If you’re visiting in the fall, don’t miss the seasonal display at the Kennebunkport Inn. They have one of the most photographed fall backdrops in town, bursting with pumpkins, mums, and coastal autumn charm.

 Pro Tip: Need a pit stop? You’ll find free public restrooms conveniently located behind Alisson’s Restaurant in the parking lot out back.

Grab Coffee at Dock Square Coffee House

After some window shopping, grab your morning caffeine at Dock Square Coffee House, one of the most beloved cafés in town. Locals and visitors alike rave about their espresso drinks and homemade pastries.

Order a latte or cold brew and a blueberry muffin (because Maine = blueberries) and enjoy your coffee while people-watching in Dock Square. They also have a pumpkin coffee cake that is incredible!

Take a Picture at South Congregational Church UCC

Just a short walk away, the South Congregational Church UCC stands tall and bright white against the sky — the perfect “Classic Maine” photo stop.

Its timeless New England architecture is a must-see, especially in the morning light or fall colors.

Photo Tip: Walk around to the back of the church for a quieter and equally picturesque angle.

Sample Local Flavors at Maine-ly Drizzle

Next, stop into Maine-ly Drizzle, a charming specialty shop offering samples of locally made olive oils, balsamic vinegars, and honey.

It’s a great spot to grab a souvenir from Kennebunkport — something edible and uniquely Maine. My favorites? The lavender raw honey and wild blueberry balsamic — sweet, floral, and perfect drizzled over cheese or toast.

Find the Best Harbor Views

Want one of the best hidden photo spots in Kennebunkport? Walk between Seas the Day and Junebug Beach House to find a small deck overlooking the harbor. From here, you’ll see the iconic stilted buildings reflected in the water — a postcard-perfect scene.

Continue your stroll past the Boathouse Restaurant, and cross the bridge back into Dock Square.

Don’t forget to stop for a selfie with the “Welcome to Kennebunkport” sign — a rite of passage for every visitor!

Summer Highlight: Have a Drink on the Spirit of Massachusetts

If you’re visiting in the summer, don’t miss a drink aboard the Spirit of Massachusetts — a historic schooner docked right in town that’s been transformed into a floating bar and restaurant.

It’s one of the most unique things to do in Kennebunkport, with unbeatable harbor views and a breezy nautical vibe. Just note that it’s seasonal and operates with limited hours, so check the schedule before you go.

Shop Around Dock Square

Spend a little more time exploring Dock Square’s shops before lunch. You’ll find cozy boutiques, galleries, and even a local bookstore with an entire section dedicated to books set in Maine — a perfect souvenir for book lovers.

Lunch at The Clam Shack or Federal Jack’s

By now, you’ve probably worked up an appetite — and in Kennebunkport, that means lobster time!

• The Clam Shack: Famous for its award-winning lobster rolls — buttery, fresh, and served steps from the bridge.
• Federal Jack’s: Offers great waterfront views and local craft beer from Shipyard Brewing Company.

Both are excellent choices, depending on whether you’re in the mood for a casual takeout vibe or a relaxed sit-down meal.

Check In: The Inn at English Meadows

After lunch, check into your home base for the night. I love The Inn at English Meadows, a modern, charming bed and breakfast within walking distance of Dock Square.

The rooms are cozy and bright, breakfast is delicious, and there’s a firepit out back perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

There are plenty of other great inns in town, but this one checks all the boxes for comfort, style, and location.

Afternoon: E-Bike Adventure with Coastal Maine Hike & Bike

Ready to explore beyond downtown? Head to Coastal Maine Hike and Bike for an e-bike tour or self-guided ride.

If you’re going solo, follow this scenic, easy loop through Kennebunkport’s most iconic sights:

• St. Anne’s Church
• Walker’s Point (the famous Bush family compound)
• Wildwood Baptist Church
• Goat Island Lighthouse

End your route at Nunan’s Lobster Hut — a Kennebunkport institution and the perfect dinner stop.

For dinner, dig into fresh lobster at Nunan’s Lobster Hut — a true Maine classic. It’s cash only, no reservations, and opens at 5pm, so plan ahead.

