1. Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji)

This Zen Buddhist temple is a dazzling architectural masterpiece covered in gold leaf.

Surrounded by beautiful gardens and reflective ponds, Kinkaku-ji provides a serene atmosphere for visitors to appreciate its stunning beauty and historical significance.

2. Arashiyama Monkey Park

Nestled in the scenic Arashiyama district, this park offers a unique opportunity to observe Japanese macaques up close. Also known as “snow monkeys”, the mountain is home to over 120 of these playful, interesting animals.

Visitors can hike to the top of the hill, where monkeys roam freely in a natural habitat. The panoramic views of Kyoto from the summit add to the overall charm of the experience.

3. Fushimi Inari Shrine

Renowned for its iconic path lined with thousands of vibrant torii gates, Fushimi Inari Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god of rice and prosperity.

The trail leads to the sacred Mount Inari, passing through atmospheric tunnels of gates, creating a memorable and spiritual journey.

Pro tip: Get here early to avoid crowds, ideally sunrise!

4. Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Perched on a hillside, Kiyomizu-dera offers breathtaking views of Kyoto. The temple’s wooden terrace is particularly famous, providing a panoramic outlook during the cherry blossom and fall foliage seasons. The complex also houses various halls and pagodas, adding to its historical significance.

5. Geisha walking tour of Gion District

Gion is Kyoto’s historic geisha district, characterized by narrow streets and traditional wooden machiya houses.

A walking tour offers insights into the fascinating world of geisha, their cultural significance, and a chance to spot these elegantly dressed performers.

Rooted in centuries of tradition, geisha are highly skilled performers who excel in various traditional arts such as dance, music, and conversation. Kyoto, the historical heart of Japan, provides a glimpse into this elegant and elusive world.

Geisha culture thrives in Kyoto’s Gion district, where narrow cobblestone streets transport you to a bygone era. Take a stroll beneath the glow of paper lanterns, and you might catch a fleeting glimpse of geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha) gracefully making their way to appointments.

The first time I saw a Geisha walking through the streets of Kyoto, I nearly passed out with excitement.

However if you are lucky enough to see a geisha or maiko, please be respectful and do not swarm them for selfies. We joked on my first trip to Japan that we went on “Geisha Safaris”. A few of us grabbed a bench in the Gion area and would at a distance, respectfully people watch in the area. It was so fun to see them coming and going! We never approached them but it was incredible to see them all dressed up and walking down the cobblestone street of Kyoto at night.

Visiting Kyoto without experiencing the allure of geisha is like missing a chapter in Japan’s cultural story. It’s an encounter with history, artistry, and poise that leaves an indelible mark on your journey through this city of timeless beauty.

6. Dinner with a Maiko (apprentice Geisha)

This unique experience allows visitors to interact with a Maiko, enjoying an evening of traditional entertainment, music, and dance. It provides a rare glimpse into the intricate rituals and customs of the geisha world.

The allure of Kyoto’s Gion district lies not only in its historical charm but also in the graceful presence of Geisha or Maiko (apprentice geishas.)

To respectfully capture their ethereal beauty, consider booking a “meet and greet” dinner, an opportunity that not only allows you to photograph a Maiko up close but does so with their explicit permission.

In Kyoto, you are not supposed to approach Geisha or Maikos on the street for selfies. And you definitely should never grab or touch one in an attempt to get a photo.

These specialized tours offer an intimate and culturally enriching experience, where you can learn about the intricate artistry of the Maiko and capture their mesmerizing transformation into the epitome of grace. Remember, the key is to approach this experience with reverence, ensuring that your photography respects the privacy and dignity of these iconic figures.

This is the exact tour I booked in Kyoto and I highly recommend it. While the dinner wasn’t our favorite, it is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet with an actual Maiko, an apprentice Geisha!

7. Traditional kimono rental

Countless kimono rental shops around Kyoto provides an authentic experience of wearing a traditional kimono, allowing visitors to stroll through Kyoto’s streets in classic Japanese attire, enhancing the cultural immersion.

Wander through the historic streets, visit ancient temples, or pose by cherry blossoms in full traditional regalia, creating a visual narrative that beautifully intertwines modern photography with Japan’s classical elegance.

I suggest you plan ahead and reserve your kimono rental, particularly during peak seasons, to ensure a smooth experience.

I have personally rented from Yume Kyoto Kodaiji Shop.

They have a gorgeous selection of kimonos and it isn’t an expensive activity! You can even opt to have your hair done as well for roughly $10 or 1,500 yen.

This shop is also a 3 minute walk away from one of the most iconic photo spots in Kyoto: Hokan-ji Temple also known as the Yasaka Pagoda.

Pro tip: If you rent from this particular shop, there is a great shooting spot right out the backdoor. Since it’s off a side street, it’s not packed. And the traditional style roofs not only look great but provide shade so you can shoot great quality photos even at peak daylight hours when often the shadows (and crowds!!) would be too much on the main street.

8. Traditional boat ride in Arashiyama

Explore the scenic beauty of Arashiyama from the gentle flow of the Katsura River. Traditional boat rides offer a tranquil and picturesque perspective of this historic area.

If you’re lucky, a market boat will cruise over to your boat and attach itself so you can buy traditional Japanese snacks and cold drinks, even beer!

9. Dinner at Daitoryo

Daitoryo offers a culinary journey with a 10-13 course menu, served in a traditional setting with servers dressed in kimonos.

This dining experience showcases the artistry of Japanese cuisine.

And it was an absolute highlight of our time in Kyoto! My photos don’t do it justice. But we absolutely loved everything about this place. We were waiting in eager anticipation to see each course and how it was beautifully prepared.

10. K36 Rooftop Bar

Located in a hotel, K36 Rooftop Bar provides a sophisticated atmosphere and panoramic views of the city. Head over for golden hour or sunset to enjoy the changing colors of the sky.

We just did drinks and some light snacks but they had a food menu as well.

Pro tip: There is a small cover charge to enter the hotel bar as a non-hotel guest. However we found that it kept the place less crowded which was nice!

11. Bamboo Forest

Arashiyama’s Bamboo Forest is a mesmerizing natural wonder. Tall bamboo shoots create a serene pathway, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and photographers.

12. Hokan-ji Temple: Frame the Moment

Capture a snapshot of your Kyoto adventure at Hokan-ji, commonly known as Yasaka Pagoda. This ancient structure, nestled in the Higashiyama district, provides a stunning backdrop for a memorable photo. Frame yourself against the pagoda’s elegance, creating a visual memoir of your journey through Kyoto’s cultural heart.

If you’ve googled a picture of Kyoto before, you’ve probably seen this street pop up! It can be quite a popular photo spot, so if you want an empty street, I suggest you go in the morning. You can read all about my photo tips for Japan here.

13. Traditional Tea Ceremony

Immerse yourself in the meditative and ritualistic world of the Japanese tea ceremony. Experience the precise art of tea preparation and the cultural significance associated with this ancient practice.

There are a variety of great ones you can book but I would suggest this one or this one.

14. Ghibli Studios Shop

Perfect for fans of Studio Ghibli, this shop offers a variety of merchandise related to the beloved animated films produced by the studio, allowing visitors to take home a piece of the magic.

And you may want to watch one of the famous animated classics before coming to Japan!

15. Kendo Master Class

Learn the art of Kendo, a Japanese martial art that emphasizes discipline and respect.

A master class provides hands-on experience in using bamboo swords and understanding the philosophy behind this traditional practice.

You can book this experience here.

This small-group Kendo lesson in Kyoto is led by an instructor who is the great-grandson of a Samurai warrior. As well as learning new skills, the experience reveals heroic family stories that you wouldn’t hear otherwise.

During the class, have an opportunity to wear Kendo armor, watch demonstrations of basic Kendo moves, and even engage in a match with your opponent.

16. Shop For Unique Japanese Bomber Jackets: BSC Gallery

Explore the BSC Gallery for a unique collection of Japanese bomber jackets.

