If you follow me on social media or have read my blog before, you know I spent two years traveling the world by volunteering and working jobs as I went. These seasonal opportunities gave me the incredible chance to live and work in a region and travel it like a local instead of a tourist.

Whether I was guiding a pub crawl in Poland, working at an Oktoberfest campsite in Germany or leading road trips in the USA, these opportunities gave me the chance to travel and experience a destination in a really special way.

Often your housing is provided and you have enough time off to explore your new home, whatever that destination may be! It’s the ultimate form of slow travel. And makes traveling long-term financially possible.

It always took a ton of networking and researching on my behalf to find and locate these travel opportunities.

How To Get Free Trips As A Travel Blogger

In 2019, I started getting small free trips through my travel blog. The occasional free tour, a scenic train ride through the mountains in Colorado, a stay in a hostel in Jerusalem…

But when 2020 rolled around, the amount of sponsored trips I received exploded. Why? I was quarantined at home like everyone else during the pandemic and used this time to perfect my media kit, my pitch and my blog. I had been neglecting some key components while traveling non-stop.

Have you ever tried writing constant blog posts, editing photos, posting daily on social media and partnering with brands – all while traveling full time in countries with spotty (or zero!) wi-fi? Let me tell you, it’s hard to keep up.

The pandemic provided a much needed break to just stay home and work! I made a lot of changes to my site by adding some useful plugins.

And as soon as things started opening back up, I immediately began pitching brands and landed over a dozen free trips.

Here were a few of my sponsored trips in 2020:

So how can you get these free trips as a travel blogger?? The biggest tip I can give you is that you must provide value.

Provide value

No one is going to send you on a free trip because *you* want to go. Travel blogging is a business and companies need to know what you are going to offer them.

When you are reaching out to a brand, you need to be thinking “how can I provide as much value for this company as possible?”

“Hi, I would love to come stay at your hotel because it looks sooo beautiful” isn’t going to cut it.

Give them a detailed outline of what exactly you can provide whether it’s XX amount of posts for your XX amount of followers or high quality images to be used on their social media and website. Outline a detailed plan. Will you include a Youtube video? How many people read your blog each month? How many Pinterest pins will you make advertising the blog post about their company? The more ways you can provide value to them, the more likely they are to say yes!

Build an audience

There are ways to travel for free if you don’t have or want a big social media following. Check out my ultimate guide to travel jobs around the world.

But if you’re a travel blogger hoping to score free trips, you do need an authentic following. (Brands can see if you’ve bought followers!) I started getting small sponsored things around 5,000 followers. But I didn’t land anything major until I hit 10,000 followers on Instagram. Pay attention to what posts do well and then create more content like that!

Gaining followers on Instagram nowadays is HARD. The travel blogging market is oversaturated and there are already thousands of existing accounts and blogs. The best way you’ll gain a following is to post high quality images so focus on photography!

You’ll also need to be networking and meeting people in person. Be active on the app and strive to provide value for the people following you. Never forget that they are following your account for their own reasons, it’s not really about you. So what can you provide them with so they stick around? Keep giving value.

Think of other skills you can offer if your audience is small

You need an audience if travel blogging is your goal. However, if you are trying to start by earning free trips think about what other skills you can offer!

When I went dog sledding in Sweden, I only had about 5k followers. But I was able to help them set up their Pinterest account, web site and provide photos for them to use on social media.

Is there a hostel you want to stay at that doesn’t have an Instagram yet? Offer to create it for them during your stay and post on it daily through the duration of your visit.

Are you a good writer? You could guest blog for a company in exchange for stay? Companies may need help running their social media, setting up their Pinterest or branching out into other platforms like Tiktok.

Check Workaway for positions that offer free stays for people who can help with web design, social media, photography etc.

Show proof of successful past collaborations

This is the single best thing you can do to secure sponsored trips. Once you have one successful sponsored trip, you need to be tracking your insights. How many impressions did the post get? How many times was the blog post reshared? Are you affiliate for the company? If so, how much money did you earn the brand?