Order a steamed lobster, side of corn, and finish with their homemade blueberry pie. To drink, try a blueberry-lemonade cocktail — it’s light, refreshing, and very Maine.

After dinner, it’s just a 10–15 minute e-bike ride back to town.

The interior is beautiful, but if the weather is nice, the top deck has a great view overlooking the cute & tiny Kennebunkport.

Cozy Evening at The Inn at English Meadows

Back at The Inn at English Meadows, settle in by the outdoor firepit and soak up the peaceful Maine evening. It’s the perfect way to end your day — cozy, quiet, and full of that classic Kennebunkport charm.

Bonus: Add a Stop in Ogunquit

If you’ve got extra time, take a quick 30-minute drive south to Ogunquit and walk the Marginal Way, a scenic 1.5-mile paved coastal trail with stunning ocean views.

End at Perkins Cove, a postcard-worthy harbor filled with shops, seafood spots, and the iconic Perkins Cove Drawbridge.

(Pro tip: Park at Obed’s Parking Lot to start the walk!)

If your Alaskan cruise with Royal Caribbean makes a stop in Haines, you’re in for a treat.

This charming town has a rugged, small-town Alaskan feel with some of the most scenic landscapes you’ll find along the Inside Passage. Having been to Haines more than once on an Alaskan cruise, I’ve now perfected how to spend a day here without a ship excursion!

If you only have one day in port, here’s how I’d recommend making the most of it.

Morning Adventure: E-Bike to the Chilkoot River & Lake

While traditional bikes are available, I highly recommend renting an e-bike. They’re a little pricier, but completely worth it. The terrain around Haines is relatively flat, and the e-bike makes the ride smooth and effortless, letting you focus on soaking in the scenery rather than worrying about the workout.

From downtown Haines, it’s about a 50-minute ride to the Chilkoot River, and the journey is half the fun. You’ll pass the picturesque “Welcome to Haines” sign—a perfect photo opportunity before continuing your ride.

Once you arrive at the river, head toward the Chilkoot River Fish Weir (just plug it into Google Maps).

This is one of the prime spots to see wild bears fishing for salmon, especially during the late summer runs.

The key here is patience—sometimes the bears are active right away, other times you may need to wait.

Bring your camera and enjoy the anticipation in this stunning natural setting.

Continue biking along the river until you reach the Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site. The sweeping views of the turquoise water surrounded by dramatic mountains make the extra ride completely worth it.

If you still have energy, bike back toward town and stop at the Battery Point Trailhead. This is an easy, well-marked hike that winds through lush forest before opening up to a beautiful beach. It’s the perfect way to stretch your legs and cap off your outdoor adventure.

Afternoon in Town: Food, Drinks & Local Charm

After your hike, head back into town to refuel at Rusty Compass Coffeehouse, where you can grab a great cup of coffee and a delicious sandwich. Once you’re recharged, take some time to wander through the cute local shops—it’s a great way to pick up a unique souvenir.

When you’re ready for something different, you have options:

• Try a local craft beer at Haines Brewing Company, Inc.
• Or go for a mead tasting at Three Northmen Tasting Room in a Viking-inspired bar with a lively, atmospheric vibe. Mead isn’t something you’ll find everywhere, and it’s a fun way to sample a truly local flavor.

If time allows, stop by the Haines Sheldon Museum ($10 entry) for a quick dive into local history and culture.

Before heading back to your ship, make one last stop at the local distillery: Port Chilkoot Distillery, conveniently located near the port. Whether you sip a cocktail on the spot or grab a small Alaska-themed bottle to take home, it’s the perfect final toast to your day in Haines.

Just before boarding, don’t miss a photo op at the Haines sign and the scenic boardwalk by the ship.

And once you’re back onboard, stay out on the top deck for sail away—the views of the little town and the surrounding mountains are absolutely breathtaking.

Tips for Visiting Haines on Your Own

• You don’t need to book a ship excursion for this itinerary—it’s easy and fun to explore independently.
• If e-bikes aren’t your thing, you can rent a car from Avis in town for around $220/day, giving you full flexibility.
• Bring a good camera and binoculars for bear spotting along the Chilkoot River.