This contemporary art space merges fashion and culture, offering a distinctive shopping experience.

You can find jackets like this at a variety of Japanese retailers but this shop in particular has stunning ones! Just go with a budget in mind. The top-of-the-line jackets that are reversible, premium silk and covered in art work can get up to nearly $400 USD. However they have jaw-droppingly beautiful ones for $200 USD as well. You can also get their cheapest line and children’s jackets as well. And all of them are equally stunning!

2023 Highlights

After falling in love with Japan during my own travels, I was SO excited to return with my company, Wanderlust Group Trips!

We had a jam-packed itinerary full of inclusions that took us all around Japan for 11 amazing days.

Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo

Everyone flew into Tokyo for the start of our trip.

A little jetlagged, we all met up at our hotel in the Asakusa neighborhood to go to our first dinner together as a group with our guide, Mike!

After dinner, we headed to Senso-ji Temple at night to see it lit up and without the crowds.

Day 2:

We woke up the next day and headed to Senso-ji Temple again to see it during the day. Since it’s located just a 4 minute walk from our hotel, it was the perfect start to our day exploring Tokyo.

We had some free time to shop on the historic Nakamise-dori Street for beautiful Japanese-made souvenirs.

After our temple exploration, we met back at the hotel for a quick debrief on Japanese culture and customs before heading out to the Harajuku district.

Once we finished with the hustle and bustle on Takeshita Street, we walked to the nearby Meiji Shrine.

After the temple, we went to observe the famous Shibuya Crossing during the day. We had, in my opinion, the best ramen in the world for dinner before heading out to Tokyo’s electric town.

That evening we visited Japanese arcades before ending the night at a quirky maid cafe where we celebrated Noah’s birthday!

Day 3: Sushi & TeamLABS

The first activity of the day was a sushi making class!

When we finished our sushi class, we made our way over to the Instagram-famous digital art exhibit, teamLab Planets.

After the dazzling art exhibit, we went to an observation deck for views over Tokyo before continuing on to “Piss Alley”, a historic row of tiny restaurants along a super atmospheric street.

Day 4: Hakone & Mt Fuji Views

As we left Tokyo, we headed to Hakone, a smaller mountain town famous for its Mount Fuji views.

Upon arrival, we checked into a traditional guesthouse then began our journey up the mountain via cable cars and trains.

We were super fortunate and had amazingly clear views of the mountain!

After the cable car up to see Mount Fuji, we took a scenic boat ride before returning to our traditional guesthouse where we had dinner together as a group.

Day 5: Takayama

In the morning, we departed towards Takayama via the scenic train! The views as we traveled along were absolutely stunning. We saw fantastic fall colors along the river and at one point even found ourselves in a winter wonderland of a lansdcape covered in snow!

By the time we reached Takayama, it was sunny and there was no snow in sight. So we checked into the historic temple where we would be spending the night before heading to the stunning little main street of the town.

Mike led us on a mini-food tour through Takayama so everyone could have the chance to try the famous hida beef that comes from this region and the best ice cream in Japan.

That evening, we had free time to explore! Some of the group went to an onsen (a Japanese bath) while others tried Japanese archery.

Later in the evening, we visited a sake bar before heading to a local bar that we had open just for our group!

Day 6: Morning markets & Kyoto

Each morning, the temple hosts prayer and meditation sessions that are open to guests to attend.

Some of our group joined in on the optional mediation and prayer while I captured photos of everyone around the temple.

After the mediation activity and photos, we headed to the Takayama morning market.

Around noon, we headed to the train station to take a bullet train to our next destination: Kyoto!

We checked into our hotel and met up that evening for a walking tour of the Gion District. (The geisha district of Kyoto!)

During our tour, we had a working geisha pass right by us, the excitement in our group was off the charts as she went by! But we all quietly stepped aside and let her pass by uninterrupted, even though we were bursting with joy at our first spontaneous run in with a working geisha. (Or Gaiko as they are known in Kyoto!)

Following our tour, a handful of us wound up going to a super traditional 10-course Japanese meal along the river. It was my favorite meal of the trip!

Day 7: Tori Gates & Kimono Rental

It was a very early start to our day as we headed towards Fushimi Inari Shrine, the famous 10,000+ torii gates. Worth the super early wake up because when we got there, we nearly had the place to ourselves and this place can get PACKED.

From there, we visited the iconic Kiyomizu-dera Temple with jaw-dropping views over Kyoto.

We wandered through the temple gardens before heading to our kimono rental appointment.

Everyone in the group opted for the kimono rental and we had a blast doing so!

How great does everyone look in their traditional kimono?!

Following our kimono rentals, we had free time to explore Kyoto. Some of us ladies went to K36 Rooftop for incredible views over Kyoto! That night we all met up at a quirky, but fun, rock bar for drinks.

Day 8: Golden Pavilion & Kendo

The stunning Golden Pavilion was the first stop of the morning!

Afterwards, we stopped by the oldest zen garden/traditional temple in Kyoto.

Grabbing some food in Kyoto, we then headed to our Kendo martial arts class after lunch with the descendant of a real Japanese samurai.

The kendo workshop is an amazing and unique look into Japanese culture and history.

That evening, some of the group opted to go to dinner with a true Geisha apprentice, a Maiko.

It was once-in-a-lifetime to meet an actual working Maiko. We had a Q&A session before she performed a number of songs and games with us.

Day 9: Bamboo Forest & Monkey Mountain

Our first stop of the morning was Kyoto’s famous bamboo forest in the Arashiyama district.

From there, we hiked up the nearby hill to “Mountain Monkey” where about 120 snow monkeys (or Japanese Macaque) live on the scenic mountain top.

Once we finished photographing, feeding and observing the playful clan of monkeys, we continued on to take a traditional boat ride on the Katsura River.

This scenic and calming boat ride was a highlight for me personally. We had beautiful fall colors as our guide rowed us along the river.

Along the way, a market boat pulled up and tethered to our boat. All sorts of drinks, snacks and food were available for purchase. Soon many of us were sipping on a cold beer or soda while snacking on some Japanese rice balls as we floated along.

When we finished our boat ride, we made our way back to the main area of Kyoto for lunch. After, we took one last train to head to our final destination: Osaka!

For our first night in Osaka, we had a family dinner at a delicious Japanese restaurant where we could order small plates off an ipad to the table over the course of our dinner. It was a super fun environment and great food!

Day 10: Nara Park & Osaka

On our final full day, we visited the famous bowing deer in Nara Park.

Just a short train ride away from our hotel in Osaka, this was the perfect morning trip!

The fall colors were stunning and the temple inside Nara Park was my favorite temple of the entire trip.

When we finished at Nara Park, we headed to the stunning Osaka Castle. Mike brought us to a beautiful vantage point before we headed up to the rooftop bar overlooking the castle.

That evening, we gathered in our hotel lobby to head out on a street food tour led by our guide.

After trying all the unique and interesting Osaka eats, we went for karaoke + unlimited drinks, a huge trend in Japanese nightlife!

When the group finished at karaoke, we went to one last dance club to toast farewell to our trip together!

After a fun and busy trip, it was time to head for home!

Japan, a land where ancient traditions meet cutting-edge modernity, offers a visual feast for photographers seeking to capture its diverse beauty.

It truly is such an exciting country to photograph from the mountains to ancient temples to ultra-modern cities.. I am certain you will LOVE Japan.

I first traveled to Japan in February of 2022 with One Life Adventures (read about my first trip here!) then have begun going back annually with my company Wanderlust Group Trips.