There is no way around it, brands want to talk facts and figures. They want actual proof that you will be able to provide a return on their investment.

Track affiliate links

I did a partnership with TourRadar and they made me an affiliate. This means I get a small percent when people book a trip through my site at no additional cost to the buyer. Since partnering with TourRadar, I have sold nearly $20,000 in trips through my site for them. I am able to take a screenshot of this to provide proof for future brands that partnering with me is profitable. This has opened a lot of doors for me with other collaborations.

Pitch companies until you get a yes

When you’re small and just starting out, you will need to be reaching out to companies. Some will ignore you. Some will say no. Keep pitching and reaching out!

Let me be clear: I’m not saying to pester or annoy companies but if you think you can realistically offer value to the company it’s worth a try! Start small (like a hostel or a day tour) and work your way up to a multiple day trip.

Big hotels get pitched by hundreds of “influencers” wanting free things. Most people get ignored. Try pitching brands from the angle of how you can help THEM.

Pitch in the off season

Pitching busy or popular places in the off season will greatly increase your chances. If you’re a small time blogger and you’re trying to get a sponsored stay at a hotel in the Florida Keys during March, they aren’t going to honor your request when there are thousands of spring breakers coming to pay full price for their rooms. While it’s great to be passionate and dedicated, don’t have unrealistic expectations about what a brand should give you when you’re starting out.

Do you think that if they invest you in, they will be able to recoup the cost of your trip AND MORE? If the answer is yes, then go ahead and pitch them.

Trying to pitch some place like Venice or Tulum? These destinations are totally oversaturated with bloggers trying to get free stays. The hotels have actual applications you fill out ot help weed out the thousands of requests they get. Start in lesser explored destinations and at lower price points.

You need a media kit

Your media kit is like a resume for a blogger. You can show stats about past partnerships with brands, how many followers you have, your engagement rate and more!

Screenshots of successful collabs are your best friend! After I partnered with Voyager Campervans, I followed up a few months later to check if any bookings had be made with my promo code “emilyrose40” which gives first time travelers $40 off. And sure enough, I had sold several thousand dollars worth with my booking code!

There is no such thing as a free trip, be prepared to work for it!

Honestly, we shouldn’t even be referring to sponsored trips as “free”. It’s more of a work exchange. You are providing skills and expertise in areas of social media, brand development, photography etc. It will probably take you many hours to write your blog posts, edit the photos, share the posts, reply to all the DMs and comments online about your trip… there is simply no way around it.

Trips are never free. But if you are passionate about the work and genuinely enjoy doing it, then it will be a job you love! (*most of the time … because even travel blogging which seems ultra-glamorous has its downsides)

If the company won’t give you a free trip, try getting a sponsored stay by bringing others

There are a lot of travel companies that will provide a free trip for the person who organizes the group and gets them to go.

If you’re in college and want a free spring break trip, you can get people to sign up for companies like GoBlue or STS Travel. If enough people sign up, your trip is free! Other companies like Stoke Travel offer similar things.

I wanted to go dog sledding in Minnesota. But instead of just pitching them a single trip, I decided to provide a lot of value by pitching them a collaboration to bring a group with me. Not only will I travel free but I’m providing a massive amount of sales to a wonderful local company. (Nearly $40,000 by the time I sold out 3 weekends!!!)

Only accept trips you would be willing to pay full price for and align with your audience

This is where things get tricky. I would never promote a trip I wouldn’t feel comfortable paying full price for myself.

In fact, I once accepted a sponsored tour in Paris and truthfully, the tour was terrible. I could not recommend it to my readers and feel good about it.

Even as you begin to accept sponsored or free trips, your focus must always be on your audience and giving them authentic, genuine reviews for the trips you take. Always let them know when it’s a sponsored trip and stay honest. If I do a trip that is really poorly done, I won’t write a review dragging the company through the mud but I will discuss my reasoning why with the company and respectfully decline to post about it.

