• Celebrate during the main hours (usually morning to early afternoon)
• Start earlier & end earlier
• Avoid heavily intoxicated crowds later in the day
• Most shops, liquor stores & places will be closed on Holi

When the energy shifts, it’s okay to step away, shower off the colors, and enjoy a calm afternoon by the lake.

Tip #6: The Pre-Night Party Is Just As Fun!!

The night before Holi, parties broke out all over Udaipur. There were DJ’s, fireworks, bonfires, and crowds everywhere! The night before wound up being just as much fun (if not more!!) than the actual day of Holi.

Tip #7: Go with a group!

India can be intimidating to travel solo and Holi can be really, REALLY overwhelming. Especially for females travelers, I would look into going with a group!

1. Amer Fort: Go Early (But Skip the Elephant Rides!)

Amer Fort is hands-down one of Jaipur’s most iconic landmarks. But trust me—go early! Not only will you beat the heat, but you’ll also avoid the major crowds.

And please, skip the elephant rides!

Instead, take a jeep or walk up to the fort to experience its grandeur ethically. The architecture and views here are breathtaking.

2. Panna Meena Ka Kund: A Hidden Gem

If you’re taking a jeep up to Amer Fort, make a quick stop at Panna Meena Ka Kund, a historic stepwell where locals used to gather to collect water and socialize.

Its symmetrical staircases make for a fascinating photo op, and the history behind it is just as intriguing. 

3. Tattoo Cafe & Lounge: Sunset Magic

Looking for the perfect sunset spot? Head to Tattoo Cafe & Lounge, which offers unreal views of the Wind Palace (Hawa Mahal). Grab a drink, enjoy some delicious food, and if you’re feeling adventurous, get a tattoo as a unique souvenir!

*A note of warning: power outages are very common in India. It is possible that the power could cut while you are getting your tattoo and you may have to wait until it comes back on. While it isn’t super likely, it definitely is possible.

4. City Palace: Upgrade for the Royal Treatment

City Palace is another must-visit, but here’s a tip—splurge on the Royal Splendor Tour.

This upgrade gives you access to all the private rooms, lets you avoid the crowds, and allows you to fully soak in the opulence of Jaipur’s royal past.

5. Bar Palladio: A Dreamy Cocktail Spot

Bar Palladio is an absolute dream! With its blue-hued interiors, elegant decor, and amazing cocktails, it feels like stepping into a whimsical Italian-Indian fusion paradise. The food is delicious too—perfect for a relaxed evening.

6. Hotel Narain Niwas Palace: Stay in Luxury

I cannot recommend Hotel Narain Niwas Palace enough

! My photos don’t even do it justice. If you’re looking for a place to stay in Jaipur that blends history, charm, and luxury, this is the spot!

Want to see Jaipur in a whole new light? Take a sunset jeep tour! Watching the city light up as you get panoramic views from different vantage points is simply unforgettable.

This vibrant, colorful archway has taken social media by storm, and for good reason! Patrika Gate is truly a masterpiece, and it’s absolutely worth a stop for photos and to admire the intricate artwork.

9. See a Bollywood Movie at Raj Mandir Cinema

Watching a Bollywood film at Raj Mandir Cinema was one of my favorite experiences!

The locals get so into it—cheering, clapping, and whooping throughout the film. It’s an immersive cultural experience, and the theater itself is stunning. Plus, tickets are super affordable!

10. Learn the Ancient Art of Block Printing

Jaipur is famous for its block printing, a centuries-old textile art. Take a workshop to learn the craft firsthand—it’s fascinating and a great way to appreciate the artistry behind Jaipur’s beautiful fabrics.

11. Shopping & Haggling Fun

Jaipur is a shopping paradise! From jewelry and textiles to handicrafts and souvenirs, there’s so much to explore.

And don’t be afraid to haggle—it’s part of the experience and can be a lot of fun!

Ranthambore National Park

Tiger Safari in Ranthambore National Park, India

If a tiger safari isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be! Truthfully, I didn’t even realize there were national parks that offered tiger safaris until I started looking into visiting India.

