If you’re planning your very first visit, here are my top, most unforgettable things you simply can’t miss.

Perched atop Castle Rock, this fortress dominates the city skyline and offers panoramic views of the city. Inside, you’ll find the Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, and centuries of royal Scottish history. It’s a must-see and a great starting point for understanding Edinburgh’s past.

2. Wander and Shop Along the Royal Mile

Stretching from the Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Royal Mile is a treasure trove of shops, street performers, whisky tastings, and tucked-away closes (narrow alleys).

Pop into local boutiques for tartans, kilts, and souvenirs with serious Scottish flair.

3. Join a Harry Potter Walking Tour

If you’re a Potterhead, Edinburgh is a pilgrimage site. Discover the real-life inspirations for Diagon Alley, visit the haunting Greyfriars Kirkyard (where a certain “Tom Riddle” lies), and stop by The Elephant House café—where J.K. Rowling famously penned the early chapters of Harry Potter. Make sure you pop in for a butter beer!

These British icons may be vanishing elsewhere, but in Edinburgh, they’re still standing proud. You’ll find a few scattered near the Castle and on the Royal Mile—perfect for that classic UK travel snap.

Located in Princes Street Gardens, the ornate Ross Fountain sits beautifully against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. It’s a dreamy spot to rest, take in the scenery, or enjoy a quiet picnic.

8. Admire the Scott Monument (Best from the Steps!)

This towering Gothic tribute to writer Sir Walter Scott is one of the tallest monuments to an author in the world. While you can climb it for a view, your best photo angle is from the nearby steps—your Instagram will thank you.

9. Tour the famous Greyfriars Kirkyard cemetary

Greyfriars Kirkyard is one of Edinburgh’s most famous and atmospheric graveyards, tucked just off the Royal Mile. Dating back to the 16th century, it’s known for its weathered tombstones, winding paths, and eerie mood.

The graveyard is often linked to Harry Potter, as J.K. Rowling spent time nearby and is said to have drawn inspiration from names found on the graves—most famously Tom Riddle and McGonagall—as well as the dark, magical feel that echoes parts of the wizarding world.

Greyfriars is also home to the story of Greyfriars Bobby, a small Skye Terrier who became a symbol of loyalty. Legend says Bobby spent 14 years guarding the grave of his owner, John Gray, in the 19th century. After Bobby’s death, he was buried near the kirkyard, and a statue was raised in his honour. Today, the combination of history, legend, and magical connections makes Greyfriars a must-see spot in Edinburgh.

10. Dive into the History of Kilts and Tartans

Step into the world of clan pride and fashion evolution by learning how kilts and tartans became iconic symbols of Scottish identity.

The Tartan Weaving Mill near the Castle offers an immersive experience, from loom to wardrobe.

Visit Frankenstein—a spooky bar housed in a church, paying homage to Mary Shelley (who lived in the city for a time).

Dirty Dick’s is another local favorite, full of character and classic Scottish charm.

And don’t miss the cozy pubs along the Royal Mile, often with live folk music spilling out the doors.

15. Visit Holyrood Palace

One of the most iconic things to do in Edinburgh, a visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse lets you step into Scotland’s royal history.

The dances are usually performed in sets or circles, making them highly inclusive—no prior experience is needed. A caller guides dancers through each step, ensuring everyone can join in, from beginners to seasoned dancers. Laughter, spinning, and fast-paced footwork are all part of the experience, often followed by cheerful applause and friendly conversation.

Ceilidhs are commonly held at weddings, festivals, school events, and community halls, where the atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and full of life. More than just a dance, a Scottish ceilidh is a celebration of togetherness, tradition, and joy, capturing the heart of Scotland’s cultural heritage.

20. Whiskey Tasting at The Scotch Whisky Experience

The Scotch Whisky Experience is a five-star visitor attraction and whisky education center located on Castlehill at the top of Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile.

Opened in 1988, it introduces visitors to Scotland’s national drink through immersive tours, tastings, and exhibitions. The venue has become one of Edinburgh’s premier cultural and tourism landmarks, adjacent to Edinburgh Castle.

21. Have dinner at the Witchery

The Witchery by the Castle is one of Edinburgh’s most iconic and atmospheric dining destinations — a fine-dining restaurant and luxury hotel steeped in history, drama, and old-world charm, tucked down a traditional close just off the Royal Mile, right beside the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle.

The Witchery occupies a sixteenth-century building in Boswell’s Court, originally constructed in 1595 for a merchant named Thomas Lowthian. Over the centuries the space has been a rectory and committee rooms for local clergy, and its weathered stone, carved oak panelling, and historic inscriptions remain part of the experience today.