Under promise and over deliver

In a perfect world, a single collab with a brand turns into a longstanding partnership. Do a really good job and it will guarantee you future work. Brands also reach out and talk with one another. I had a really expensive hotel in Stillwater book me for a sponsored trip because they checked with past companies I had collaborated with and they all gave me a glowing review!

Tell the brand you’ll have the post up in a week and do it in 5 days instead. Say you’ll post two times on Instagram and then give them a third for free. End the contract with the brand feeling happy and content with the investment they’ve made. It’s a win/win situation if it goes well for everyone! You get more sponsored trips and they get more guests!

Travel blogging isn’t easy

It may seem like endless sunsets and drinks by the pool but traveling while blogging and traveling for fun are two totally different things. There is legitimate work to do. You may feel like sleeping in on a sponsored trip but the best lighting is at sunrise and you promised X amount of pictures in your contract. So set that alarm and get to work!

You will be hustling, rushing around and spending a lot of time in front of your laptop. That is the side of travel blogging you don’t actually see online.

How I Got Paid For 2 Years Of Non-Stop Travel:
A Complete List Of Every Travel Job I Have Worked

For the first 26 years of my life, I barely traveled anywhere. My passport sat essentially empty. And on top of that, I had barely explored my own country.

Yet when I was a young girl, traveling had always been a dream of mine. So what happened?

When I took an honest look at my life and my choices, I realized I hadn’t prioritized my dream. I never made an actionable plan to travel. I spent my money elsewhere. Essentially, I dreamed about it without pursuing it.

But in 2018, I decided that I wouldn’t let another year go by without traveling. I was finally going to see the world.

But when I looked at the year ahead, I had no idea how to fund an epic around-the-world trip. I knew I wanted to travel for at least a year even though I had very little money saved up to cover plane tickets, accommodation, train rides and excursions.

My Solution: Get Paid To Travel!

If I didn’t have the money for an extended trip, I decided I would find another way. I would get paid to travel!

I began researching travel jobs & volunteer positions around the world. Since I wanted to see as much as possible in my first year, I wasn’t interested in travel jobs that required a long commitment.

So I ruled out year-long positions teaching English abroad. Even though that’s a wonderful option for many people, I had itchy feet and knew I would want to explore a great many new places in the year to come instead of just one place!

So I began looking for short-term freelance travel jobs or volunteer positions. This would greatly reduce my costs, allow me to have incredible experiences with locals and still see a variety of countries.

In addition, I was interested in slow travel. I didn’t only want to only sight-see briefly in each country. By volunteering for a few weeks, I would get to immerse myself in my new surroundings.

The first position I landed was with Stoke Travel.

Guide with Stoke Travel For Hogmanay–
The New Year’s Eve Festival in Scotland

This was an excellent introduction to the world of travel jobs. I was assigned to guide a party train on New Year’s Eve from London to Scotland for the annual festival Hogmanay.

So I booked my flight to London using points from a credit card sign up bonus and prepared to go abroad. It was my first time in Europe, my first international trip (aside from one family trip to Mexico) and my first ever solo trip. I was so nervous/excited I could hardly stand it.

I explored London for the week leading up to the festival and couchsurfed to save money on accommodation. And on New Years Eve, I reported for duty to help serve breakfast and welcome the guests. A few days prior, I had been trained on how the day would go.

My job at Hogmanay: Welcome the guests, help get all 300+ guests checked in, serve breakfast and drinks then lead everyone to the train. Once on the train, collect the necessary information, pass out welcome drinks and assist in letting the party rage!

By the time we arrived in Scotland, everyone had already had a sufficient amount to drink for the festival. It was a wild, unforgettable New Years Eve!

And if you can believe it, I didn’t take a single photo of the experience. My first travel job, I just soaked in the experience & loved every second of it!

English Speaking Volunteer with Diverbo

After my time in London and Scotland, I boarded a cheap flight to Frankfurt with little more than my backpack.

Again, I couchsurfed for two nights in Germany to explore before reporting for the first day to volunteer with the program Diverbo.