Before we dive into specific Japan related tips, here are a few frequently asked questions about my travel photos:

• My camera is the Canon 90D.
• I mostly edit in the mobile app Lightroom. I have the paid version but there is also a free version. However, if you take a lot of photos, the paid version is absolutely worth it.
• The biggest improvement I saw in my photos came when I upgraded my kit lens (this is the lens I shoot with the most!!) and began shooting in RAW.
• Check out Snapseed and Airbrush for editing too. I use these apps to remove wrinkles from clothes, remove people from the background etc.
• I shoot on manual mode in RAW format with my camera. If you have a camera and you’re still shooting on automatic, watch this video to start shooting in manual

1. Time Your Travels Right: Seasons Matter

Japan’s beauty changes with the seasons.

Cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant foliage in autumn, and snow-covered landscapes in winter offer distinct photographic opportunities.

Research the best time to visit based on your preferred scenery and plan your trip accordingly.

Keep in mind, for fall colors or cherry blossom season, you’ll want to book hotel and activities far enough in advance.

2. Early Bird Catches the Photo

Popular spots like Fushimi Inari Shrine and Arashiyama Bamboo Grove draw crowds.

Arrive early to capture these iconic locations in the soft morning light without the distraction of masses, allowing your photos to reflect the serene beauty of these landmarks.

Sensoji Temple is one of the most popular spots in Tokyo. We went before 9am on a weekday to capture photos without anyone in them. It still required some patience and some creative posing (there are people behind me that I am blocking from my crouched down position!) but the earlier you wake up, the easier time you’ll have capturing photos!

3. Utilize the Crowds For Unique/Artistic Shots

Tokyo is the largest city in the world. A whopping 4x larger than New York City.

There will absolutely be unavoidable crowds at places like Nakamise-dori Street or the world’s busiest crossing, Shibuya Scramble.

So if a crowd is unavoidable, try using them to your advantage!

Below, we shot with a super slow shutter speed to capture the whirl of the crowd around me at the famous markets on Nakamise-dori Street.

While at the famous Shibuya Crossing, we used the crowd to create a tunnel around us in the center of the picture!

4. Book a Photography Airbnb Experience

Japan is full of really talented photographers selling photo tours on Airbnb for a really reasonable price.

For example, the “electric town” of Tokyo is such a unique and exciting place to photograph!

However night photos can be tricky for even established photographers. And if you shoot with a tripod, it’s a crowded area that makes self portraits super difficult.

If you want to have a local photographer show you around the area at night while capturing dazzling shots under the lights, you can book a number of great photographers on Airbnb Experiences.

You can also find really great photographers (at a great price!) in Osaka and Kyoto if you want professional pictures in kimonos or around Japan’s other iconic cities. They are also listed on Airbnb Experience!

Here is a great one that I have personally done and highly recommend.

I have also worked with the photographer from this photo experience in Tokyo. I simply messaged him on the app and asked to meet outside of his tour hours since I was hoping for a daytime shoot with him.

He was the one who took the photos of my best friend and I at Shibuya Crossing where a tripod would have been impossible!

5. Local Style: Shop for Unique Pieces

Enhance your photos by incorporating local fashion finds.

Explore markets and boutiques to discover traditional garments or modern pieces that showcase Japan’s unique style.

These additions not only enhance your wardrobe and make for wonderful souvenirs but also lend authenticity to your photographs.

During my group trip to Japan, we loved shopping for the iconic Japanese style bomber jackets.

If you’re willing to splurge and invest in a really great one, I suggest shopping at BSC Gallery in Kyoto. They have incredibly intricate, beautiful and unique jackets here.

But you can also find more affordable options at Don Quijote, the biggest chain discount store in Japan.

In Osaka, we found really great Japanese jackets for sale at the Osaka Castle gift shop below the rooftop restaurant and at the Japan Culture & Character Shop Guf.

In addition to a Japanese bomber jacket, I bought a beautiful kimono-style bathrobe to sleep in.

I found it at the one of the historic market stalls along Nakamise-dori Street in Tokyo. (There were multiple shops selling kimonos like this there!)

Other favorite accessories I bought in Japan included a fan, a Japanese style hair clip and paper crane earrings.

6. Connect with Local Photographers

Forge connections with local photographers to gain insights into hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path locations.

Social media platforms and photography communities can be invaluable for finding like-minded individuals who can offer tips, share experiences, and even accompany you on photography excursions.

If you search hashtags like #tokyophotographer or #kyotophotoshoot on Instagram, you’ll be able to come across some amazing photographers for hire!

Here are a few photographers I would recommend that you can reach out to on social media:

• Future_Vizion – he takes particularly amazing night shots around Tokyo!
• Isa.raw_– runs a nighttime Airbnb experience in Tokyo but I messaged her on Instagram and asked if she was free to take pictures during one of my free mornings in Tokyo and we shot the pictures I have at Senso-ji Shrine
• Jariay – popular photographer in Tokyo, I have never worked with him as he has always been booked. If you want to shoot with him, reach out early!
• Deniz – photographer in Tokyo
• Lucas– located in Kyoto area and owns a kimono rental studio as well
• Jojo– located in Shizuoka but can travel & was really quick to respond to my DMs.

7. Chasing Fuji: Plan for the Unpredictable

No trip to Japan is complete without a glimpse of the iconic Mount Fuji. However, the elusive peak is known to hide behind clouds.

Ensure you capture its majesty by booking multiple days in the region and opting for refundable accommodations.

Keep a keen eye on weather forecasts, and if the mountain remains coy, use the extra days to explore the surrounding picturesque landscapes, turning your Mount Fuji quest into an unforgettable adventure.

P.S. Hakone is one of the best towns for Mount Fuji views!

Utilize the efficient public transportation system and consider neighborhood clusters to maximize your time.

From the historic charm of Asakusa to the neon-lit streets of Shibuya, careful planning ensures you capture Tokyo’s multifaceted allure without feeling overwhelmed by its expansive cityscape.

I would suggest that you make a Google Maps saved list of all the places you want to go in Tokyo. You may not realize it but some spots will be over an hour apart on the metro. Tokyo is huge.

If you’re not traveling during peak traffic hours, you can also use uber in Tokyo to get from spot to spot.

Pro tip: Have a PASMO card ready to go and added to your Apple Wallet so you can easily and quickly get on and off the metro or bus!

9. TeamLab: A Visual Wonderland Awaits

A visit to TeamLab’s immersive art exhibits is a must for any photographer seeking a surreal visual experience. To ensure you don’t miss out on this mesmerizing journey, book your tickets in advance. Keep in mind that these popular exhibits can sell out quickly.

Prepare for a unique twist—visitors are required to remove their shoes and socks before entering certain installations.

Plan your outfit accordingly for a seamless and enjoyable experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the captivating world of TeamLab’s boundary-pushing artistry.

Keep in mind, you will be required to go through the art exhibit barefoot as some of the rooms are filled with water.

Furthermore, if you plan to wear a dress or a skirt, you will want to have shorts underneath. There are many mirrors on the floor so your underwear will be fully visible if you don’t wear shorts. (TeamLABS does provide free rental shorts if you need a pair however!)

10. Kimono Chronicles: Renting Elegance in Kyoto

Elevate your Japanese photography adventure by donning a traditional kimono, especially when exploring the cultural gem of Kyoto. Many rental shops offer an array of vibrant kimonos, allowing you to step back in time and seamlessly blend with Kyoto’s timeless charm.

Wander through the historic streets, visit ancient temples, or pose by cherry blossoms in full traditional regalia, creating a visual narrative that beautifully intertwines modern photography with Japan’s classical elegance.

Remember to plan ahead and reserve your kimono rental, particularly during peak seasons, to ensure a smooth experience as you capture the essence of Kyoto’s cultural tapestry.

They have a gorgeous selection of kimonos and it isn’t an expensive activity! You can even opt to have your hair done as well for roughly $10 or 1,500 yen.

This shop is also a 3 minute walk away from one of the most iconic photo spots in Kyoto: Hokan-ji Temple also known as the Yasaka Pagoda.

Pro tip: If you rent from this particular shop, there is a great shooting spot right out the backdoor. Since it’s off a side street, it’s not packed. And the traditional style roofs not only look great but provide shade so you can shoot great quality photos even at peak daylight hours when often the shadows (and crowds!!) would be too much on the main street.