But after a thrilling safari experience in South Africa at Gondwana Game Reserve, I was eager for my next safari experience.

So when I joined a group trip to India, I was overjoyed to see the tiger safari at Ranthambore National Park included on the itinerary.

Ranthambore National Park

This gem of northern India is known for its Bengal tigers because here, you can see these majestic animals in their natural habitat. Ranthambore National Park was once the famous hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur but is now considered a major tourist destination for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 and declared one of the Project Tiger reserves in 1973, Ranthambore became a national park in November, 1980.

Located in the Sawai Madhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan, a safari can easily be added to a trip around India’s famous Golden Triangle route, which connects the three majors points of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

How To Get To Ranthambore National Park

Fortunately, Ranthambore is well-connected with all major cities in India, which makes traveling here simple enough! The nearest airport is in the city Jaipur.

But from any major Indian city, you can take a train to Sawai Madhopur Railway Station.

If you have a guided tour booked through India, it may be possible to add a safari onto your trip.

Speak with your guide or tour company to find our more about extending your trip to include a visit to Ranthambore National Park.

Safari Details

Safaris: Typically, excursions happen daily at 6:30am and 2:30pm. Each safari lasts for about three hours.
(Although from April 1st to May 15th it will be 6:00am & 3:00 PM)

Safari Vehicle Options:
1. 20 seater open top for large groups

2. 6 seater open top jeep

Each ride costs around INR 900 – 1400 per person of Indian Nationality or INR 2000 – 2500 for foreigners. (That’s about $26-$32 USD per safari for foreigners in 2019.)

Safari Zones

The park is divided into zones and each safari car is assigned a certain zones. Some zones are known to have better visibility and more tigers. Request to safari in Zone 1 or 3 ahead of time. We saw zero tigers in the zone we kept getting scheduled for because we didn’t know to book a good zone ahead of time. Tiger sightings can still be rare so plan to go on multiple safaris. Most people choose to go on at least 4 safaris.

Zones 1-6 are considered premium.

Pro tip: Request to safari in Zone 1 or 3 right when you book!

Zone 8 is the zone with the LEAST tiger sightings so avoid this zone entirely if possible.

When to visit?

The best times for tiger sightings at Ranthambhore National Park are between November and May.

How Many Tigers Are At the Park?

More than 60 wild tigers call Ranthambore Tiger Reserve home. But keep your eyes peeled for other animals as well. Plenty of wild and unique animals openly roam about the park.

• Striped Hyenas
• Sambar deer, Chital
• Nilgai
• Macaques
• Jackals
• Jungle cats
• Caracals
• Sloth bears
• Black bucks
• Indian Wild Boar
• Chinkara

A five star luxury resort might normally be out of your budget but in Ranthambore luxury comes at an affordable price! Most of these luxury, 5 star hotels (which even include your meals!) are under $100 a night.

Your safari is booked and your accommodation is set. Now you’re just wondering what to pack… It depends what month you are visiting because weather in northern India varies wildly from scorching hot in the summer to freezing cold in the winter months.

April, May & June: These months are extremely hot. Plan for nonstop, blistering heat. Pack light-weight, breathable clothing and plenty of sunscreen. Even a t-shirt will feel hot under the blazing sun. You’ll definitely want a hat and dark sunglasses for protection as well.

It helps to have a string on your sun hat so it doesn’t fly off when your safari jeep speeds after a tiger!

November, December, January & February: While India is hot in the summer months, norther India is exactly the opposite! Morning drives are freezing cold. You will want layers upon layers. During the afternoon, a light jacket or sweatshirt may be enough. But in the evenings, it will get COLD. A jacket, warm socks and proper shoes will be a must!

Especially if you plan to be taking photos in the early morning, you’ll want a pair of gloves that provide enough warmth but still allow you to operate your camera.