Salem, Massachusetts – 15 Tips For Visiting in October

October is a magical time to visit Salem, Massachusetts, especially for those intrigued by its rich dark history and Halloween spirit.

It’s been on my USA bucket list for ages. All the way back since reading the Crucible in English class in the 10th grade and watching Hocus Pocus annually during Halloween in the 90’s.

As the undisputed Halloween destination, Salem gets over 1.2 million visitors during October. Needless to say, this quaint town can get very, very crowded especially on the weekends in October.

So, I’ve compiled a list of my top tips for visiting during this busy time. You can watch a recap of the tips below!

To make the most of your trip, here’s a guide to exploring Salem’s best attractions and hidden gems.

1. Start Your Journey on Essex Street

Kick off your adventure on Essex Street, the main hub of activity in Salem. This vibrant thoroughfare is lined with shops, cafes, and historical sites. It’s the perfect starting point to get a feel for the town and plan your day.

These are the busiest shops as well, they tend to have a long line out the door later in the day! So you may want to hit up some of the shops here first.

It’s also where you’ll find the famous Bewitched statue!

2. Avoid the Weekend Crowds

To truly enjoy Salem in October, try visiting during the weekdays. The town’s small size can feel even smaller when a million visitors converge on weekends.

A Tuesday or Wednesday visit allows for a more relaxed experience, with manageable lines even at popular spots.

The first time I went to Salem, we went on a Tuesday in mid-October and it was perfect!!

That being said, some museums and attractions aren’t open on Tuesday so give yourself multiple days or plan accordingly. Also if you plan to attend a specific event or party, chances are it will be on the weekend.

3. Download the Salem App

Before you head out, download the Salem App. This essential tool provides up-to-date information on public bathrooms, road closures, parking options, and event schedules. It’s a lifesaver for navigating the bustling streets!

4. Get Tickets In Advance

For popular sites like the House of the Seven Gables, it’s wise to purchase your tickets in advance. This historic mansion, famous for its connection to Nathaniel Hawthorne, offers a glimpse into the 17th-century life and the town’s storied past.

Certain activities like haunted houses or some walking tours you can book on the spot in person!

5. Take public transit or have a parking plan

Parking in Salem can be challenging, especially in October. If at all possible, take public transit.

The train from Boston is a convenient and great option.

If you drive, aim to arrive early for $5/$6 city parking. (Yes there is really affordable all-day parking but it will fill up very fast.)

If you have the Destination Salem app, you’ll be able to get real-life updates on parking including which ramps still have spots etc.

Here is the type of updates you can expect from the app regarding parking.

6. Visit the Witch House

One of Salem’s most significant historical sites is the Witch House, the only structure remaining with direct ties to the 1692 witch trials.

This eerie yet fascinating building offers insights into the trials and the town’s history, making it a must-see.

Once home to Judge Jonathan Corwin, one of the judges who presided over the trials, this eerie, darkly shingled house offers a glimpse into 17th-century life. Visitors can explore its period furnishings, learn about the trials’ grim history, and soak in the atmosphere of one of America’s most haunted towns. It’s a perfect stop for anyone exploring Salem’s storied past!

7. Get Witch Museum Tickets At Midnight

If you’d like to visit the Witch Museum, be sure to secure your tickets as they go on sale at midnight for the following day during October.

The museum offers engaging exhibits that delve into the infamous trials and their impact on Salem.

While we were standing in line to enter with our tickets, we saw so many people walk up and try to buy same-day tickets not realizing they go on sale at midnight.

We set an alarm and bought them right at midnight to make sure we’d get tickets. Even 15 minutes after midnight, we saw a lot of the tickets were gone.

8. Hocus Pocus Filming Locations

For film buffs, Salem is a treasure trove of Hocus Pocus filming locations. Many of these sites are free and open to the public, allowing you to walk in the footsteps of your favorite characters.

Old Town Hall (32 Derby Square) – The location of the Halloween party scene where the Sanderson sisters sing “I Put a Spell on You.

“Ropes Mansion (318 Essex Street) – Used as Allison’s house in the film.