11. Cultural Courtesy: Navigating Japan’s Photography Etiquette

In the land of politeness and precision, respecting local customs is paramount for a seamless photographic journey through Japan. Here are some essential etiquettes to bear in mind:

• No Tripods at Crowded Spots: While capturing the perfect shot is tempting, many popular sites prohibit tripods during peak hours. Embrace the challenge and rely on your skills to capture steady and stunning images without disrupting the flow of fellow admirers.
• Geisha Grace: A Snapshot with Respect: In Kyoto’s Gion district, where the elusive geishas gracefully roam, resist the urge to bombard them with photo requests. Appreciate their artistry from a distance, and if you’re lucky enough for spot them, just appreciate the moment for how unique special it is.
• Always Ask Before Snapping: Japan’s emphasis on harmony extends to photography. Before capturing portraits of locals, especially in rural or residential areas, seek permission with a polite “Sumimasen, shashin o totte mo ii desu ka?” (Excuse me, is it okay to take a photo?). To respectfully capture their ethereal beauty, consider booking a “meet and greet” tour, an opportunity that not only allows you to photograph a Maiko up close but does so with their explicit permission.

In Kyoto, you are not supposed to approach Geisha or Maikos on the street for selfies. And you definitely should never grab or touch one in an attempt to get a photo.

These specialized tours offer an intimate and culturally enriching experience, where you can learn about the intricate artistry of the Maiko and capture their mesmerizing transformation into the epitome of grace. Remember, the key is to approach this experience with reverence, ensuring that your photography respects the privacy and dignity of these iconic figures.

Everything You Need To Know Before Your Trip

Buckle up, because you’re about to embark on an epic journey to the land of sushi, samurai, and serene landscapes – Japan!

Get ready for a whirlwind of cultural wonders, bustling cities, and the warmest hospitality you’ve ever encountered.

If you follow me on Instagram or TikTok, you’ll know just how much I adore this country.

I’m here to spill the tea (green tea, to be precise) on all the tips and tricks you need for an unforgettable trip to the Land of the Rising Sun. Here are my best Japan travel tips for your first visit!

1. Have Pasmo in your Apple Wallet ready to go

Skip the queues and have the Pasmo card ready and topped up before you land. This nifty little e-card in your Apple Wallet is your golden ticket for seamless travel on trains, buses, and even vending machines. There are multiple card options but I found just having Pasmo covered everything I needed while traveling around Japan aside from the bullet trains.

Yes you can get a physical card too. But it’s faster and more simple to just have it on your phone so you can instantly top it up and quickly tap in and out of any public transit. It’s a breeze. And to get around Tokyo, using the metro occasionally is almost unavoidable.

How to add a new Suica, PASMO, or ICOCA card on your iPhone or Apple Watch

1. To add a card:
   • iPhone: Open the Wallet app and tap the Add button .
   • Apple Watch: On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and tap the My Watch tab. Then scroll down, tap Wallet & Apple Pay, and tap Add Card.
2. Tap Transit Card.
3. Choose the card that you want to add.
4. Tap Continue.
5. Choose an amount to put on the card and tap Add.
6. Follow the steps on the screen to confirm your purchase and add your Suica, PASMO, or ICOCA card.

2. Wear comfortable shoes you can easily take off

Say konnichiwa to comfort! Japan’s streets are made for exploring, you’ll be walking a ton. And there are a LOT of stairs when boarding trains etc.

Pack those stylish yet comfortable shoes that you can slip on and off with ease, especially when you find yourself in a traditional ryokan.

Many hotels and restaurants will actually require you to take your shoes off before entering.

And FYI, having mismatched socks covered with holes is a bit of a faux pas.

3. Avoid directly saying “No”

In Japan, direct confrontation is a no-no.

Saying “no” outright can be deemed impolite. Instead, opt for a polite decline with a smile – it goes a long way.

In fact, you’ll likely notice that Japanese people rarely say “no” themselves. If you ask a question to which the answer is no, they will likely find a more round-a-bout polite way of letting you know.

4. Learn the Art of Silence on Public Transport

Japanese trains are a sanctuary of peace. Keep your volume low and save those deep conversations for when you’re not surrounded by serene commuters. You’ll see signs everywhere asking you to keep quiet on trains and buses.

If you are speaking loudly, you can expect a local to ask you to quiet down.

Even at times when I thought I was talking more quietly, I have had an older Japanese woman confess to me that the volume I spoke at was extremely distressing to her and she found it very stressful. I felt awful as I thought I was already talking in a quieter voice.

Americans, this may be a bit of a culture shock to you especially hah!

In public transit especially, people are almost entirely silent.

5. Embrace the Conbini: 7 Eleven & Lawson

Convenience stores, or “conbinis,” are a traveler’s best friend. From delicious snacks to essential supplies, these 24/7 wonders have you covered and are beloved in Japan.

You might not eat sushi from a gas station back home but here in Japan, 7 Elevens & Lawsons are renowned for the high quality & affordable food.

It’s also a great place to stop and use the ATM or buy alcohol.

6. No tipping in Japan

It may seem bizarre (especially for Americans who are used to tipping on nearly everything) but Japan does not have a tipping culture.

In fact, any attempts to leave a tip will almost certainly be turned down. It can seem insulting to the server or potentially awkward when they run after you with the cash you “accidentally” left behind.

The belief in Japan is that you already are paying for good service when you dine out!

7. Respect the Queues

Queues in Japan are a work of art.

Don’t be the one to disrupt the harmony – wait your turn patiently, whether it’s for a ramen joint or the next Shinkansen.

Politeness is very important in Japanese culture. you won’t see people rushing for trains, budging in lines or pushing to get to the front. So do as the Japanese do while you’re here and respectfully get in line!

8. Embrace the Onsen Experience

Hot springs, or onsens, are a quintessential Japanese experience. Remember to cleanse yourself thoroughly before taking a dip – it’s a pre-soak ritual!

Keep in mind, it is required that you be completely naked. This can be alarming or uncomfortable to foreign visitors. It’s because towels or clothes from outside are considered already dirty and should not be brought into the bath.

If the idea of nudity makes you uncomfortable, at least it may help to know that the men and women will have entirely separate bathing areas.

9. Be Mindful of Your Tattoos

While attitudes are changing, tattoos are often associated with the yakuza which are Japanese gangsters or organized crime mobsters.

Some onsens and public baths may have tattoo restrictions, so check ahead. There are tattoo-friendly onsen though so if you have tattoos, don’t feel discouraged.

10. Pack Light, Shop Big

With fashion districts like Harajuku calling your name, leave some space in your suitcase. You’ll want to fill it with the latest trends and quirky souvenirs.

Not to mention if you are traveling on the bullet train (and I suggest that you do!) there are luggage restrictions.

11. Street Food Feast

Takoyaki, taiyaki, okonomiyaki – the list goes on! Japan’s street food game is strong. Don’t be shy; try a bit of everything.

You absolutely cannot miss “Piss Alley” in Tokyo. (Also known as Omoide Yokocho.) This is one of the most fun, interesting & unique spots to get brave in your street food game. You’ll spot things on the menu like pig diagram and (pardon my french but this is how it was listed..) pig asshole even. Yes, that restaurant I ate at in Piss Alley was actually serving pig asshole.

“Piss Alley” is a long, narrow street lined with lanterns that absolutely comes alives at night! Each of the tiny restaurants along the way only seat a few people. If you come as a group, you’ll need to split up. Bring cash and get ready to eat your way down this historic, legendary alley of culinary delights.

Takeshita Street in Tokyo’s Harajuku district is another spot you can’t miss!

It is the perfect place to try quirky Japanese sweets and treats!

12. Mind Your Manners with Chopsticks

Avoid sticking chopsticks upright in a bowl – it resembles a funeral ritual. And it can seem rude or uninformed.

