miles north towards Mystery Mountain

Enjoy the day, it’s a beautiful hike! During the fall you will walk under canopies of bright yellow, orange and red tree tops.

The trail is interesting, challenging and fun.

Keep following the blue paint on the trees and don’t be afraid to ask other hikers if you feel you need clarification on which way the trail continues.

Fortunately the trail only runs north and south. But keep an eye on where you’re going so you don’t accidentally start off on a spur trail you didn’t intend to hike.

Overall, the Superior Hiking Trail is relatively easy to follow. But if you have a compass (and you should since it’s part of the 10 essentials!) you’ll be able to double check that you’re traveling north.

Camp at the Mystery Mountain campsite

We arrived at camp around 4:00pm. This gave us plenty of time to set up our tents, walk to the small water source to purify more drinking water and cook dinner before it got dark.

The campsites are communal and need no reservations or permits. They are totally free. How great is that?!

It’s a social atmosphere though so plan to share the fire pit with other thru-hikers.

Change out of your hiking shoes (helloooooo comfy camp shoes!) and get your warm clothes on for the night.

Remember to set your bear hang far enough away from camp. Unfortunately, the trees at Mystery Mountain aren’t ideal for a bear hang. We struggled to find a branch that was the correct height and distance from the tree base. The people in our group with bear canisters had an easier time storing food at this SHT campsite. I suggest walking down the path as if you are continuing on the trail, you’ll have better luck finding a tree that way.

There is an outdoor latrine here but it is VERY basic. In fact, there is no walls offering any sort of privacy and it happens to be within view of the communal fire pit. One thru-hiker at our camp hung an REI tarp to give the bathroom some privacy but otherwise plan to do your business in the woods or once it gets dark.

The water source will require you to continue along the SHT for another half mile to a small creek/pond. Always treat your water in the backcountry or you could wind up seriously ill. I used tablets but many of the other girls on my trip used filter systems.

Total distance for Day 1: 9 miles

Day 2: Hike Past Poplar River &
Scenic Overlooks

If you follow our itinerary, you’ll have about 6 miles to hike on your second day.

That is provided that you don’t get turned around at Glove Overlook like we did.

The trail leads out to a beautiful scenic overlook where we had lunch. Half our group continued on the correct path but the other half ventured back south down the SHT beuase the two pathways are side by side. Whoops!

When we eventually caught back up with our group and met others at the campsite, we learned that two other groups at camp made the EXACT same mistake at Glove Overlook. It added an extra two miles to our hike which made us feel nervous when we were running low on water. So the two lessons we learned were this:

1. Always have more water than you think you need

2. When straying off the trail for a scenic overlook, triple check that you’ve gotten back on the correct path and are still heading in the right direction. It sounds silly but it’s an easy mistake to make when hiking and chatting with others.

We were never “lost” so to speak because the trail only runs north and south. It simply added to our time when we didn’t realize we were backtracking. So consult your compass occasionally and if you follow this itinerary, make note of that sneaky Glove Overlook!

Hike alongside the Poplar River

Not far after Glove Overlook, you’ll hit the beautiful Poplar River. This is a great place to fill up on water. It’s a clear, running water source making it very ideal!

After that you’ll hike alongside the river for awhile and begin winding your way up.

Eventually you will come upon a spectacular view showcasing the Poplar River from above, showing just how far you’ve hiked! It’s a spectacular view.

From there, it’s not much further to camp.

Camp at Lake Agnes

There are actually two campsites here: east and west. We camped at Lake Agnes West which is up a long set up of stairs. It’s actually warmer in the fall because you’re away from the shore.

Lake Agnes East has beautiful lake views but you are right near the water which can be good and bad. You won’t have to walk far to purify your water source but the wind coming off the water can be chilly at night.

Both are great campsites though, the views are unreal! It will just depend where there is space to set up camp.

Important to note: Campers must make room at the campsites since there are no reservations and it would be unkind and unsafe to refuse to make room at camp and force others to continue to the next camp especially if it were getting dark.

You may be alone at a campsite but most likely there will be other people around.