Pioneer Village (310 West Avenue) – The opening scene set in the 1600s was filmed here.

Salem Common – Several scenes, including when the kids walk through town, were filmed here.

Phillips Elementary School (86 Essex Street) – The exterior of the school where Max and the gang trap the Sanderson sisters.

9. Evening Walking Tours

Don’t miss out on a night walking tour. These guided experiences highlight Salem’s spooky history and eerie legends, offering just the right length for an unforgettable evening.

This is the tour I did and loved. The tour varies wildly depending on who your guide is but we had Bobby and he was FANTASTIC!

10. Trolley Tours

For a quick overview of Salem, consider a trolley tour. These hour-long rides provide a fun way to see the town and learn about its history. Tickets are available for purchase on-site.

The Salem Trolley Tour is a popular way to explore the historic and haunted sites of Salem, Massachusetts. The narrated, hour-long tour takes you through the city’s landmarks, including sites from the Salem Witch Trials, 17th-century architecture, and notable movie locations like those from Hocus Pocus. It’s both informative and fun, providing insight into Salem’s rich history and spooky past.

How to Get Tickets: Tickets are only available in person day of. Go to the ticket seller outside the Visitors Center: 2 New Liberty Street, Salem. 

11. Historic Charter Street Cemetery

If you’re a history enthusiast, be sure to reserve a spot at the historic Charter Street Cemetery. This cemetery is the final resting place for many prominent figures from Salem’s past and offers a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere.

It’s free but requires a reservation during October.

12. Witch Memorial

The Salem Witch Trials Memorial, built in 1992, honors the 20 innocent people who were executed during the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Located next to the Old Burying Point Cemetery, the memorial features 20 stone benches inscribed with the names of the victims and the method of their execution. It was constructed to serve as a somber reminder of the dangers of hysteria and injustice.

How to Visit: The memorial is free to visit and open to the public year-round. It’s located at 24 Liberty Street, within walking distance of many other historic sites in Salem.

13. Follow the Painted Yellow Line Through Town

As you explore, you’ll be able to easily spot a painted yellow line that runs through town. This painted path will guide you to key attractions around town. It’s an easy way to navigate while soaking in the historic charm.

It’s a self-guided route that takes you past some of Salem’s most iconic historic sites. Simply follow the bright yellow line painted on the sidewalks to explore must-see landmarks, including sites from the Salem Witch Trials, historic homes, and notable museums.

No tickets are needed, just follow the line and enjoy the journey through Salem’s past!

14. Where to Stay: Hotel Salem or the Hawthorne Hotel

For accommodations, consider Hotel Salem, located right on Essex Street with a fantastic rooftop bar.

Alternatively, the Hawthorne Hotel offers a historic stay in a prime location, perfect for immersing yourself in Salem’s ambiance.

Both of these hotels offer really great accommodation in a perfect location right on Essex Street. You couldn’t ask for a better location for your trip!

15. Be Prepared for Lines & Crowds

Even during weekdays, expect some lines, particularly at souvenir shops and popular attractions. However, with a little patience, you’ll find the wait is manageable and well worth it.

Salem in October is a unique blend of history, mystery, and festive spirit. By planning ahead and embracing the town’s rich narrative, you’ll create unforgettable memories in this enchanting destination. Happy haunting!

Backpack the Superior Hiking Trail

Backpack the Superior Hiking Trail with Wanderlust Group Trips:
September 2023

After 3 previous years of incredible backpacking trips along the Superior Hiking trail, I was excited to do this trip for the 4th time!

With such beautiful fall colors, I just never get sick of this route.

For the first year ever, no one on the trip was from Minnesota. So it was a blast having so many travelers come to my gorgeous home state for the first time.

Minnesota doesn’t receive a lot of tourism from other states and countries but I was so excited to show this hidden gem off to all the out-of-state visitors!

Day 1

We kicked off the trip with a carpool from Minneapolis, stopping in Duluth to have a delicious lunch at Hungry Hippie Tacos. A favorite of mine along on the North Shore!

As we continued to drive north to Lutsen, we spotted gorgeous views of Lake Superior and various lighthouses along the way.