Lay them across the bowl or on the provided holder.

13. Avoid making changes to a restaurant dish

As the Japanese are an incredibly polite society, it can be considered rude or ungrateful to ask for a swap on your meal in a restaurant. Some places flat out will not allow it.

Unless you have a major allergy (like needing to order a dish without peanuts) it’s not common practice to customize meals here. Just order the dish as it comes and be brave! Japan’s culinary scene is sure to delight and surprise you.

14. It’s a difficult country for vegetarians and vegan

Between not customizing dishes and menus that are frequently only in Japanese, I have found it very difficult to be vegetarian in Japan while traveling around.

I’ve been vegetarian for about 5 years now but when I come to Japan, I make some “cultural exceptions.”

Even when I have tried to be vegetarian here, the language barrier makes it difficult and often when I ordered a meal thinking it was vegetarian, it still came with meat.

In Tokyo, I ordered cheese stuffed pepper skewers off the vegetarian menu & they came wrapped in bacon. Yes, bacon.

That being said, it’s getting more common in Tokyo and here’s 15 vegan/vegetarian restaurants for you to try!

15. Don’t take an airport taxi in Tokyo

Unfortunately, a taxi from any one of Tokyo’s airports is incredibly expensive.

They tend to cost around $200-$300 one way. Crazy right? Plus the Tokyo traffic is just horrendous.

It will take you less time (and WAY less money) to take the public transit in from the city.

I have found arriving at Narita is especially simple to get to Tokyo with the Skyliner.

16. Mount Fuji is often NOT visible

If you get to see this iconic mountain, consider yourself lucky. She’s often hidden behind clouds or fog.

17. Book an Airbnb Experience to capture epic shots

Japan is full of really talented photographers selling photo tours on Airbnb for a really reasonable price.

For example, the “electric town” of Tokyo is such a unique and exciting place to photograph!

However night photos can be tricky for even established photographers. And if you shoot with a tripod, it’s a crowded area that makes self portraits super difficult.

If you want to have a local photographer show you around the area at night while capturing dazzling shots under the lights, you can book a number of great photographers on Airbnb Experiences.

You can also find really great photographers (at a great price!) in Osaka and Kyoto if you want professional pictures in kimonos or around Japan’s other iconic cities. They are also listed on Airbnb Experience!

Here is a great one that I have personally done and highly recommend.

Airbnb photographers also make it much easier to capture photos in places like Shibuya Crossing, the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing in the world!

18. Respectfully learn about geisha culture in Kyoto

In the ancient streets of Kyoto, immerse yourself in the enchanting world of geisha, a captivating facet of Japan’s rich cultural tapestry.

Rooted in centuries of tradition, geisha are highly skilled performers who excel in various traditional arts such as dance, music, and conversation. Kyoto, the historical heart of Japan, provides a glimpse into this elegant and elusive world.

Geisha culture thrives in Kyoto’s Gion district, where narrow cobblestone streets transport you to a bygone era. Take a stroll beneath the glow of paper lanterns, and you might catch a fleeting glimpse of geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha) gracefully making their way to appointments.

Don’t miss the opportunity to attend a traditional tea house, or “ochaya,” where geisha entertain guests with their exquisite talents. Through their performances, elaborate kimonos, and timeless grace, geisha embody the epitome of Japanese refinement.

The first time I saw a Geisha walking through the streets of Kyoto, I nearly passed out with excitement.

However if you are lucky enough to see a geisha or maiko, please be respectful and do not swarm them for selfies. We joked on my first trip to Japan that we went on “Geisha Safaris”. A few of us grabbed a bench in the Gion area and would at a distance, respectfully people watch in the area. It was so fun to see them coming and going! We never approached them but it was incredible to see them all dressed up and walking down the cobblestone street of Kyoto at night.

You can actually book to see a Geisha show on Viator now which is a really rare and unique experience since they are usually by invite only. Otherwise I suggest at least talking a walking tour of the Gion area.

Visiting Kyoto without experiencing the allure of geisha is like missing a chapter in Japan’s cultural story. It’s an encounter with history, artistry, and poise that leaves an indelible mark on your journey through this city of timeless beauty.

19. Explore Beyond Tokyo and Kyoto

While Tokyo and Kyoto are fantastic, don’t miss out on lesser known gems like Nara, Takayama, Hakone, Kanazawa, or the charming countryside.

The small towns and villages in Japan have a lot to offer!

20. Make travel effortless by shipping your luggage to your next hotel

Odds are you’ll be taking bullet trains to get betweeen Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

Did you know there is an easy reliable way to go lugaage free between destinations? Even from the airport to your first hotel?

This article does a really great job of explaining everything you need to know to ship your luggage to the airport or your next hotel. It’s affordable, easy to do and really helps simplify your travel between destinations.

“The best way to travel light and easy in Japan is to use their super-efficient overnight luggage shipping services (takkyubin). You’ll never have to carry anything more than a light knapsack!“

21. Spring & fall are the best time to visit- but book in advance!

These seasons have beautifully mild weather and their own wow factors respectfully. Spring time holds the famous cherry blossom season in Japan.

While fall & early winter come alive with spectacular fall colors.

Both these seasons are terrific times to visit Japan, just book your accommodation well in advance!

Speaking of booking hotels, choosing a hotel in Tokyo can be really overwhelming. I like staying in Asakusa neighborhood right by Senso-ji temple.

For a hotel with a perfect location (just 3 minutes walk from Tokyo’s oldest temple!) and a reasonable price, check out Hotel MONday Asakusa.

For a more luxury option with a view in the same great neighborhood, go for Asakusa View Hotel.

22. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Safety first! Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance to cover any unexpected hiccups on your journey.

23. Lack of garbage cans

In the Land of the Rising Sun, cleanliness is a cultural cornerstone, and the streets of Japan reflect this meticulous mindset.

Be prepared for the absence of public garbage bins – a testament to the nation’s commitment to cleanliness.

While exploring this pristine paradise, pack a small plastic bag to carry your trash until you find a disposal spot.

Embrace the challenge of keeping your surroundings immaculate, and witness firsthand how Japan’s collective respect for cleanliness transforms every corner into a spotless haven.

Remember, leaving no trace isn’t just a travel tip; it’s a chance to partake in Japan’s unwavering commitment to tidiness.

24. Avoid eating on the go

In Japan, the art of dining is a nuanced experience that extends beyond the flavors on your plate.

Resist the temptation to eat while strolling – a practice frowned upon here but common elsewhere in the world. (New York for example! Where people are constantly eating on the go!)

Polite signs in stores kindly remind patrons to savor their meals in one spot, allowing each bite to be a deliberate moment of enjoyment. (Signs will say “Please do not eat while walking” or “No eating allowed in shop”etc.)

In Japan, it’s not just about what you eat but how you savor it – a mindful journey through a world of gastronomic delight.

Although it a difficult habit for me personally to break, I find the attention given to each interaction or meal to be very charming and beautiful. (But yes, I have been politely shooed out of a 7-11 for opening my small bag of candies and beginning to eat it while my friend was still checking out. Eating in stores, even grocery stores, is a big no!)

25. Spend the night in a traditional temple

We stayed at the stunning Takayama Zenkoji and it was an absolute highlight of our trip!

It’s located just a short walk from the historic district of Takayama and is absolutely stunning.

In the morning, you’ll have the option to add a morning prayer or meditation class. The morning prayer is free but the mediation class has a small additional fee. I attended the prayer and found it very interesting and very worthwhile for the early wake up call!

Between the gardens and the architecture, it’s a beautiful place to take pictures as well.

26. Place your cash or credit card in the small tray provided when settling a bill

In Japan, the art of customer service is taken to meticulous heights, even in the seemingly simple act of settling a bill.

When checking out at stores, you’ll often encounter a small tray strategically placed near the cash register. This unassuming tray serves a purpose beyond its practicality – it’s a cultural gesture of respect. Instead of handing your cash or credit card directly to the cashier, placing your payment on the tray signifies a thoughtful and considerate transaction.