This program provides free accommodation at a resort, 3 delicious meals a day & free drinks at each meal in exchange for speaking English all day with foreigners eager to improve their conversational English. I absolutely loved my time in Germany at Diverbo.

Spring Break Host with STS Travel
in Cancun, Mexico

This was my first travel job where all flights, accommodation and food were included.

And on top of that, it was a paid position! I only made $200 a week in cash stipend but my round trip flight to Mexico was covered. And I lived at the Grand Oasis, an all inclusive resort, for a full month. (Meaning all alcohol and food was 100% free!)

In addition, the company sent me on my first scuba diving excursion totally for free!

But essentially, I welcomed the spring breakers as they arrived, was in charge of wristbands, assisting at major events and leading nightly trips to party in downtown Cancun.

I lived at a resort for a month in paradise and left with $800 in my pocket still in shock that I could get paid to travel!

Festival Crew at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany

While this is a volunteer position and not paid, I wouldn’t have traded this experience for the world!

Yes, we were camping in Germany for nearly 6 weeks.

Yes, we worked some very long unpaid days setting up the festival.

But working with Stoke Travel as part of their festival crew during Oktoberfest, introduced me to my new group of travel friends.

My best friends back home could never be replaced but until this experience I didn’t have any friends who were able to go traveling for weeks on end with me!

While just working festival crew isn’t paid, there are some other perks:

• Fun loving, party atmosphere of workers from around the world
• Commission sales when people book with your promo code
• Free unlimited beer, wine and sangria
• Accommodation (which is a tent at this festival!)
• A trip to Greece at the end of the season that is half paid for by the company

Things to note: You can make good money selling trips through Stoke Travel if people book with your code. There are also paid staff positions if you accept a year-round job. While I chose to work a short term, volunteer position it is possible to actually get paid to travel with this company!

Assisted With Looking After Sled Dogs and Photographing Our Experience
in Ottsjo, Sweden

The next travel job I would work involved helping out at the kennels for Wild Spirit Sled Dogs and assisting the company by taking photos for their social media.

While we were only visiting for a few days to see our friend Adrian and to help out in exchange for accommodation, he was actually working as a paid full-time employee with the dogs.

Working or volunteering with a dog sledding company is a great travel job you can find all over the world in places like Iceland, Sweden, Canada and Alaska.

Pub Crawl Guide in Krakow, Poland

I loved every minute of this job. The housing we were provided with wasn’t great but we were having too much fun to care. It honestly only added to the fun.

Not only was I living just a few blocks from the main square in Krakow but I was there with my friend Morgan who I had met during Oktoberfest. We would go on to travel together non-stop for 2 years and still do today!

During the day we explored Krakow by going on walking tours, taking day trips to nearby cities and eating more than our fair share of pierogi.

And at night, we worked on the pub crawl guiding travelers from around the world through Krakow’s legendary network of bars and nightclubs.

Spring Break Host with STS Travel in
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

In 2019, I returned to work with STS Travel in Mexico. But this time, I was being sent to Cabo San Lucas instead of Cancun and I recieved a pay raise as a returning employee.

I was thrilled to explore the oppossite side of Mexico.

Again, I lived at an all inclusive resort and managed the guests who booked spring break packages. We attended concerts, parties and even got sent on an ATV excursion.

Leading Road Trips Across America with
Topdeck Travel

Spring 2019 brought a big change! I flew back to the USA from Poland for a final interview with Topdeck Travel. I landed the job and began a month long training process on the road to guide road trips.

Over the course of the next year, I would go on many road trips ranging from 10 days to a month long all over the USA.

From hiking in Yosemite National Park to listening to jazz on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, it was one adventure after another.

Favorite Topdeck adventures included:

All my flights, hotel rooms, meals and excursions were covered. On top of that, I received an hourly wage, health insurance and daily stipend.

This job had insane perks. But it was also a TON of work. I was the only one in charge of groups of 30-50 people. While sometimes it felt like vacation, it also frequently meant running around like crazy making reservations, dealing with crazy issues that come up on the road, taking care of drunk guests etc. I wasn’t just getting paid to travel. I was paid to be a tour guide, counselor, therapist, friend, DJ on the bus, entertainer and just about everything else to the guests!