We had 19 people at our Lake Agnes West campsite and we had a fantastic time swapping stories, getting to know one another and hanging out at the fire!

Total distance for Day 2: 6 miles

Day 3: White Sky Rock Spur Trail &
Shuttle Back to Oberg Mountain

Due to shuttle availability, we ended our last day around 1pm. Our third day was shortest with the least hiking but some of the best views!

We left camp around 9am and enjoyed time by the lake before continuing on. If you are planning to end at Caribou Trail CR 4, then you will come to a spot along Lake Agnes where you can continue along the SHT or turn upwards away from the lake towards a sign reading “Caribou Parking Lot .9 miles” -follow this sign!

You’ll go down some fun tree trunk staircases and big mossy rocks along the way to the White Sky Spur Trail.

Hike the White Sky Rock Spur Trail

This fairly strenuous but short spur trail packs MAJOR punch. It’s a mostly uphill .6 mile climb but the views at the top are spectacular. Especially in the fall! This little spur trail is a great place to hang out until the arrival of your shuttle.

After we enjoyed lunch from the top of the White Sky Rock, we began the descent down to the parking lot for the shuttle we had prescheduled.

We were picked up at Caribou Trail and brought back to Oberg Mountain where we left our cars.

*Our 3rd day was relatively short but you could continue on to Cascade River for pick up if you wanted another full day of hiking.

You can reserve a shuttle back to your car here.

If you use this shuttle service (there are a few options) just know reservations must be placed at least four days in advance.

If you are looking to celebrate after, I suggest going to ride the Lutsen Gondola (although it’s a little pricey!) and have lunch at the restaurant up on the peak. Don’t miss the viewing platform to the right when you step off the Gondola at the top. The colors here are always amazing.

Superior Hiking Trail Backpacking Checklist:
Everything You Need for 3 Days On The Trail

Whether you are new to thru-hiking or an experienced backpacker, you’ll want to consult a packing list as you prepare for your big adventure on the Superior Hiking Trail to make sure you have everything you need before heading out.

Below you’ll find my complete packing list for everything I brought on the Superior Hiking Trail for 3 days in the middle of September. I hope you find it helpful!

If it’s your first trip, don’t feel overwhelmed! Yes you’ll probably need to buy some new gear. And while purchasing quality gear is an investment, nothing needs to break the bank.

Companies like Enlightened Equipment make really high quality products that are warm, durable and lightweight. They aren’t cheap but if you’re going to invest in one quality item, I suggest it be a down sleeping bag. They fold up incredibly small and can fit in your backpack. Yet the down insulation is very warm. I went on my first trip with a $40 sleeping bag from Walmart and was cold at night. Not to mention my sleeping bag was too large to fit into my backpack. But our group leader had one of the quilts from Enlightened Equipment and showed me the product, so thanks for the recommendation Syndol! This will be a future purchase for my next backpacking trip.

Another great company is Hyke and Byke because they offer high quality equipment at a lower price point and it’s ethically sourced and 10% of profits go to charity!

To save money on the rest of your gear, you can get a good quality and very durable sleeping pad for only about $40. I recommend this one. And your tent doesn’t have to be expensive, I use this two person one and I love it.

Clothing

When it comes to clothing, it’s important to avoid cotton. It will hold moisture leaving you wet and cold. Even cotton socks will give you blisters because they don’t dry out.

So just don’t pack anything cotton. It might be tempting to pack your favorite cotton hoodie but they are bulky and won’t dry if it gets wet.

Stick to synthetic fabrics with quick dry technology and smartwool!

Your packing list may vary by season. In the height of summer, you may not need a winter hat. But Northern Minnesota is COLD.

Even in the fall, temperatures will dip to freezing at night. If you go in fall, you will want extra warm sleeping socks and mittens!

Superior Hiking Trail Backpacking Checklist

Hiking outfit (leggings/pants, sports bra, tank, hiking boots, long sleeve shirt for layering, hiking socks)

Camp shoes (lightweight sandals or slippers to wear around camp, trust me your feet will want a break from your hiking boots after a long day!!)