It’s a subtle dance of etiquette, reflecting the Japanese commitment to precision and politeness in every aspect of daily life.

So, when the tray is offered, consider it an invitation to partake in this delicate ritual, where even the exchange of currency becomes a harmonious blend of tradition and courtesy.

27. Discover the Art of Japanese Tea

Participate in a traditional tea ceremony for a deeper understanding of Japan’s rich tea culture.

We did a Japanese Tea Ceremony in Kyoto and I highly recommend it.

There are a variety of great ones you can book but I would suggest this one or this one.

28. Take part in the culture of karaoke

Karaoke in Japan is not just a pastime; it’s a cultural phenomenon that harmonizes entertainment and camaraderie. In the neon-lit streets of Tokyo or tucked away in Osaka’s vibrant districts, you’ll find karaoke joints inviting you to step into a world where everyone’s a star.

Japanese karaoke is an immersive experience, complete with private rooms, disco lights, and an extensive song list that spans genres and languages.

Whether you’re a seasoned crooner or a shy shower singer, the inclusive nature of karaoke makes it a must-try activity. From salarymen unwinding after work to groups of friends celebrating, it’s less about performing and more about hanging out in a fun, private party room with unlimited drinks while people sing sing-a-longs!

We did an hour and a half of unlimited drinks + karaoke while on tour with One Life Adventures and we had SO much fun. It’s so much less of a performance than traditional karaoke and often the whole room joined in with the singing and yes, even dancing. There was some particularly tipsy twirling and leaping going on by the last 30 minutes, hah!

So, grab the mic, cue up your favorite tunes, and order another round. It’s not just singing; it’s more about shared moments in the heart of Japan’s vibrant social scene.

29. Get excited with movies and books leading up to your trip

You will get more appreciation out of your trip (and build some pre-trip excitement!) if you read a few books and watch a few movies before you go!

31. Visit a Tokyo Maid Cafe

Prepare to be delighted and confused.

Maid cafes in Tokyo are a bizarre, whimsical experience. The atmosphere is a delightful blend of kawaii (cuteness) and hospitality, creating a unique and entertaining dining experience that is just so…. Japanese. In a traditional maid cafe, the waitresses will be dressed as, you guessed it, maids. However there are different themed maid cafes where the waitresses may dress goth or as other stylized characters.

But the idea is the same. You can order coffee or food. And many have an unlimited alcohol drink offer where you pay per 30 minutes for all-you-can-drink cocktails. (They aren’t very strong but it is a fun way to try a variety of drinks!) We were having so much fun at the maid cafe we went to that we stayed for one hour of unlimited drinks. Honestly it’s so quirky but a blast!

You will see girls dressed up as maids on the street handing out flyers for a variety of different maid cafes around Tokyo. To find a cafe, simply google “maid cafe” or go to one from a flyer.

32. Indulge in a Sake Tasting at a Local Brewery

Before my trip to Japan, I didn’t realize just how many kinds of sake there were! A tasting is a really fun way to learn about this iconic Japanese beverage.

In fact, Sake, Japan’s famed rice wine, is more than just a beverage—it’s a cultural icon with a rich history. Crafted from polished rice, water, yeast, and koji mold, sake embodies the meticulous artistry of Japanese brewing. The brewing process, known as “saké-ka,” requires precision and patience, resulting in a drink that ranges from crisp and light to rich and complex.

Sake is deeply intertwined with Japanese traditions and ceremonies, often symbolizing purity and the passage of time. It is served in various temperatures, each highlighting different flavor profiles. From the casual izakaya to formal kaiseki dining, sake complements a diverse array of Japanese cuisines.

And if you plan to visit Takayama, I recommend Harada Sake Brewery. (Although there are several great breweries in town.) This place is self service and has a wide variety of both hot and cold sake you can sample.

A local bottle of sake also makes a great souvenir or gift to bring home!

Things to consider:

• A few early morning starts

Tips for the One Life Adventures Japan Tour

• Rather than a rolling suitcase, One Life Adventures suggests using a backpack
• You’ll be walking a lot so wear comfortable shoes
• As is customary in Japan, you’ll be taking your shoes on and off a lot. Any time you enter a hotel, house or even some restaurants, you’ll be asked to take off your shoes
• Pack warm, thick socks for the overnight temple stay. Even in March, the temple was so cold we could see our breathe. However the heaters in the room are excellent and the beds have heated blankets on them. Just have extra thick warm socks to wear while walking around

The itinerary may change slightly depending on your guide but here’s everything we got up to over the 10 day trip around Japan with One Life Adventures!

Day 1

• Welcome dinner
• Evening temple visit
• Drink at Tokyo Knowledge * metro closes at midnight in Tokyo

My best friend Corbin and I flew into Tokyo for the start of the tour. I arrived on the morning of the first official day of the tour. However since the first day doesn’t officially begin until dinner time, so I had plenty of time to get to the hotel and check in/freshen up before meeting in the lobby for dinner.

Other One Life Adventure trips include an airport transfer but because there are multiple airports in Tokyo and both are super far away, the transfer to the hotel isn’t included. An airport taxi can cost as much as $300 one way (crazy!!) so the locals & tourists opt for public transit from the airport.

It was slightly intimidating to land in Tokyo and immediately figure out public transit but I felt a good sense of accomplishment when I had done it! I accidentally got on a local train by mistake so it took longer than I anticipated but I made it to my stop eventually.

It helped knowing that I could pay for the Japan transit pass on my phone. (Thanks to my friend for this tip!) So I could just tap and pay which made the ticket buying process very easy and essentially non-existent.

That evening, we met in the lobby of the hotel with the group and set off to dinner.

The trip is run exclusively with public transit so our guide, Mike (who was amazing btw!) distributed our metro cards.

We then set off for dinner and had an amazing first meal of Japanese cuisine. After dinner, Mike brought us to the stunning Sensō-ji Temple which was completed in 645, making it Tokyo’s oldest!

This is such a fun temple to see at night when it’s all lit up! Afterwards, most of the group went back to the hotel to sleep off the jet lag. Corbin and I went for a drink at a little tiny Japanese bar before catching the metro back just before midnight.

Day 2

• Japanese culture class
• Fashion District
• Harajuku street
• Temple visit
• Free time: back to Harajuku
• Vending machine ramen
• Japanese Arcades
• Maid cafe with unlimited drinks

The next morning, we met in the lobby for a quick Japanese culture class. We discussed some basic history, culture, social norms and customs around Japan.

After that, we took the transit to the fashion district. We had some free time to wander around and explore here before heading to the famous Harajuku Street.

This is one of my favorite areas of Tokyo! It is considered the birthplace of Japanese pop culture and fashion. Harajuku style refers to the Harajuku district itself. You can read a little more about the amazing Harajuku styles here.

But this vibrant street is full of quirky fashions, wild colorful foods, Japanese boy bands and a variety of animal cafes.

Corbin and I opted to go to a Shiba Dog Cafe. We had to buy a ticket and come back to our timed entrance. So if you want to do this, make sure you leave time to go and come back!

The ticket included a beverage so we hung out for about 30 minutes and got all sorts of puppy snuggles!

We met back with the group at our assigned meet time (even though we really wanted more time in the Harajuku district! There is just so much to see and so many quirky foods to try.

So all together, we went to the nearby temple: Meiji Shrine in Yoyogi Park. The walk is through a beautiful forest area and is a lovely place to escape the city chaos. It’s also a beautiful spot to take pictures! I captured these photos of Corbin below.

After our stroll through Yoyogi Park, we had free time until dinner that evening.

Immediately Corbin and I raced back to Takeshita Street, Harajuku’s iconic main street. We loved this district and wanted to see a lot more of it! Even though the street isn’t huge, there are so many interesting small offshoots. And there is no shortage of bizarre and interesting foods to try.