Travel Blogging On My Personal Site

Travel blogging is not easy money. There is a lot of work upfront before you ever see a dime. And usually when you start making money, it’s still just pennies compared to the hours you have devoted to your blog.

So you’ve got to make sure you go into travel blogging because you love it and want to share your passion not because you’re looking for a get rich quick scheme.

That being said, I do make money through my site from various affiliates. People may click and purchase a product I recommend or book a trip through my site (at no additional cost to them) and in return, I make a small commission off each purchase.

In addition to affiliate links, I may be offered free or sponsored travel in exchange for sharing my honest opinion about it on my blog.

When I was first starting out as a blogger, some of my first “free” trips included:

I was careful to never accept anything I wouldn’t have already been using or paid full price for myself. And all of my reviews were my own honest thoughts.

(I think it helps to be transparent and honest about which trips I’m paying for myself and which ones are hosting me!)

Once I arrived back in Minnesota during the coronavirus pandemic, I was able to take time and grow my blog further which resulted in a number of local partnerships with truly incredible companies.

After working with Stoke Travel in Scotland and Germany, I knew a lot of the company members so I was able to stay in Barcelona for free and help out at the spring and summer boat parties.

All we had to do was set up for the party and hand out drinks while the guests were onboard! This left plenty of time for exploring Spain with my friends.

Once the coronavirus pandemic broke out, I was staying at home and putting a pause on all my travels. Fortunately, I was still able to work through my travel blog.

I wrote both for my own site and as a paid guest blogger for Alyssa Ramos of My Life’s A Travel Movie.

You might have seen this company’s viral videos on Youtube of miraculous animal rescues. They are quite popular on social media. But as a volunteer, you can help out at the center while the animals recover.

Things to note: Even if you can afford to pay your entire way for a gap year, you might find you love giving back and volunteering and building a connection with a destination that goes deeper than fly-by sightseeing.

Travel Blogging: WordPress Plugins To Increase Traffic To Your Site

If you follow and read my blog, you’ll know I talk a lot about travel jobs around the world and how YOU can get paid to travel. I give that information freely and genuinely love receiving all the messages I get about wonderful experiences people have had abroad with tips or suggestions from my site. But until now, I haven’t shared anything on my site about travel blogging itself as a job.

Recently, I shared some of my favorite plugins on my Instagram to increase traffic to your travel blog and received a lot of positive response so I wanted to expand and elaborate further through a full blog post. I hope you find this helpful

My Top 5 WordPress Plugins To Increase Traffic To Your Blog

1. Yoast SEO

Yoast SEO is an absolute must for WordPress bloggers. This is how you will rank higher on Google. It will give you an easy to follow checklist showing how SEO friendly your article is or isn’t.

This analysis will tell you exactly what to fix. You might be missing outbound links or internal links. Or maybe you haven’t included your keyword or phrase enough times. Maybe your blog post isn’t the minimum 300 words and you need to write more.

Whatever it is, Yoast SEO will tell you exactly what to fix with it’s easy to use analysis.

2. Smash Balloon – Instagram Feed

This WordPress plugin is great for obvious reasons. If someone finds your blog through Google or Pinterest and clicks away without saving your post, they might not come across your content again. Ideally, you want to convert them into a reader who sticks around for more than just one blog post. If they connect with you on Instagram, you’ll be able to share blog updates on your social media and hopefully keep them coming back in the future

There are a number of plugins that will display your Instagram account but I like the plugin Smash Balloon because it’s free and very easy to use. You can decide how many photos to show from your account. Then simply copy and paste the generated code wherever you’d like to display it on your site.

If you click the feed below, you’ll see it’s interactive and takes you right to my Instagram page. This makes it very easy for readers to follow you!