*Yes I slept and hiked in the same thing each day/night. You’ll want layers for warmth but skip any unnecessary clothing. For 3 days you can rewear all your stuff. The goal is a light pack!

As you backpack more, you will find what you like to have with you and what you don’t feel you need.

Some people at the campsite liked to have a deck of cards to play at night. Others brought vodka or wine to enjoy by the fire in the evenings. I liked having my journal or a book there but others may not want that extra weight.

And always make sure you have the 10 essentials with you on the trail. If you get lost for any reason or the weather changes, it’s necessary to be prepared.

If you’re looking for fun, interesting and unique camping sites- you’ve come to the right place. If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I have been camping and “glamping” around the world for the last two years in epic destinations like the Great Smoky Mountains, the countryside in Spain or at festivals across Europe.

Well I’m excited to share with you guys exactly how I find these epic camping sites!

Whether you’re camping to save money, glamping to connect with nature or simply looking for a trip more memorable than staying in another generic hotel, these apps, websites and companies will help you find the coolest accommodations outdoors and around the world.

Glamping in Tennessee

Hipcamp

By now, just about everyone everywhere knows about Airbnb. But have you heard of Hipcamp? It’s a resource similar to Airbnb that allows privately owned properties to be rented out to travelers.

This could mean anything from a basic camping spot in someone’s backyard to large privately owned glamping sites.

Just like with Airbnb, sometimes you’ll meet the owners and sometimes you won’t. It just depends on the site you book. There may be other campers around or you might have the property to yourself! Hipcamp is home to a wide range of properties- even cute cabins and lodges.

I have personally used Hipcamp a number of different times during my travels in my home state of Minnesota and while traveling the Great Smoky Mountains.

The first glamping site we found in Minnesota was exclusively featured on Hipcamp and was one of my favorite summer adventures this year! The property had multiple campsites surrounded by gorgeous trails. We stayed in the stunning safari tent. And for extra fun, try showering in the very cute and charming outdoors shower.

The second Minnesota glamping trip I went on was at the Dancing the Land farm also found on Hipcamp. This stay was an absolute 10/10 experience!

If you’ve fallen in love with the “glamping” (glamorous + camping) craze that has taken the travel industry by storm, you’re not alone! People who want to connect with nature but still have a few comforts (like a bed, ha!) are growing in number.

Under Canvas is a company that provides “glampsites” near beloved national parks.

We stayed at the stunning campsite near Great Smoky Mountains National Park and were thrilled with the property. However, this isn’t the most budget friendly campsite. Under Canvas is very trendy and will cost just as much as a hotel room. But it’s an awesome experience if you can swing it!

Of course you already know about Airbnb. But did you know you can filter searches by scrolling down and selecting “unique stays“? Everyday more camping and glamping options are being added to Airbnb so it’s worth checking in the unique stays sections while on the hunt for a great camping or glamping site.

One of my favorite unique Airbnb stays of all time was this gorgeous glamping yurt in Australia on Great Ocean Road. It perfectly faced the ocean for sunset and we had the entire beach to ourselves!

Harvest Host

If you have a camper van or RV, you can find free amazing campsites through this network of wineries, breweries, distilleries, farms and attractions that invite RVers to stay in any one of the 1274+ campsites.

There is a yearly membership of $79 but the campsites are FREE. It’s only applicable if you have an RV but it’s a cool way to campout somewhere unique!

Tents of any kind aren’t allowed and the van or RV must be fully self contained with a toilet, water tank and inside cooking facilities.

Interested in camping but feel intimidated or don’t own any gear?

Glamping is a great option for new campers because everything is provided for you. But if you don’t have any gear yet and are interested in camping, try an all-inclusive camping trip with a company like Bindlestiff Tours.

These small group trips are great because you don’t have to provide any of your own camping gear- just show up and the guide will have everything you need loaded in the trailer.

If you’ve never done it before, the thought of camping solo can seem really intimidating. You might have a lot of questions.

Where would you camp?

Would you feel safe?

What about falling asleep at night, won’t your mind start racing with every crack of a twig or rustle in the bush?