We also found it fascinating watching a Japanese boy band perform in a cafeteria style dining area. Not to mention, the incredible people watching! Another highlight was simply watching the Harajuku styles go by on the street. The fashion is here is truly out of this world!!

That evening, we met back up with the group for dinner in Akihabara. Mike chose this fun interesting place where we ordered ramen from vending machines. It was delicious and a fun spot just across the street from the arcades we planned to visit.

The arcades in Tokyo are a blast. And very much a part of Japanese culture. In the states, you may expect to see children and families at an arcade but here, it was mostly Japanese business men coming in after work. They set down their briefcases, took off their suit coat then went to work trying to beat their high scores.

We had so much fun trying out the different arcade games. Shortly after, we all met back up to go to a maid cafe.

I’m not entirely sure how to explain the Japanese maid cafes. I loved it but wow, it was confusing. Lots of singing and choreography and giggling Japanese girls dressed as maids but also serving you unlimited drinks? It’s truly bizarre but we laughed SO much. When you sit down, they will just set a drink menu in front of you and you can order however many drinks you’d like.

And by the time we left, we were quite tipsy. They really kept the nonstop drinks coming! We originally paid for 30 minutes but wound up wanting to stay for a full hour.

Day 3

• Sushi class
• Free time: Imperial Garden
• Tower viewpoint
• “Piss Alley”
• Hatchi Statue
• Shibuya crossing

The next morning, we started the day with a sushi making class. The class was really nicely done and we had SO much to eat.  We made miso soup, three types of sushi and learned all about the secrets behind Teriyaki.

After the class, we had free time so Corbin and I opted to go to the Imperial Gardens.

Afterwards we met back up with the group in Shinjuku to see the stunning skyline of Tokyo from an observation tower.

From there we went to the famous Omoide Yokocho alley to grab some dinner. Also known as “Piss Alley” this winding street of tiny restaurants is not to be missed on a trip to Tokyo!

If you’re an adventurous eater, you will love this place. All sorts of unique dishes are served here like pig diaphragm etc. One of the guys in my group even ordered pig assholes, pardon my french, but that’s what the menu said!

Each restaurant only holds a few people so you will need to split up from your group into pairs or groups of 3 in order to be sat.

We had a blast mingling with the locals, ordering drinks and being adventurous in our dinner order. I have been vegetarian for several years but found it really, really difficult to be vegetarian in Japan so I made a few cultural exceptions. And this dinner in “piss alley” was one of them!

After our meal, we all met back up and went to cross the famous Shibuya Pedestrian Crossing.

We saw Shibuya at night but later Corbin and I came back to capture these daytime shots!

Day 4

• Train to Hakone
• Mount Fuji viewpoint via cable car
• Free time: Brewery
• Hot Pot Dinner and games

The next day, we boarded the train to Hakone, a cute little mountain town offering views of Mount Fuji.

It can be difficult to actually spot Mt. Fuji because it’s often completely hidden behind the clouds. However, we got lucky and spotted the iconic mountain a few times briefly on the trip!

When we arrived, we checked into our cute little guest house and dropped off our bags.

Then we took a cable car up to a mountain top. From here, we could get a better view of Mount Fuji! There were cute gift shops and amazing views at the top as well.

In the evening, we had dinner at our guesthouse and played games while having some drinks! It was such a fun night getting to know everyone on our trip.

Day 5

• Bullet train to Takayama
• Check into historic Temple Stay
• Sake Brewery Tasting
• Free time: custom chopsticks, hida beef, onsen, archery, arcade games
• Dinner at Jakson Curry

The next day, we packed up and left Hakone. This time, taking a bullet train to Takayama. It’s exciting to stand on the platform and see the bullet trains whoosh past!

When we arrived in Takayama, we went right to the historic temple where we would be spending the night.

After a brief introduction about the town, we set off for our sake tasting and a small food walk through the 600 year old downtown.

This was one of my favorite stops in Japan! The beautiful architecture and cozy little shops made me fall in love with this little fairytale town.

We had an incredible dinner at Jakson Curry, learned to shoot Japanese archery and visited a Japanese onsen. For being a small town, there was so much to see and do!

That night we slept in the temple which I absolutely LOVED! (It was chilly so pack socks!) But it was easily my favorite accommodation.

Day 6

• Morning Market in Takayama
• Bullet train to Kyoto
• Gion district/Geisha Walking Tour
• Stay in pod style hostel: Ryokan Hostel Gion

The next morning, we visited the morning market to sample more unique foods and browse the little stalls and stands. It made for a really nice morning!

After that, we took the bullet train to Kyoto.

Upon arrival, we checked in our pod hostel and dropped our bags before heading out on a walking tour of Kyoto’s Geisha district.

Before you go, I highly suggest you read the famous Memoirs of Geisha or at least watch the movie! It will give you a good introduction to Kyoto’s history with Geishas. Plus several scenes in the movie are filmed around Kyoto!

That evening we visited a temple before having free time for dinner! Corbin and I had a great time wandering around the city and found some really quirky and fun locally owned bars. It was a blast!

Day 7

• Fushimi-Inari Shrine *go early & beat the crowds
• Kiyomizu-dera Temple
• Traditional Tea Ceremony
• Free time to explore
• Option to rent kimonos

The next day we woke up very early (like 5am or so!) to take the metro over to Fushimi-Inari Shrine, one of Kyoto’s most popular attractions! It was still a bit dark when we arrived.

Ideally I wish we had arrived just a *tiny* bit later because it was very dark and cold which made photos difficult. However, if we had waited much longer, the site gets completely overrun with crowds and tour buses. I highly suggest going early but time your visit so you arrive as the sun comes up!

Afterwards, we headed to the stunning Kiyomizu-dera Temple which overlooks Kyoto. It’s a beautiful and huge complex but again, we prepared for tour groups and large crowds.

Afterwards, some of the group took the metro back to our accommodation but I highly recommend walking back because it’s one of the most scenic, historic districts of Kyoto!

For a great photo and an iconic view, walk over to Hōkan-ji Temple. This street is one of the most recognizable shots of Kyoto!

I fell in love with the Higashiyama area. We loved wandering the shops and winding streets here! Plus so many people were wandering around in kimonos, it was jaw-droppingly beautiful.

Later that afternoon, we all met up to attend a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. This was a super unique and really worthwhile experience as well!

That night, our guide Mike took us on a “Geisha Safari”. We grabbed a drink from one of the many vending machines and went to the backside of one of the largest tea houses.

From here, we were able to watch the Geishas come and go discreetly without bothering them. It was INCREDIBLE to see them in person and watch them interact with the Japanese business men as they arrived. We even saw one man gift a Geisha an enormous gift bag.

If you do this though, please don’t harass the Geishas or run up to them asking for selfies etc. Be respectful and let them go about their day!

Day 8

• Golden Pavilion
• Zen Garden
• Kendo Class

The next morning, we took public transit to the jaw-dropping Golden Pavilion. It was spectacular in the morning light!

Afterwards, we toured a traditional Japanese zen garden. I really appreciated when our guide had us do a moment of silence overlooking the rock garden.

We had free time in the afternoon before meeting up for a traditional Kendo class taught by a Kendo master. This is a super unique activity that only OneLife Adventures offers.

Day 9

• Train ride to Arashiyama
• Bamboo Forest
• Monkey Mountain
• Traditional Boat Ride between the valleys
• Osaka Night Food Tour
• Unlimited Drinks Karaoke

The next morning, we took a train ride to Arashiyama to visit the bamboo forest. Although small, it’s a pretty stop which is situated right next to Monkey Mountain and a beautiful valley where we took a traditional boat ride.

A note for Monkey Mountain: it’s a bit of a hike up to the top. So wear comfortable shoes you can do a short, steep hike without any issues!

After a really nice and relaxing morning we took the train to Osaka.