The restaurant itself was founded in 1979 by James Thomson OBE when the Royal Mile was still in need of regeneration. From those early days with just a handful of staff, The Witchery has grown into one of Scotland’s most celebrated hospitality venues and played a significant role in breathing new life into Edinburgh’s Old Town.

The name “Witchery” echoes the darker chapters of Scottish history: in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Castlehill was one of the country’s most notorious sites for witch trials and burnings, with more accused witches put to death here during the reign of James VI than anywhere else in Scotland.

The Witchery’s ambience is legendary — candlelit, richly decorated, and theatrical. Its interiors feature oak-panelled walls, gilded ceilings, tapestries, and baroque décor that immediately transport you into another era.

Entirely lit by antique candlesticks, it sets a mood that’s at once romantic, old-fashioned, mysterious, and luxurious.

This place is on the pricier side, but it definitely makes for a memorable dinner in Edinburgh.

There’s a reason Bucharest was once called “Micul Paris” — the Little Paris of the East.
Between the grand 19th-century architecture, romantic balconies, and lively café culture, this city was once the glamorous heart of Eastern Europe. Walk its wide boulevards today and you’ll still catch glimpses of that golden age — but also traces of its darker, communist past and its thriving modern revival.

Bucharest is a city of contrasts: elegant yet gritty, nostalgic yet forward-looking, historical yet buzzing with nightlife. It’s one of those places that surprises you the more you explore.

I have fallen in love with not only Bucharest but Romania in general, and come back every Halloween for the party at “Dracula’s Castle” in Transylvania. And every trip to Romania starts and ends in Bucharest! So here are my top personal recommendations!

Why “Little Paris”?

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bucharest’s elite were enamored with French culture. French was the language of the upper class, architects trained in Paris designed much of the city, and Romanian society adopted French fashion, manners, and cuisine.
Strolling down Calea Victoriei, you’ll see neoclassical and Belle Époque façades, ornate balconies, and tree-lined streets reminiscent of Paris itself.

And yes, Bucharest even has its own Arc de Triumf, standing proudly in the northern part of the city — a symbol of Romania’s victories in World War I and a perfect nod to its Parisian inspiration.

It was this flair — the architecture, the café life, the cosmopolitan elegance — that earned Bucharest its nickname as Little Paris.

A City Shaped by Communism

But beneath the beauty lies a deeper layer of history. After World War II, Romania fell under communist rule, and Bucharest became the stage for one of Eastern Europe’s most authoritarian regimes.
The dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu demolished entire neighborhoods to build his dream of a “socialist capital.” The result? The Palace of the Parliament, one of the largest buildings in the world — monumental, extravagant, and controversial.

Today, you can take a Dark History and Communism Tour to uncover this period — from secret police operations to the 1989 revolution that finally brought the regime down. It’s haunting, eye-opening, and essential to truly understanding modern Bucharest.

Where to Stay: The Marmorosch Hotel

Checking into Hotel Marmorosch feels like stepping into Bucharest’s glamorous past — with a modern twist. Once a grand bank, this luxury hotel has preserved its Art Deco charm beautifully.
Don’t miss a drink at The Vault, the hotel’s elegant underground bar tucked inside the former bank vault — it’s as atmospheric as it sounds.

Book a balcony room for views over the old city, and take a moment to admire the stunning marble lobby — it’s one of the prettiest in town. Plus, the location couldn’t be better — you’re within walking distance of nearly everything worth seeing.

4. Lunch at Manuc’s Inn (Hanul lui Manuc) – A historic inn turned restaurant with delicious Romanian classics and charming courtyard vibes.

5. Carturești Carusel – The city’s iconic bookstore; it’s so beautiful it feels more like a cathedral of literature.

6. Tea at the Little Paris Museum – A charming, hidden gem that captures the spirit of old Bucharest perfectly.

7. Drink or Shisha in Macca Villacrosse Passage – A stunning covered arcade glowing with golden glass ceilings and lively cafés.

Skye is rugged, wild, and breathtaking—a little less modern, a little more magical. Be ready for unpredictable weather, winding roads, and unforgettable scenery.

I first visited with my sisters in May 2025. We got a rental car in Edinburgh and drove all around Scotland together. We completely fell in love with the raw, vastness of this remote island. It was honestly completely different than what I expected but I was pleasantly surprised.

Here are a few of our favorite stops and tips for planning your first trip!

The Isle of Skye, off the west coast of Scotland, is a place of jaw-dropping beauty, ancient legends, and dramatic landscapes. From the mysterious Fairy Pools to the charming town of Portree and the whimsical Fairy Glen, Skye is truly one of the most magical destinations in the UK.