Is it safe for females?

I wondered all these same things but still I was drawn to spend time outdoors solo. And I’m so thankful I did.

Here’s everything you need to know to get started on your first solo camping trip!

Ease Your Way Into It

Start small. Try local camping with other people around before you jump into a big backcountry trip.

Pick somewhere close to home.

Minnesota is full of state parks. Most likely, there is a campsite nearby where you could give camping solo a try.

If you hate it, you could always pack up and come home.

Buuuuuut I doubt that will happen I wasn’t sure how I would like it but all it took was one trip to get me addicted to camping solo!

Start with a drive-in site.

Rather than a cart in site (which would mean you are carrying your gear from a parking spot down a trail to the campground) opt for a drive-in site for your first time!

If you’re feeling nervous at all, having your car right there will eliminate a lot of your fears. If anything went wrong, all you’d have to do is walk a few steps to your car and drive away.

Camp at campground with wifi if you’re scared about going solo.

If you want to ease yourself into camping solo, picking a campground that has wifi or at least cell service will put your mind at ease.

While I am all for disconnecting and putting away technology while camping, it’s nice to know when you’re starting out that if you had to get ahold of someone you could.

And if you have trouble sleeping at night in the quiet, you could turn on some music or watch a movie in your tent before bed to help ease the transition into sleeping alone outside!

Be prepared to calm your mind.

You might get nervous your first night if you hear a rustle in the woods. A passing-by squirrel or a rush of wind can seem off-putting to the overactive imagination. Be prepared to calm your mind with a little mantra or pep talk. If you need to, you can always play a little music to help you fall asleep.

Safety Tips

Although camping solo at a campsite with other campers is perfectly safe, here’s a few helpful things I’ve learned along the way.

Always let someone know where you are staying.

It only takes a moment to update someone on your travel plans and it’s always a smart move. Even switch on the “share location” option if you have an iPhone with someone to put your mind ease!

Don’t post your location in real time.

As someone who shares all their travels online, I have had to adjust and start posting about my trips after the fact. Announcing online that you are camping solo somewhere just isn’t safe. Share all your amazing photos once you’re back!

Make sure you have a portable charger to keep your phone charged.

Whenever you travel solo, it’s smart to have a backup charger because letting your phone go dead can not only be inconvenient, it could potentially be unsafe. The first two times I camped solo, my phone died before I laid down for bed. I would have been more at ease with a charged phone, knowing that if something went wrong I could call someone.

Yes there may be some campsites where you don’t have service but when you’re new to camping, it’s a good idea to have it charged in case. You’ll feel more at ease

Water Proof, Solar Powered Portable Charger

Have a light source.

Whether it’s a simple flashlight or a fan/light combo for your tent, just have something to illuminate your tent at night.

Things To Know

Firewood

Most state parks won’t let you gather firewood or bring your own, you’ll need to buy a bundle when you arrive. It’s usually $5 or $6 cash but it varies per park.

Bear safety

Seeing bears in Minnesota isn’t common but if you’re far north on the Gunflint Trail, it’s possible you will encounter bears. We saw a family of bears multiple times while staying at the Gunflint Lodge.

Keep in mind these safety tips from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:

Do not feed bears or allow bears access to any human-related food sources.
Do not bring food or other scented toiletries (including lip balm) into your tent or camper. Using these toiletries (e.g., strawberry scented soap) can also attract bears, so it’s best to leave these at home.
Keep a clean camp. Make sure food/trash (anything with an odor) is stored in bear-resistant canisters. Other storage options include:
- Trunk of car
- Food lockers (when available)
Clean your cooking area well.
Cook away from the tent and don’t sleep in clothes you wore while cooking.
Do not bury food scraps; pack them out with your trash in a bear-proof canister or airtight bag.
Remove all garbage and fish remains from camp every evening.

Wipe your shoes at the start of a trail to prevent the spread of invasive species.

At the start of many trails, you’ll see a small station to wipe your shoes clean of the potential invasive species you may be unknowingly carrying on your shoes. It only takes a moment to clean them off!