If I could recommend one thing to pack for your safari, I’d say to bring a scarf! The roads get dusty, particularly as you drive from the resorts through town to the park entrance. If you don’t want to be swallowing dust for the whole drive, do yourself a favor and have a scarf handy!

Ladies, you might want to pack a sports bra.

You will be jostled all around the hills of Ranthambore as you pursue tigers. Cruising over rocks, splashing through shallow water and speeding around the forest will have you bouncing every which way. You’ll be more comfortable if you wear a supportive, comfortable bra.

I recommend this one because it’s suited for high impact, has no wire for added comfort and is breathable with the mesh back!

For India in general, be sure to always travel with Imodium and Pepto Bismol to avoid “Delhi Belly” or traveler’s diarrhea. Even though the resorts near the park have an excellent standard of food, suddenly switching to a diet of all Indian cuisine can be tough on even the strongest of stomachs.

When you arrive at the gates of the park, there will sometimes be locals selling safari hats or tiger scarfs for about $5. We were happy to support the locals and bought both hats and scarves! The hats had the park’s logo and served as a great souvenir but also kept the sun out of our eyes. The scarves were extremely useful when it came to keeping the dust out of our nose and mouths.

If you’re lucky enough to have good tiger sightings, you’ll want to be ready with the right gear! I recommend having a DSLR camera and a zoom lens. With all the jostling in the jeep and dust flying up in the air, it will be difficult to be switching your lenses back and forth.

Important to Note!

We loved our stay at The Tigress & Ranthambore National Park is certainly enchanting. Our group felt frustrated when we were repeatedly scheduled to safari zones where tigers sighting were known to be minimal or nearly nonexistent.

So make sure you do yourself a favor and book the premium zones ahead of time. Clarify which zones you have been assigned with your travel agent, hotel staff or through the reservation process itself. This was our main regret!

It was frustrating to repeatedly safari in the same poor zone. Other guests we met at the park got very close to a tiger who lazily laid down next to their jeep for a long time. We weren’t so lucky.

Keep in mind: it’s possible your safari in Ranthambore National Park will result in no tiger sightings! So manage your expectations accordingly. We loved the experience regardless and I certainly plan to do more tiger safaris in the future. But don’t go thinking you’ll see dozens of tigers around every turn.

Where else can you go on a tiger safari in India?

1. Jim Corbett National Park: great for spotting tigers and elephants
2. Hemis National Park: home to snow leopards and white tigers
3. Bandhavgarh National Park: 50 tigers living here alongside lions, white tigers, deer and in some parts of the park even elephants
4. Nagarhole National Park: over 250 tigers living here alongside waterfalls, beautiful rivers and great hikes
5. Kaziranga National Park: plenty of tigers as well as rhino and elephants
6. Kanha National Park: Approximately 125 tigers roam this lush, beautiful landscape
7. Bandipur National Park: an old hunting ground for Indian royals now this is a popular place for tourists to safari
8. Anamalai Tiger Reserve: famous for its bengal tigers, Indian elephants and Indian leopards
9. Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: one of the oldest tiger reserves but smaller in size
10. Sariska Tiger Reserve: a smaller but ideally located reserve- its near Delhi, Jaipur and Agra so it’s very accessible to tourists traveling the Golden Triangle
11. Pench Tiger Reserve: while this reserve is smaller, it is the inspiration for the Jungle Book

Nearby Ranthambore National Park, there is a craft shop of talented seamstresses and artisans. These local women hand-make beautiful sarees, tapestries, dresses, house decor and more! And when you buy these stunning textiles from the source, you pay pennies on the dollar while supporting these women and their local communities.

Throughout India, haggling is common practice but the prices here were so ridiculously low, we happily paid the (very meager) asking price to help support the women. We did more shopping here than anywhere in all of India!

Whether they realize it or not, most tourists visiting India for the first time follow the famous “Golden Triangle” route which connects the three majors points of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

When traced on a map, the route forms a triangular shape- dotted with many famous sites.

After traveling this well-loved traveler’s route with a group of ladies in October, these were just a few of the unforgettable highlights.