Before arriving at our hotel, we stopped at the stunning Palisade Head. You’d swear it overlooked an ocean not a lake!

That evening, we checked into the lovely Mountain Inn. The staff here are so friendly and they have a gorgeous outdoor area with a grill, fire pit, picnic tables and hammocks.

I made burgers and veggie burgers on the grill for everyone as we said our introductions and got to know one another.

After dinner, it was time for s’mores around the campfire!

We went over the info for the day to come and I went room to room to make sure everyone’s packs were sorted and a manageable weight.

Day 2

Around 9:00 am we left the hotel and departed for the trailhead. It was time to begin our trek!

First, we hiked the stunning Oberg Loop trail. This 2.6 mile spur trail is a popular day hike because it gives unparalleled views of the fall colors.

We stopped a lot in the first section of the hike to take photos of the beautiful fall colors and while everyone was still looking fresh, ha!

After the beautiful Oberg Loop, we continued north towards Mystery Mountain campsite where we would be setting up camp.

We stopped for lunch at a cute little bridge running over a stream.

There the ladies filtered water through their filtration devices to refill their water bottles and camelbacks.

After lunch, there is a challenging uphill section that the ladies absolutely crushed!

Despite a long first day of hiking, we made it to camp well before dark to set up our tents and start a fire.

Due to a bit of rain, the wood at camp was wet and difficult to start a fire. The ladies were very clever and used hand sanitizer on a tampon to get the fire going! We all had a good laugh and got a roaring fire started in no time.

That evening, we hung out at camp and cooked dinner.

I showed the ladies how to hang a bear hang to keep food safe from critters and potentially larger animals. The first campsite is more difficult to find a good branch so there was a lot of giggling and laughter as we attempted to toss the rope with all the bags over tree branches.

After several failed attempts, we finally got all the food hung safely!

Day 3

The next day, we made breakfast at camp and enjoyed the sun before the rain set to come later that day.

We made coffee and hot coco, fetched our bear hangs and packed up.

As we were leaving camp, it began to rain so we had a good laugh about how silly the ponchos look when over the enormous backpacks.

As we hiked, we passed along the Poplar River for some truly spectacular views!

Despite some rainy conditions, it was still such a fun day with a great group of women!

Day 4

We woke in the morning to dry conditions, yay!

The rain had stopped and we were able to enjoy a lovely leisurely morning together at camp.

We hung out, cooked breakfast and made coffee slowly as we packed up and got ready for the final day of hiking.

The last day of the itinerary is super short and scenic.

We passed gorgeous fall colors, the stunning Lake Agnes, a beautiful beaver dam and so many lovely overlooks.

We ended our hike with the White Sky Rock spur trail which is always a favorite of mine!

It’s a short, easy spur trail that packs a PUNCH!

Great views and a rewarding pay off for a short, final uphill climb.

We hung out at the viewpoint for awhile taking pictures and soaking in the final views of our hike.

Shortly after, the local celebrity and quirky, loveable shuttle driver, Harriet, picked us up to take us back to the hotel in Lutsen.

We all rode the Lutsen Gondola to the overlook peak (and despite some more rain!) had a very fun, celebratory farewell lunch.

We then said our goodbyes and made our way back to Minneapolis.

Group Trip Highlights 2022

After hosting an incredible group trip along the Superior Hiking Trail in 2021, I was so thrilled to be back with another group of amazing hikers for 2022.

We had a fantastic crew of 10 people plus myself, some from the area & some from out of state. And together, we spent 4 days and 3 nights in beautiful northern Minnesota.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR 3 DAYS ON THE TRAIL

Day 1: Arrive in Lutsen

On the first day of the trip, we all made our way up to Lutsen! I had a full car of ladies as we roadtripped along the beautiful North Shore. We stopped for delicious fry bread tacos & jalapeno cheese curds at Hungry Hippie Tacos in Duluth (which I highly recommend!) before checking in at the Mountain Inn.

That night, we had our welcome dinner, got to know one another & went over all the backpacking information for the days to come.

In the evening, we had a campfire and the hotel prepared for us adorable s’mores kits!