But before you pack your bags, there are a few important things to know that will help you make the most of your adventure.

Here’s a list of practical tips and highlights for your visit to Skye:

1. Don’t Miss the Fairy Pools

Located near Glenbrittle, the Fairy Pools are a series of crystal-clear, cascading pools that look like something out of a fantasy novel. The walk to the pools is relatively easy (about 2.4 km return), though the terrain can get muddy—sturdy hiking shoes are a must. Go early in the morning or later in the day to avoid the crowds.

You can swim in the pools! We went late in the evening after the crowds had departed and it was lovely but the water was freezing.

When we first pulled up and paid parking, we were disappointed because it looked like there wasn’t much there to see. But after about 30-40 minutes of walking on the trail, we could see the ground opened up and there were countless beatuiful pools to admire or swim in. (But think of it more as an ice plunge!!)

2. Wander Through the Enchanted Fairy Glen

Near the village of Uig, the Fairy Glen is a lesser-known gem that looks like it came straight out of a storybook. Spiral earth formations, strange hills, and mossy green textures give this landscape a mythical quality.

There are no signs or official trails, so take your time exploring and tread carefully to preserve the natural beauty.

3. Hike to the Old Man of Storr

This iconic rock formation is one of Skye’s most photographed landmarks—and for good reason. The hike up is steep but rewarding, offering panoramic views over the Sound of Raasay and the surrounding hills.

It’s best tackled in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid tour bus crowds. Good footwear and a waterproof layer are essential, as the trail can be wet and exposed.

4. Stay in Portree—Skye’s Charming Hub

Portree is the main town on the island and makes a great base for exploring. It offers pastel-colored buildings, local seafood restaurants, and a small harbor with stunning views.

Keep in mind, accommodations here can book out far in advance, especially in summer.

5. Accommodation: Quaint, Pricey, and No Elevators

Here’s something visitors are often surprised by: accommodations on Skye are generally small, independent, and a bit more rustic than you might expect for the price. Even a 3-star hotel can cost several hundred pounds per night during peak season.

Most places have just a handful of rooms, and it’s not uncommon for buildings to lack modern conveniences—like elevators. Pack light if you’re staying on an upper floor!

6. Fuel Up—Gas Stations Are Few and Far Between

There are very few petrol stations on the Isle of Skye, and many close early. Make sure to fill up your tank before venturing too far, especially if you’re doing one of the longer drives across the island. It’s easy to underestimate how remote some areas can be.

7. Expect to Pay for Parking—Everywhere

Nearly every popular site on Skye now charges for parking, including the Fairy Pools, Fairy Glen, Old Man of Storr, and scenic viewpoints. Bring coins or a contactless card, as many areas use pay-and-display systems.

Some smaller lots fill up fast, so early arrival can save you the hassle of turning around.

8. Download the Experience Skye App

Before you hit the road, download the Experience Skye app. It’s a fantastic offline guide that includes GPS navigation, walking routes, local tips, and historical background on landmarks.

Signal can be spotty on the island, so having offline maps and info can be a game-changer.

9. Take Your Time—The Views Are Worth It

Driving around Skye is not just a way to get from point A to B—it’s part of the experience. The winding roads offer sweeping views of lochs, mountains, and sea cliffs.

Build in time for spontaneous photo stops and slow travel. You won’t regret it.

10. Weather Is Unpredictable—Dress in Layers

Skye is known for rapidly changing weather. You might get sunshine, rain, and wind all in the same hour. Bring a good waterproof jacket, sturdy shoes, and layers you can easily take on or off.

11. Respect the Landscape

The Isle of Skye has seen a huge rise in tourism in recent years, and the environment is delicate. Stick to marked paths, don’t stack rocks or disturb natural formations (especially in places like Fairy Glen), and leave no trace behind.

12. Download Google Maps Offline

Before you hit the road, be sure to download offline maps on Google Maps for the Isle of Skye in advance. Cell signal can be unreliable or completely unavailable in many areas, especially in the more remote parts of the island.

Having offline maps ensures you won’t get lost when you’re far from a signal or Wi-Fi.

13. Dunvegan Castle & Seal Boat Tour

Located on the west coast of Skye, Dunvegan Castle is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and a must-visit for history lovers. Explore the gardens, admire clan relics, and take in the dramatic lochside views.

While you’re there, hop on a seal boat tour from the castle’s private jetty—it’s a short, peaceful ride where you’re almost guaranteed to spot colonies of harbor seals basking on the rocks. And you’ll get stunning views of the castle from the water!

14. Book a Sheepdog Demonstration in Advance

For a true taste of rural Scottish life, don’t miss the chance to see a sheepdog demonstration. These working dogs are incredibly skilled, and watching them in action—herding sheep across open fields at the command of a whistle—is both impressive and heartwarming.