Delhi

Delhi is truly a spectacle and the first point of the “triangle”. This sprawling city has a whopping population of 19 million and is not be missed on a first trip to India. It is unlike any other place in the world and truly justifies the country’s slogan “Incredible India.”

Totally unique to itself, Delhi will overwhelm you with a shock of colors, smells, foods, crowds, history and beautiful architecture.

Rickshaw Ride

You can’t come to India and NOT ride in a rickshaw- it’s a rite of passage! But beware of the Delhi traffic. You’re likely to get stuck behind thousands of other carts, rickshaws and yes, even the occasional cow. These skilled and agile drivers will dart and weave you through the most absurd winding streets and jam-packed alleys. Hang on for the ride!

Khari Baoli- Old Spice Market

The spice market in Old Dehli is a must-see!

Did you know it’s four centuries old?! FOUR!

Some shops even have their original names and are run by the 9th or 10th generation of spice sellers in the family.

Cramped and winding alleyways tout massive bags of wholesale spices. The scent is overwhelming to say the least!

Looking to buy some of these spices and bring them home? I highly recommend Mehar Chand & Sons!

Here you can buy the wholesale spices sold in the market but in smaller, prepackaged amounts. It makes for an excellent gift to bring back home!

Raj Ghat- Gandi’s Memorial

This garden and black marble platform house the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi.

The adored and infamous peace leader who won Indian independence from Britain through non-violence was assassinated on January 30th, 1948 and cremated at Raj Ghat the following day. An eternal flame still burns next to the memorial.

Red Fort

Constructed in 1639, this historic fort was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

As one of the largest monuments, it’s one of Delhi’s greatest tourist attractions.

Inside you’ll find stunning gardens, market shops, beautiful architecture and plenty of monkeys!

The Jama Masjid of Delhi

This mosque is not only one of the largest in Delhi but in all of India. Built at a cost of one million rupees by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 and 1656- this stunning mosque is sure to take your breath away. History, beauty and stunning architecture all rolled into one.

When you visit, you will be provided with a robe for modesty. Women must be fully covered. And like all mosques, you will be expected to take your shoes off out front.

Humayun’s Tomb

This breathtaking site is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun. Located in Dehli, it was commissioned by Humayun’s first wife and chief consort, Empress Bega Begum, in 1569.

It’s a lovely place to watch the sunset after a day of sight-seeing!

Agra

Famed as “the City of Love”, Agra is home to not only the Taj Mahal but a number of beautiful forts, mosques, shops and mausoleums. This city sits on the banks of the Yamuna river in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. 

Agra Fort

This massive historical fort was the main residence of the emperors of the Mugha Dynasty. They lived and ruled in Agra until 1638 when the capital moved to Dehli.

Today you can roam the royal courtyards where the elephants once paraded, see where the thousands of concubines lived and stand right where Emperor Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his brother.

After he built the Taj Mahal for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan spent his remaining years mourning her death, imprisoned in Agra Fort, with a perfect view of the Taj Mahal from his bedroom.

Taj Mahal

Considered the most beautiful building in the world and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal is an icon.

Although you’ve probably seen countless photos of this majestic mausoleum, nothing compares to seeing it in person.

Commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal; it also houses the tomb of the emperor himself.

Jaipur

Known as “the pink city”, Jaipur is the capital of India’s Rajasthan state. And why is the entire city pink you may be wondering?!

Because in 1876, the Princes of Wales and Queen Victoria paid a visit to the city. Since pink is the color of hospitality in India, Maharaja Ram Singh painted all of Jaipur pink.

What a way to welcome the guests!

Amer Fort

The main tourist attraction in Jaipur does not disappoint! This massive fort is seated high on a hill. And many tourists will opt to ride a jeep to the top rather than walk in the heat. T

You might see the fort called Amer Fort or Amber Fort but it’s all one in the same!

Warning: sales hassling will be more intense here.