We went to bed early to get ready for our big hike!

Day 2: Oberg Mountain to Mystery Mountain Camp

The next day we set off for the Oberg Mountain trailhead at 8:45 am so we could be hiking by 9am! Originally, the fall color finder said we were going to have 0% fall colors due to the unseasonably warm couple of weeks we had been having. But the moment we hit the trail, we saw that wasn’t true.

The Oberg Mountain Loop was colorful as always! We were all so excited to catch our first peep at the stunning fall colors. We took extra photos during this section because everything was just perfect from the weather to the lighting to the views.

After we hiked this scenic spur trail, we continued on to the official Superior Hiking Trail.

Along the way, we filtered or treated stream water for drinking, had lunch along the trail after a lengthy uphill section and took plenty of photos of the fall foliage.

In the past I’ve made it to camp around 4:30pm but we were cruising and made it to Mystery Mountain campsite just a little after 3pm. Once at camp, we changed into our pajamas and camp shoes for the night. It was a blast hanging out and cooking dinner. Once we were done eating, we went to do our bear hangs. I showed the group how to use some rocks in a sock with a rope and a waterproof bag to keep their food safe from any wandering bears or critters.

We knew rain was in the forecast around 7pm so we all got set up and ready to be in our tents before the rain hit.

Holly and I were all cozy playing Wheel of Fortune while we listened to the rain fall on our tent. It was a really nice night at camp.

Day 3: Mystery Mountain to Lake Agnes

The next morning, we waited for the rain to stop and fortunately at 9am, it did. Despite the weather saying it would rain all day..we got very lucky!

So we had breakfast at the campsite before heading out on the trail. The stretch from Mystery Mountain to Lakes Agnes is absolutely beautiful.

Although it was muddy, our spirits weren’t damped and the rain almost entirely held off.

The group was so positive and fun to be with, I felt so fortunate to be hiking with such an awesome group of people.

Highlights of the day included hiking alongside the Poplar River, lunch at Glove Overlook and winding views of the river from above.

After a winding uphill section, we were rewarded with this beautiful view overlooking the foliage. Although the mist was dense, it added to the ethereal feeling in the woods.

Late that afternoon, we arrived at Lake Agnes. We laughed that it was the “Ritz Carlton” of campsites because of the “fancy” latrine (fancy by backcountry standards that is!!) and the recently installed metal bear hang device. This contraption made it a lot easier to do our bear hangs at the end of the night. The rain continued to hold off and the group built a blazing fire.

That night we stayed up around the campfire swapping scary stories, talking about ghosts and deciding on trail names for one another. I went to bed blissfully exhausted from a long day of hiking and good company.

Day 4: Lake Agnes to Caribou Trail

On our final day, Abbie & I went down to see the sunrise over Lake Agnes. And although it was too overcast for much of a sunrise, the lake was beautiful in the early morning light.

We got cozy in our tents again as it rained from about 7am-9am. But suddenly the blue skies appeared and the rain halted completely. From there on out, we had beautiful weather while we hiked.

This day was our shortest length of hiking. But the trail is a lot of fun. It started alongside the lovely Lake Agnes which was peppered with spectacular fall colors.

From there, we crossed over mossy log stairs, huge rocky sections of trail and we ended with the stunning White Sky Rock spur trail. Not to mention, we saw countless funky

mushrooms along the way.

We hung out at the White Sky Rock view point and had a small snack lunch before catching our shuttle back to Oberg Mountain.

Our shuttle driver Harriet is something of a Superior Hiking Trail legend! She’s spunky and fiesty and makes the brief shuttle back super memorable. So we just had to grab a photo with her once we got back to the Oberg parking lot.

Some of our group had to hit the road so we said some goodbyes while the rest of us went to ride the Lutsen gondola up to have lunch at the spectacular Mystery Mountain overlook.

We toasted a beer to an amazing weekend and had some food before hitting the road. I can’t thank everyone on this trip enough for making it such a special weekend.

Key West: 12 Tips For Your First Visit

Located four hours from Miami by car, Key West is the southernmost place in the continental USA. This tropical island feels less like Florida and more like a Caribbean island to me.