Have The Right Gear

I recommend still having a two-person tent. I’ve slept in single person tents and they are so small that sometimes I feel like I don’t have room to sit up or have my bag next to me etc.

And even if you are interested in camping solo, there may be times in the future you go with a partner.

This orange tent is the exact one from Amazon I bought and so far, I love it! It’s VERY easy to set up, the rain tarp is sturdy and the pockets inside are useful.

There are much more expensive tents out there but so far, I have found this to be an excellent option.

It’s also lightweight if you plan to go backpacking with it.

And if I’m being totally honest, orange *pops* really well in photos so the photographer/blogger in me was happy to find a great tent that would also photograph well in mostly lush, green landscapes!

My favorite piece of camping equipment is definitely my hammock!

Not a necessity but awfully nice to have as well You can carry it in your backpack on a hike and enjoy the views from the top!

How To Find Campsites

So now that you’ve made up your mind to try solo camping in Minnesota, how do you find a campsite? Check out these resources.

This is the official page for Minnesota State Parks and Trails. Here you can search campsites based on your travel dates, number of nights and rental type.

Hipcamp

This site is like Airbnb but for campsites. They are all privately owned and vary from a spot in someone’s backyard for a couple of dollars to full blown “glamping” resorts like this one we stayed at called P2 Rendezvous and Retreat.

RESERVING A CAMPSITE

If you reserve your campsite online the same day you plan to check in or upon your arrival there is no reservation fee.

I am often able to skip the fee by reserving mine the morning of my trip. However if there is a specific campsite you want or you’re going during a popular time/weekend, you will need to reserve ahead of time.

This will include a $7 non-refundable reservation fee. (Or $10 if you call to make the reservation!)

MINNESOTA STATE PARK PASS

In addition to the cost of your campsite, a Minnesota State Park Pass is required here.

You can purchase one when you arrive or ahead of time here.

It’s $7 for a day or $35 unlimited for the season for ALL Minnesota State Parks. If you plan to stay more than one day or visit any other parks in the following year, it’s worth purchasing the unlimited pass.

Just note: the pass is car specific. So if you have more than one vehicle, you won’t be able to switch the unlimited pass to another car later in the year, you’ll have to add a second vehicle.

How to Find Hiking Trails

Minnesota Park Finder

This official site will help you find whatever it is you’re looking for in Minnesota whether it’s long trails, winter trails, nature programs etc.

AllTrails

You can download the app or use their website to find trails nearby. Think of it as Tripadvisor but for hikes.

You have the option to search for hikes close to you, read reviews, see photos of the trails and get updates on closures etc.

It’s a really great resource for finding trails you’ve never heard of before!

This list includes some of the shortest hikes with the biggest payoffs! So even if you don’t consider yourself an avid hiker, it’s an easy introduction to hiking in the state of Minnesota. And these are some views you won’t want to miss!

The Joys Of Solo Camping

If you’ve ever traveled solo, then you understand the immense joy and freedom it can bring into your life. Solo camping gives me that same wonderful feeling of self care and relaxation.

You can wake up when you like, hike whatever trails you like and eat whatever you like on the trip. There is a much deeper connection with nature that happens when you’re by yourself.

I love camping with my friends and family but there is no denying travel in a group can be stressful at times. So I like to have a mix of both solo and group adventures in my life!

If you’re in the Minnesota area and looking for a great intro to solo camping, I highly recommend Blue Mounds State Park for your first place!

This campsite has great indoor bathrooms, easy drive in sites and wifi at the campground. If you’re scared to start solo camping, it’s a great introduction because having your car right there and a wifi connection if you needed something will erase a lot of your worries.

The second park I camped solo at was the beautiful Great River Bluffs State Park. There was no wifi but still great facilities and campsites that felt private but had other campers nearby!

Another Minnesota favorite is the stunning Split Rock Lighthouse campgrounds!

How to find friends who are interested in camping

I see people asking online how to find friends who are interested in doing outdoor or camping trips. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea! I hope this post gives you the confidence to try it solo because it’s incredibly rewarding.

Glamping in Minnesota: The perfect summer getaway!