There are many vendors who will not take no for answer easily. From the moment you arrive, you will be followed by merchants trying to push their souvenirs on you. I found Amer Fort to be the only place we went with too intense of sales hassling.

Panna Meena ka Kund– Ancient Step Well Near Amer Fort

This incredibly well preserved site features ancient steps leading down to a well. These steps wells (or “baori”) were a popular form of water storage in ancient India in which people could filter and gather rain water.

The water was then accessed by climbing down the stairs encompassing the well. There are a number of preserved step wells throughout the country but the one near Amer Fort is remarkably intact and easy to access.

And since it was once a step well for the wealthy and elite citizens of Amer, it is particularly beautiful!

If you chose to ride a jeep on your way up to Amer Fort, just request to make a stop here first. It’s right on the way!

The City Palace

Although the entire city of Jaipur is painted pink, the City Palace is an absolute explosions of pink! Walls, ceilings, floors- everything pink.

The palace and the grounds are open to visitors but still home to the royal family since 1727 AD.

There is an additional charge to enter the palace itself and see the private rooms including the famous blue room! (Nearly $50 USD)

However the general public area provides plenty of incredible places to explore, photograph and marvel over!

Hawa Mahal “The Palace of Winds“

With 953 windows, Hawa Mahal is easily the world’s prettiest and most extravagant screen porch!

Constructed in 1799 for Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh as part of the women’s section of the enormous City Palace, it is only one room deep in some areas.

This splendid site is located right in downtown Jaipur. And in the evenings, it’s beautifully lit!

Best Lunch Spot with a view: The Tattoo Cafe & Lounge

Patrika’s Gate

Made famous by Instagram, this gate is a popular spot to take photos! It’s a public archway, free to enter and a busy hang out spot for locals.

What To Wear In India

If you’re heading to India soon, women are often left wondering what to wear. Well, if I had to pick 3 words to describe your ideal wardrobe in India, it would be lightweight, modest and COLORFUL! India is all about the vibrant colors. The markets are full of the deepest reds, brightest blues and most shocking pinks! The locals truly hit every color of the rainbow with their saree selection- not a one of them dull!

And it will be HOT. Most likely, VERY hot. So while you will want dresses and scarves- make sure they are lightweight, allowing you to stay cool. And finally, to be respectful of the culture, you will want to dress more modestly than you do at home. This is not a country for short shorts and low cut tops. You can still look fashionable and trendy without feeling out of place (or disrespectful!) in India.

Maxi Dresses

Ahhh your best friend and saving grace for comfortability, modesty and fashion. So simple to toss on a maxi dress and go.

Flowy Skirts

You’ll want comfortable, non-restrictive skirts for when you are inevitably climbing into rickshaws, hiking up the steep hills to Amber Fort or wandering through the crowded markets. Fuller, lightweight skirts won’t trap the heat and added bonus, they photograph really well!

Scarves

I always stress the benefit of traveling with scarves in conservative countries. If you start to feel you are gathering some unwanted attention, you can always pull a scarf out of your bag to cover your shoulders, chest or hair. Plus in India, you have the added bonus of using your scarf to block out the dust while riding in rickshaws. And in the spice markets, the smell is so overwhelming, you’ll want to a scarf to help block out the smell. I was coughing and my eyes were watering until I pulled out my scarf!

Lightweight Tops

For tops, you ideally want something that covers your shoulders but also breathes.

Lightweight Pants

There’s no such thing as “too colorful” in India! Have fun shopping with bright colors so long as it’s lightweight! These were my go-to pants for long drive days!

Saree

If you’re going to wear a saree in India, I recommend buying one locally! But it doesn’t hurt to come prepared. They are stunning aren’t they? I thought I would feel self-conscious wearing one when I did- but local women were thrilled to see us wearing them. Ladies would come up and compliment them, thank us for wearing the traditional clothing and frequently helped us re-wrap them. Because in case you didn’t realize, sarees are pretty challenging to wrap well if you’ve never done it before!