Home to beautiful white sand beaches, delicious seafood, great bars, wild roosters and plenty of sunshine!

If you’re looking for a good tropical vacation without leaving the USA, Key West might be just right for you.

1. Not A Budget Destination

Key West is tropical paradise, a super fun place to visit but not a budget destination, especially during peak season.

Be prepared for hotel rooms to cost several hundred dollars a night.

Book things in advance and try to travel in the shoulder season.

2. Drive the Overseas Highway If You Have Time

The Overseas Highway is a 113 miles of roadway built over the water connecting each of the islands. Allowing you to roadtrip from Miami to the southernmost key, Key West!

The full drive will take about 4 hours excluding stops.

There is also an airport in Key West you can fly into directly. If you plan to drive, I suggest going for more than one night or it is a lot of time spent in the car. By the time we stopped for lunch, gas and a few sights along the way, it took a lot more than 4 hours to actually arrive in Key West.

3. Feed The Tarpons At Robbie’s

As you drive down, stop at Robbie’s marina where you can feed the tarpons off the dock or rent kayaks etc.

They also have a restaurant and souvenir shops.

4. Cruisin’ Tikis

When you arrive, Cruisin’ Tikis is a super fun way to see Key West.

Bring your own drinks and snacks.

They provide a driver, ice, a cooler, cups and a sound system you can hook up to.

Sunset is a great time to go. Or if you go during the day, you can wear your suit and do swim stops!

5. Key West Is Home To Many Wild Roosters

Wild roosters freely roam the island and make a racket at sunrise!! You might be woken up by these Key West natives.

But they are a beloved part of the island and you’ll find them on t-shirts, magnets and everything in between!

6. Sunrise at Ponce De Leon Fishing Pier

Don’t miss sunrise at Ponce De Leon Fishing Pier in Duval Street Pocket Park! It’s absolutely stunning. And it’s a great time to watch the birds swooping for fish or other marine life surfacing.

There is a little coffee shop right by the pier as well.

And for sunset, head to Mallory Square. It’s a lively boardwalk along the water where people gather each night to watch sunset. There are street artists, performers, musicians and food stands in the square

7. Stand At The Southernmost Point Of The Continental USA

The Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S.A. is a historic landmark and popular photo op!

Yes, it’s a cheesy tourist stop but there are some interesting signs around the landmark detailing the history of Key West.

8. Duval Street

Stay near Duval Street to be in walking distance to most everything! This is the busy, main street lined with restaurants and bars.

If you’re wanting to party, you’ll have no trouble finding a spot here. It’s the best area for nightlife and bar hopping.

If you want a quiet, relaxing vacation then avoid this area at night, especially during spring break season.

9. The Angelina Guest House

Accommodation in Florida Keys is expensive but The Angelina Guest House is a really great option for something less expensive. And the heated pool is amazing! It’s like a giant hot tub tucked in a garden of palm trees.

Since we were visiting in January, the ocean was still a bit cold to swim in. But a highlight of our trip was having nightly and morning swims in this great pool!

The rooms are super basic. But the location and the pool made this a worthwhile stay for us.

10. Smathers Beach

Smathers Beach is a beautiful (free!) public beach with swimming, restrooms and water sport rentals. Umbrellas and chairs will cost you $50 though so pack a towel yourself.

11. Margaritaville Beach House

If you’re looking for a great food spot/bar by Smathers Beach, check out Tin Cup Chalice in Margaritaville Beach House.

It’s the closest place to Smathers Beach for alcohol and food. Plus you don’t have to be a guest to use the amenities.

The pool is open and FREE to anyone, no day pass required!

12. 90 Miles From Cuba

Just 90 miles from Cuba, this island is home to amazing Cuban cuisine & culture. Enjoy!

New Orleans Tips For Your First Visit

Hands down, New Orleans is my favorite city in the USA. The jazz music, the cuisine, the culture… there is nowhere else like it!

I’ve traveled to New Orleans a number of times over the years and have compiled my top tips!

1. Maison Bourbon for amazing, free live jazz

The first three tips on this list are all incredible places where you can watch jazz music around the city for FREE.