Our guide led us a on a night food tour. Osaka completely blew me out of the water! I truly had not looked into the destination AT ALL before coming on this trip and had zero idea that it was like the Las Vegas of Japan. There are neon bright lights everywhere, strip clubs, go-go dancers, insane foods, wild outfits and just.. so much going on! I loved every hectic second of it though.

That evening we did karaoke with unlimited drinks which is SUPER popular in Japan! Basically you have a private rented out room and everyone takes turns with the microphone but mostly, it just turns into everyone drunk and singing all together dancing around the room.

It was the perfect way to end the night with an amazing bunch of people. That night, some of us continued the party to a nightclub in Osaka and stayed up way too late dancing. The nightlife scene in Osaka is truly wild!

Day 10

• Fly home from Osaka or take the bullet train back to Tokyo
• Option to extend with a trip to Nara Park

That morning, we went for breakfast in Osaka before taking the bullet train back to Tokyo! Corbin and I booked a few extra days in Japan at the end of the tour so we could go to DisneySea.

Others in our group continued on and did the OneLife Adventures Japan extension to Nara Park or Hiroshima.

Overall, this tour was super well-rounded and comprehensive. It was the perfect mix of city experiences, nature, history, small towns and cultural interactions. And the trip itself is really, really affordable given how expensive Japan is as a destination.

13 Best Things To Do In
This Japanese Fairytale Town

This year, I was invited to travel Japan on the award-winning OneLife Adventures 10 day tour.

So my best friend and I packed our bags and set off on the most amazing, whirlwind trip that took us all over Japan.

One of our favorite stops was the beautiful and historic, Takayama. It truly is something out of a Japanese fairytale.

For being a small town, there was SO much to do here.

Our OneLife Adventures guide, Mike, gave us a long list of recommendations. We packed as much as we could into one day and here were my favorites!

1. Spend the night in a temple

We stayed at the stunning Takayama Zenkoji and it was an absolute highlight of our trip!

It’s located just a short walk from the historic district of Takayama and is absolutely stunning.

In the morning, you’ll have the option to add a morning prayer or meditation class. The morning prayer is free but the mediation class has a small additional fee. I attended the prayer and found it very interesting and very worthwhile for the early wake up call!

Between the gardens and the architecture, it’s a beautiful place to take pictures as well.

Pro tip: It is chilly in the temple at night so pack some cozy, extra warm socks.
The rooms have individual heaters but like most places in Japan, you’ll be expected to take your shoes off when you enter. And walking around the beautiful temple is quite chilly if you don’t have warm socks!

2. Wander the Sanmachi Suji historic district

Takayama’s historic district feels like something out of a Japanese fairytale.

The narrow streets here are lined with wooden merchants’ houses dating to the Edo Period, along with many small museums, shops and sake breweries.

Pro tip: The historic main street of shops all close very early. Many by 4:30pm/5pm! So plan your day accordingly if you want to shop and do a sake tasting etc.

Pro tip: Many of the shops close at 5pm so if you want shop and wander this district,
make sure you come during the day.

3. Morning stroll at the Miyagawa Market

The Miyagawa Morning Market has been around, in one form or another, for over two centuries. And still today it’s a popular place to buy produce, coffee and gifts.

The market is located on either bank of the Miya River between the Kajibashi and Yayoibashi bridges. 

Every morning, weather permitting, you can shop for everything from local fruits and vegetables to fancy dolls and chopsticks. The food stalls here are also fantastic and I encourage you to try a few things you’ve never had before.

As with all markets, the earlier you go, the better.

The best and freshest produce will be sold first. And I think you’ll find the market is a great place to people watch!

4. Sake Tasting at A Local Brewery

When visiting Takayama, be sure to indulge in a little sake tasting!

I recommend Harada Sake Brewery but there are several in town. This place is self service and has a wide variety of both hot and cold sake you can sample.

It’s also a great place to buy a bottle of sake to bring home!

5.Visit an Onsen

The Japanese have perfected the art of onsen, or hot spring baths, for centuries.

And there are several great onsens in Takayama that you can visit during your stay.

Keep in mind, you will be completely nude while bathing and separated by gender. Some non-Japanese travelers may be surprised by this but it is the standard custom in Japan!

Not all Japanese onsen allow tattoos so it depends which onsen you plan to visit. Confirm ahead of time that you can enter if you have tattoos! Utopia Inari-yu is a tattoo friendly onsen.

But if you’re in Takayama, I would opt for the onsen at Takayama Green Hotel. And you don’t need to be staying at the hotel to use the facilities. You can simply pay to enter the onsen at a pay machine.

Pro tip: If you stay at the same temple hotel as I did, Takayama Zenkoji ,
there is a small personal onsen you can reserve and use!

6. Shop for custom chopsticks at Maruhyaku

There are so many cute shops in the historic downtown of Takayama but easily my favorite was the customs chopsticks store.

Here you can shop for chopsticks of ALL varieties.

And for an extra special souvenir or gift, you can custom order chopsticks with a name on it for FREE.

I chose to get a set with my name in both Japanese and English. Initially, I was afraid the custom printing would look cheap but they turned out BEAUTIFULLY. I highly recommend this as a present as well!

7. Learn to shoot Japanese Archery at Hankyudojo

This small shop is a Japanese archery training room.

You won’t need long here but its a fun stop worth seeking out!

When you arrive, the shop attendant will teach you the Japanese style of archery and you’ll have 10 arrows per round you purchase.

8. Try the Hida Beef

The Takayama region is famous for its hida beef. If you’re a meat eater, you’ll want to try some while in town.

“Hida Beef is a designation awarded to Japanese black cattle of the highest quality that are bred in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. Recognized as Japan’s Best Beef multiple times, the name “Hida Beef” is synonymous with succulent taste and exquisite, marbled texture.”

I suggest trying the hida beef at Jugemu right in the old town district! You’ll order at a vending machine, then take your ticket to the counter and collect your order. They serve it up fresh and have different cuts of beef you can try!

9. Try the Japanese Curry at Jakson Curry & Coffee

This hole-in-the-wall restaurant is tiny but was probably my favorite meal I had anywhere in Japan.

Our guide told us about this renowned local joint but it comes with a lot of stipulations.

There are no vegetarian options, no groups are allowed, it can be difficult to get a spot, the menu is only in Japanese… but that being said, it’s worth it. A true Japanese dining experience. They offer 4 different curries with rice and you won’t regret your choice!

Just note if you are traveling with a group like I was with OneLife Adventures, you’ll need to arrive at separate times with just 2-4 people max!

10. Try Japan’s Cremia Ice Cream

This recommendation may be slightly biased since ice cream is my favorite food but that being said…

Japan’s Cremia ice cream is UNREAL! You can try it many places throughout Japan but they do have a shop right in the historic district of Takayama.

And there is no better area to wander and take in the sites while enjoying an ice cream cone.

11. Wander through Dekonaru yokochō

Dekonaru yokochō is a tiny but fun area that will still be lively in the evening when the main historic streets close down early.

Here you can find a variety of open bars (see the next suggestion!) a fun arcade shooter game (if you’re lucky the fun, quirky host will sing for you!!) and even a gyoza vending machine.

12. Have a sake cocktail at Bar Lucca

This tiny little sake bar is located inside the Dekonaru yokochō area (listed above!).

Bar Lucca only has a handful of seats in true Japanese izakaya style.

The Japanese word izakaya (居酒屋) is made up of three kanji with the meaning, in order, “stay-drink-place.” A spot to grab a drink, settle in, and get comfortable. Usually very small and family owned. Many with a dozen seats or less.

I recommend the apple and ginger ale sake cocktail. It’s delicious!

13. Try the gyozas at Hida Takayama Gyoza Sohonzan

This highly rated gyoza restaurant is also located right in Dekonaru yokochō.

But if you’re looking for Japanese gyoza in Takayama, then there is no better place!

You can try grilled dumplings, hida beef dumplings and so much more.

There is limited seating so go early and like with most dining establishments in Japan, don’t go with a large group.