Comfortable Shoes

You will do a lot of walking in India, it’s a unavoidable. With crowded markets and huge forts to explore, you’ll definitely wrack up some steps! The streets are (very) dirty so plan on having your shoes take a hit. This is definitely not the place to break in your brand new white sneakers. Keep in mind cows, pigs and stray dogs roam the streets so you might be dodging the occasional mess from them.

A Fan

I listed a fan on my Complete Packing Guide for India because when we had them, we genuinely used them a lot. I’ve said it a hundred times but India is HOT. Anything that helps to keep you cool is definitely your friend.

Accessories: Headdress & Chains

You can find a lot of unique, amazing accessories for sale in the market places. But I came to India with a few of my favorite head pieces. I always love how they make an outfit pop and even the local Indian women were asking me where I got them!

Day Bag with Zipper

Let me be clear: there is no shortage of cute bags for sale in India! If you want to buy something local, colorful and perhaps more vibrant than you would normally carry at home- there will be plenty of options! However if you want to arrive with a day bag ready to go, there are plenty of great options online that don’t break the bank.

Set your alarm before 5am.

Because you will need to get there EARLY. The gates open at sunrise but you’ll need to have your tickets and be in line before that. You’ll need to be towards the front of the line or you won’t stand much of a chance.

Don’t pack a bag so you can cut the security line.

Bag checks at the Taj Mahal are intense. They won’t let you bring in food, pens, markers, eye liner, drones, tripods…. the list goes on! With so many banned items, the bag check takes awhile. You don’t want to be stuck in the bag check as the sun comes up and the crowds pour in. If you don’t have a bag, you can just breeze right through the metal detectors and be on your way!

Hustle inside.

You’ve sped through security since you didn’t pack a bag (yay!) and now you’ll have to dodge a few sellers/local photographers who will want to sell their services or goods. But if you want to see the Taj Mahal empty, not just for the photos but for the sheer granduere of witnessing it completely EMPTY (It was so beautiful, I literally cried!) then come back to any sellers/photographers later.

Be photo ready when you arrive.

Some girls in our group packed sarees to wear upon arrival but didn’t wrap them until we arrived. Show up exactly how you want to look in the picture. Have your camera charged and know who is taking your picture. You won’t have time to fuss over things once you enter the space.

Pass the first photo point where everyone stops.

There is a breathtaking view when you first round the corner and see the Taj Mahal for the first time. It. Is. Stunning. But don’t get trapped here! Everyone stops here and grabs photos right away. Come back to this spot later!!

Hustle down to the midway point (between pools of water!)

Anddddd now you are seeing the Taj Mahal free of people. In all it’s splendid glory and sparkling in the morning sun. It truly is magical. Have whoever is taking your picture go up on the top middle platform- you can’t miss it! Then center yourself down below between the pools. Smile for the camera of course, but also turn around for a moment and gaze up at the Taj Mahal. It will feel like you’re the only one there. Pure magic.

Be generous and don’t hog the spot.

Being a kind traveler means not destroying the chance for others to get a photo there as well. We snapped two quick pictures of me and I hopped out to let someone else stand in the glorious, empty spot.

I love the travel community it provides but I hate when I visit a popular landmark and I see people selfishly posing over and over again in front of the same spot and preventing other people from enjoying the space Just be kind and share the space with others! Using your body to strategically block people on the path behind you in another great way to get lovely, clear travel shots at the Taj Mahal! You can’t see the family coming down the path because my torso and head were blocking them perfectly.

India: Your Complete Packing Guide

Heading to India soon? You’re in for the trip of a lifetime. One of my favorite countries in the world, India is sure to astound and inspire you around every corner. But the weather, travel requirements, modest clothing, “delhi belly” and the occasional lack of access to Western style toilets can catch first time travelers by surprise.

So I’ve compiled a list of the essentials into one easy to use packing guide for India. Make sure you have the following items in your suitcase before you take off.

Printed off copy of your entry visa

When checking into your flight, the airport will ask to see your approved tourist visa. Have it printed out to show them. And you’ll need to show it again when you go through immigration at the airport in India.