Glamping in Minnesota

If you’re looking to take a trip this summer in Minnesota but are unsure where to go that will allow for social distancing, maybe it’s time you give glamorous camping (“glamping”) a try!

It allows for you to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of life at home and instead connect with nature while still enjoying some luxury comforts.

As an avid “glamper”, I was thrilled to discover the glampsite P2 Rendezvous and Retreat. This site is privately owned by a lovely couple, Pat and Pam who go above and beyond to ensure you have a great stay! You can book a luxury safari tent, a tipi or bring your own gear to one of the cart-in campsites.

Where is this glampsite located?

The P2 Rendezvous and Retreat is located in the Southeast corner of Minnesota near Cannon Falls or 30 minutes from Red Wing.

Our original plan for the trip was to find somewhere to stay near Red Wing to explore that beautiful river town. But when we discovered the glamping site, we wound up loving it so much, we spent way more time there than anticipated.

You can book this glampsite through Hipcamp.

Hipcamp is like Airbnb but with campsites. It costs nothing to make an account or look at the accommodation available and each campsite on Hipcamp is privately owned.

Properties on Hipcamp range from a scenic place to set up your own tent on someone’s yard for a few dollars to full blown- glamping resorts.

The P2 Rendezvous and Retreat was great because not only did you get your glamping tent but the property was set up for the perfect getaway! Walking trails, decks for sunset and a thoughtfully laid out property all added to the charm of this place.

1st Option: the Safari Tent

This place is heaven! I’ve never stayed in a glamping tent so beautifully decorated.

The inside was furnished with an entire African safari theme. The furniture was all clean, function and very trendy.

The P2 Rendezvous and Retreat glampsite is also home to two tipis.

The larger tipi is available to book in the wintertime when the safari tent is closed. Imagine snowshoeing around the trails then coming back to curl up in bed by the fireplace inside.

No pets and no kids allowed.

This is a place intended for adults to relax, connect with nature and escape the busyness of their lives at home.

So bring a bottle of wine (or several!) and make the getaway a romantic one! Snuggle up in a tipi with your partner, drink champagne at sunset or leisurely stroll the trails. It’s all incredibly romantic!

Or book a tent for a girls weekend like we did! Add shopping and wine tastings in Red Wing to your itinerary for the perfect girl’s trip.

It seriously is the ideal getaway. Just leave the kids and dogs at home!

Whether you want to curl up with a good book or just spend a weekend hanging out, the tents will leave you feeling like you’ve got *almost* all the comforts of a hotel.

It’s the perfect blend of nature, camping and luxury.

The night before it had rained something fierce. But we were warm and dry in our cozy bed!

There is something incredibly tranquil about falling asleep and waking up to the sounds of nature all around you.

Instead of the sounds of traffic or city life, you’ll wake up to the chirping birds!

2 Night Minimum Stay

When you go to book, it won’t let you reserve a tent for only one night. There is a two night minimum stay!

We were fortunate we stayed the extra night because we loved having a full weekend to explore the property and the nearby towns.

Outdoor shower

Before you panic about the lack of indoor shower, let me just say how much fun we had showering in nature!

The “shower shack” is super cute and private. Tucked back in the woods, you can go have a warm, solar powered shower from a big bag that hangs on a hook in the cute little “shack”.

You just fill up the bag prior to wanting a shower with the hose in the yard. Leave the bag sitting out in the sun and the solar bar on the back will heat the water. Then take it to the shower shack and hang it up! Viola!

Your accommodation comes with towels and the water was actually really warm.

Of course if you didn’t want to fuss with taking an outdoor shower, you can just pack some dry shampoo and shower right before and after your glamping trip. But honestly, we loved the experience and I highly recommend you go for it!

Overall, a worthwhile summer getaway!

Yes, the glamping site is a lot more money than regular camping but still WAY less than a bed and breakfast in Red Wing.

We found it to be an awesome mid-range accommodation option.

The safari tent currently costs $119 a night but if you split it between two people, it’s less than $60 a night!

For the level of comfort and attention to detail, we thought it was worth the price!