Demos are usually held on farms and must be booked in advance, as spots are limited and fill up quickly during peak season.

Bonus Stop: Eilean Donan Castle

On your way to the Isle of Skye, don’t miss Eilean Donan Castle—one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks. Set on a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet, it’s the perfect place to stretch your legs and snap a postcard-worthy photo. It’s just before the Skye Bridge, making it a natural scenic stop.

Yes, Skye is a little more expensive, a little less modern, and a bit harder to get around—but it’s absolutely worth it.

Belfast, Northern Ireland’s buzzing capital, is a city with soul. In just one day, you can dive deep into its rich history, soak up its creative spirit, and end the night sipping pints in atmospheric pubs that echo with music and stories.

Whether you’re here on a quick trip or squeezing in a day before heading along the Causeway Coast, this is your perfect 24-hour Belfast itinerary.

Before your trip to Belfast:

• Make sure you have the Northern Ireland visa
• Watch the movie Belfast to better understand “the troubles”
• Familiarize yourself with the song “Belle of Belfast City” by the Irish Rovers. You’ll hear it played live all over the city & you’ll want to be able to sing along during a late night pub session when the whole bar is singing in unision “She is handsome, she is pretty! She is the belle of Belfast city!”

9:00 AM – A Black Taxi Tour: Belfast’s History from the Backseat

Start your day by stepping into one of Belfast’s iconic black taxis for a political and cultural tour like no other. These local drivers are not just drivers—they’re storytellers, historians, and lifelong residents who give you a raw, emotional, and eye-opening account of The Troubles and Belfast’s journey since.

Wander past the grand Belfast City Hall, check out the quirky Cathedral Quarter, and pop into one of the independent cafés nearby for a caffeine boost—Established Coffee is a local favorite.

12:30 PM – Award-Winning Lunch at Sawers

By now, you’ll be ready for some serious local flavor, and there’s no better spot than Sawers Deli—a Belfast institution. Tucked away just off the main shopping district, this place is packed with character and cheese (seriously, it’s a cheese-lover’s paradise).

Grab one of their award-winning deli platters, seafood chowder, or gourmet sandwiches. Everything here is delicious, fresh, and bursting with Northern Irish charm.

I highly recommend the goat cheese sandwich, it’s phenomenal!

2:00 PM – Set Sail at Titanic Belfast

No trip to the city is complete without a visit to Titanic Belfast. This iconic, iceberg-shaped museum is built on the very site where the RMS Titanic was constructed. It’s more than just a museum—it’s an experience.

Walk through nine interactive galleries, feel the scale of the shipyards, ride through the building of the ship, and dive into the myths and memories surrounding the most famous ship ever built. Allocate at least 1.5 to 2 hours—it’s that good.

4:30 PM – Check into your hotel

If you’re staying the night in Belfast, I like to stay at Leonardo Hotel Belfast. It’s walking distance to everything except the Titanic. (But you can easily Uber over there or drive yourself if you have a car!) The breakfast is great and it’s right near the main square.

Pro-tip for this hotel: Half the hotel has been renovated with AC. When you book, you’ll need to request to be on the side of the hotel that has air conditioning if that’s important to you! (It’s very common for hotels in Ireland to not have any air conditioning. With Ireland’s cool temperatures, you don’t need it most of the year anyway.)

6pm Irish Pub Crawl: Raise a Glass in the Heart of Belfast

The best way to close out your Belfast adventure? A proper Irish pub crawl. The city’s pub scene is legendary—full of character, music, and some of the friendliest folks you’ll ever meet. Here’s your route:

First Stop: Kelly’s Cellars

One of Belfast’s oldest pubs, Kelly’s is full of old-world charm, low ceilings, and hearty craic. Live traditional music? Check. Guinness poured to perfection? Double check.

Enjoy the live music, explore the historic interior and have a pre-dinner Guinness.

Next Up: White’s Tavern

A short stroll away, this is another one of Belfast’s historic pubs. Think stone walls, glowing fires, and cozy vibes. Grab a pint of local craft beer or a whiskey, and settle in. This is a great place to have your dinner!

Then: The Thirsty Goat

A bit more modern, but full of life. Outdoor beer garden, upbeat crowd, and usually some live music. This is where you start to feel the weekend energy, even if it’s a Tuesday.

Finale: The Duke of York

Tucked down a cobbled alleyway lit by fairy lights and lined with murals, The Duke of York is a Belfast icon. Inside, it’s an eclectic mix of mirrors, memorabilia, and banter. Outside, it’s Instagram heaven. End your night here and soak it all in.