Passport

As always, make sure your passport doesn’t expire within 6 months of you traveling to India. Otherwise you will be turned away at the airport!

Imodium

Dehli belly is real thing that happens to a lot of people! I was fortunate enough to avoid it but don’t drink the water and don’t be caught without Imodium. If you think you’ve gotten sick, you’ll want to take a pill immediately so your travel plans aren’t interrupted!

Pepto Bismol

Queasy stomach after all that spicy Indian curry and paneer masala? Better have some Pepto Bismal in your day bag ready to go!

Toilet Paper

This depends where exactly in India you travel but many bathrooms do not provide toilet paper. Westerners may find it to be a little shocking when they walk in a bathroom stall and there is just a hole in the ground. Not all of India has toilets like this but you will definitely encounter some. It’s best to have a small roll in your day bag or carry some wipes with you. We only needed our backup stash a couple times but when we did, we were happy we had it!

Hand Sanitizer

To help avoid getting sick while you travel, always have a little hand sanitizer. Delhi is wonderful but very dusty! Your clothes might need an extra wash after your trip and your hands will definitely benefit from some hand sanitizer on the go!

Light weight scarves

Ladies, don’t leave home without a light weight scarf! It will be hot in India. You’ll want to be covered but cool. They photograph well and can easily be tossed on when you are needing more modesty!

Maxi dresses

Comfortable, lightweight maxi dresses will have you feeling appropriately modest yet looking great! If you plan to visit mosques and temples, you’ll need to have your legs covered. Pair with different scarves to give your look variety!

Comfortable walking shoes

With all the traffic (especially in Dehli!) there are times where walking is faster than driving. We hopped out of rickshaws and Ubers to just get ahead of traffic that had come to a complete and total standstill.

Day bag

A comfortable, lightweight day bag will keep your hands free and let you carry around your sunscreen, water bottle etc. Purses are available everywhere in the market place so you might want to purchase one when you arrive. But it’s best to have a bag with a zipper!

Makeup Setting Spray

If you plan on wearing make up in India, you might want to pack a setting spray. It is HOT. And you will get sweaty. Maybe bring waterproof/sweat resistant makeup as well.

Dry Shampoo

Again, the weather is hot. And you might be dressing with more coverage than you’re used to so plan on being sweaty during the day. Some places will be hot and crowded- it’s an unavoidable part of traveling in India. A major game changer for your hair: pack a travel size dry shampoo and bring it with you! If your hair starts getting greasy during the day, just give it a spritz to freshen up again.

Sunscreen

I managed to use very little sunscreen while in India because I typically was very covered. But if you burn easy, be sure to pack some because you’ll be likely to spend a lot of time outside!

Portable Charger

You realize you suddenly don’t recognize where you are and your phone in on 2%. Familiar with this scenario? Letting your phone die while traveling is not only inconvenient, it can be unsafe. Keep a portable charger with you so don’t find yourself lost without data- unable to to call an Uber or map your way back.

Universal Adapter

Depending where you are from, you will most likely need an adapter or India. I recommend getting one block adapter for many different countries.

A Fan To Keep You Cool

It might sound silly but we bought fans in Delhi and used them constantly. Every time we were waiting in line in the hot sun, we were digging in our bags to pull our fans out!

Indian Currency

We had a surprisingly difficult time finding any working ATM’s for the duration of the trip. We were frequently running out of cash and it was very inconvenient. Some places take card but not all. And we encountered more “out of order” ATM’s in Dehli than I would have thought possible. Either arrive with money converted or just exchange some at the airport right when you arrive. It’s much simpler to be prepared from day one than to try and hunt down a working ATM.

Camera & Lens Pen

India is a beautiful explosion of colors and unlike anywhere else in the world. If you want to get serious about photography, you might want to invest in a high quality camera to capture your trip. I shoot with a Canon 80D. But even more importantly- you’ll want the Lens Pen to remove the soot, sand, dust and dirt that will cover you camera lens when shooting in a dusty and occasionally dirty location like India.