Start off at the iconic Maison Bourbon. If you can, see the Leroy Marshall Band .

2. Mahogany Jazz Hall

Continuing with free jazz halls, be sure to check out the Mahogany! It is also home to unique absinthe drinks and burlesque. The intimate setting and plush vintage curtain really feels like you’ve stepped back in time.

3. Fritzel’s European Jazz Pub

Live jazz every day since 1969! This place is legendary. They often have live jazz during the day as well. And again, there is no cover charge. Just be sure to tip the musicians!

4. To get on a Bourbon Street balcony and throw beads, check out Boot Scootin Rodeo.

It’s the bar with the mechanical bull, yeehaw! It’s a super fun country bar with a balcony perfectly overlooking the main drag. So be ready to throw some beads to the crowds below!

This is a great place to take pictures overlooking Bourbon Street.

5. Daily jazz brunch at The Court of Two Sisters

This place is also a fun dinner spot, both the beautiful patio & the gorgeous interior. For brunch, make reservations in advance.

6. Check the city calendar of events before your trip- there are a ton of festivals in the city!

It isn’t only Mardi Gras that draws the crowds. There are countless big events, parades and festivals going on in the city throughout the year.

Check the schedule here. That way you’ll know of any events you may want to attend (like the parades!) and can book accommodation far enough in advance.

7. Book a tour to visit the famous St. Louis Cemetery #1

This legendary graveyard is definitely worth the visit but can’t be visited without a guide. So schedule in advance and prepare to marvel at the spooky above-ground graves.

8. Take the dark green St. Charles streetcar to the Garden District to view the historic homes.

It is the oldest continuously operating streetcar line in the world!

9. Hotel recommendation in French Quarter: Holiday Inn French Quarter-Chateau Lemoyne

This hotel has a great prices, a beautiful pool in the courtyard and is a few blocks off Bourbon Street so you can easily walk to most things.

I also recommend checking out AC Hotel on Bourbon Street. Both of these hotels are within walking distance to most of the key sights.

10. Hand Grenades are a popular drink from Tropical Isle on Bourbon Street- be careful, they’re strong!

In New Orleans, it is legal to walk outside while holding an open container of alcohol.

This is why drinkers on Bourbon Street can bar hop while carrying a plastic cup of their favorite beverage, stopping at takeout windows for refills. And you’ll see people walking around with these bright green Hand Grenade drinks everywhere!

The recipe is kept secret but they are stronger than they look… I’ve heard that they might be made with 151 rum…

11. Streetcars fare is $1.25 and must be paid with exact change when you board.

Don’t miss riding the historic streetcars in New Orleans! Just be prepared with the right fare.

12. Favorite lunch spot: Napolean House for inexpensive meal in a circa 1915 house

Napoleon House is the perfect lunch spot. It has both indoor dining and lovely back patio. The building is an old house from around 1915 and the menu is very affordable. It’s a great place to sample all the NOLA classics like gumbo.

13. Try all the NOLA cuisine, like Crawfish Etouffee, Po’boys, Gumbo and beignets!

The unique and delicious cuisine really sets New Orleans apart from other cities. I highly encourage you to seek out these dishes and give them a try.

New Orleans foods to try:

• gumbo
• po-boys
• jambalaya
• red beans and rice
• étouffée
• muffulettas
• oysters
• turtle soup
• beignets
• chicory coffee
• bananas foster
• pralines
• king cakes

14. Eat beignets at Cafe Beignet & listen to jazz. They have live bands daily! Usually starting at 11am.

15. To get your fortune told go to Bottom of The Cup Tea Room or visitor the tellers in Jackson square

16. Brunch or dinner on Steamboat NATCHEZ for authentic Mississippi River cruise

While the food itself is pretty average, the experience is quite fun! They have a live jazz band onboard and it provides lovely views of New Orleans from the water.

17. To see alligators in the bayou, check out Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour.

This tour is a great way to see alligators in their natural habitat and learn about the beautiful bayou.

They also offer round trip transportation from Bourbon Street if you’re in New Orleans without a car.