Is it safe? Specifically for women?

Yes, as safe as any big city. But of course, always be a smart traveler no matter what country you’re in.

But unlike Egypt, I didn’t feel harassed by men. Unfortunately, there are a lot of negative stereotypes that exist about Indian men.

So I arrived with my walls up. I was prepared to be catcalled and harassed. But that simply was not the case. I was pleasantly surprised and relieved! The only time I felt I drew extra attention was when I was dressed up and taking photos in a crowded spot downtown. Then people, men included, would openly watch/stare. But this seemed to be more due to the fact that there weren’t many other Westerners around rather than because I was a woman.

And yes, some people might stare and ask for photos with you. But it was families, kids, elderly women… everyone! Not just men. Male tourists will also be asked for photos. Just be prepared, if you say yes to one person asking for a photo, a line may quickly form behind them with everyone wanting your photo!

Get ready to feel like a celebrity. It’s a bizarre experience!

Can you drink the water?

No the water is not safe to drink. And sadly this often results in using a lot of bottled water. As a believer in sustainable travel, I struggled with this.

It is hot in India- you need to drink A LOT to stay hydrated. Which unfortunately, results in a lot of plastic waste.

*If other travelers have recommendations for reducing plastic usage in countries where the tap water isn’t safe to drink, please leave a comment and let me know your tips! I’m always looking for ways to reduce my plastic usage abroad.

Did you get sick?

I personally did not. But a sudden switch to nothing but spicy Indian food can leave even the strongest stomach feeling a bit queasy after awhile. Other people on my group trip did get an upset stomach or diarrhea. It’s best to travel with Imodium and Pepto Bismal.

Keep it with you in your day bag. The moment you think you might have gotten sick, take an Imodium to curb it quickly.

What should I wear as a female?

Dress conservatively to both respect the culture and to avoid unwanted stares. Don’t worry about packing too much ahead of time, India is full of markets selling beautiful clothing for incredibly cheap prices. My advice: arrive with a half empty suitcase and do some shopping on your first day! You will find the most stunning shoes, dresses, skirts or sarees to wear during your trip.

Definitely plan to pack or buy lightweight clothing to stay cool on hot days! Scarves are a life-saver for modesty, a pop of color in pictures, and wiping the sticky sweat off your face which unavoidably collects in the hot sun.

When is the best time to go to India?

Traveling in off-season is always your best bet! I went in October when it wasn’t quite so hot but monsoon season had ended so it was dry.

Ultimately anytime between October & March is your best time to visit!

Do you need a visa for India?

Yes you need a visa. You can apply for the year long tourist visa or the 30 day one.

Only apply from this website: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html

Other places will try to charge you an added fee for applying for the visa through their third party website.

How do I find a good tour group to go with?

Will I have Wifi or do I need a SIM card?

This depends on where you stay. Most hotels will provide high speed internet but if you’re not part of a tour group, you will most likely want data so you can use Google Maps and call Ubers to get around.

India is one of the cheapest countries in the world to get cell data. So if you will be venturing off on your own without a guide, definitely get a SIM card at the airport when you land!

Do people speak English in India?

Yes and no. If you stay at nicer hotels, most people will speak English. And a lot of signs will be printed in English. But many locals will not speak any English.

There are 22 official languages in India (not to mention countless others!) so it’s challenging from one region to the next.

Usually I am able to learn a few phrases and use them throughout the country but with so many languages, I struggled to communicate properly. Often I just greeted locals with a smile and “namaste.”

How do I avoid getting ripped off?

Bargaining is part of the culture in India. Prepare to pay half of the asking price. And in tourist areas- even as much as a quarter. Start by saying “it’s not my first time in India” then low ball the price. Be prepared to walk away. The vendor will usually chase after you offering a lower price!

Use Uber instead of taxis or airport shuttles. Since the price is fixed, the driver can’t over charge you for being a tourist. You can take a 30 minute Uber ride in India for only $2.