3. Author Bio Box

Similar to Instagram Feed, this WordPress plugin will help connect first time readers to the name and the story behind the blog. If someone randomly searches “how to do Oktoberfest on a budget” on Google and comes across my site, they won’t have any idea who is writing the article.

It’s best if you can show your readers the face behind the screen so they can connect with you personally.

Seeing who you are in the author box can lead them to finding out more about your story. So now, at the bottom of each post, my author bio box is always displayed.

4. Social Warfare

Social Warfare is a game changer for a WordPress blog. As you can see in the image from my site below, there are three easy tabs that pop up on my site- the Facebook icon, the Pinterest icon and the Twitter icon! With just a quick click, readers can share you posts to their social media.

This does wonders for your traffic and page views. It also gives your site credibility and helps it rank higher if Google sees it’s been shared a lot online.

Lots of social shares= a healthy, high ranking site!

5. Interactive Geo Maps PRO

If you’re a travel blogger using WordPress, you will most likely want to invest in an interactive map at some point. The previous plugins I listed are all free. But for a good map, you will need to pay a little.

I happened to buy mine when Interactive Geo Maps PRO was having a sale so it was a very minimal expense.

I’ve spent the last two years working around the world. From leading road trips across North America to working as a spring break host in Mexico or a pub crawl guide in Poland, I’ve lived, travelled, volunteered and worked in a lot of countries.

When people come across my blog or my Instagram, the first thing they ask me is “how do you afford to travel so much?”

When I explain that I work travel jobs or volunteer in exchange for room and board, people want know how I find these jobs or opportunities.

Well, here is how I do it!

Google search phrases like “vacation host” or “tour guide jobs”

Just start googling. It’s a great first place to start and find positions that are currently open. It will lead you down differents paths to different travel companies and different job options.

But what do you google? Well I’m glad you asked.

Try searching any of the following phrases:

Google search travel companies and see what positions they typically hire

If you are interested in working in the travel industry, it’s smart to get familiar with some of the big name companies out there.

Any company that offers trips needs people onsite making sure the vacation runs smoothly for their guests. And that’s where the whole “getting paid to travel” comes into play!

Any festival or travel event will need extra workers!

Think about it- thousands of college students go on spring break each year and party in beautiful, tropical destinations. That means that travel companies exist and help facilitate this huge annual event. Which means they will need staff in these destinations to ensure things run smoothly. Perfect! Because that’s how you get a job living at a resort in Mexico for a month– swimming, going on sunset cruises and to nightclubs!

Another great example of this is Oktoberfest in Germany. With millions of people pouring into Munich each year, jobs are created onsite with the influx of people. Campsites pop up from a variety of travel companies that look to take workers onsite.

Anytime a large group of people are traveling to a destination, there are jobs created! So be sure to check out popular party towns or islands as well, especially ones like Zante in Greece. These party towns will take walk up employees for bartenders, shot girls.. you name it! And you’ll be living with all the other party-loving workers from around the world, so be ready for a hectic but fun summer.

Networking

Once you work one travel job, you will meet other people who are also working in the travel industry.

From there, just be friendly and outgoing Ask around! Find out what other jobs people have worked then ask if they might recommend you.

While working as a spring break host in Mexico, I was one of the few people who mingled with workers from other spring break companies. By doing this, I was able to network and meet other people interested in working around the world.

One of the workers from a different company, recommended me to work for Krawl Through Krakow, a pub crawl job in Poland.

Later that year, I spent two months living in Poland working the pub crawl with my best friend and living in the free provided accommodation. We loved every minute of it!

Cool Works Jobs

Cool Works is another excellent resource for finding seasonal work in epic destinations. This site specializes in paid seasonal jobs at national parks.

Think you might want to spend a season in Alaska or work in the mountains in Montana? Cool Works can help you. Just browse their available jobs.

VagaJobs

VagaJobs is another EXCELLENT resource. You’ll be able to search for fun seasonal positions in amazing destinations. You can easily filter it out by specific national parks or types of jobs. Whether you want to spend a season working at a summer camp in the mountains or as a zip line guide in Alaska, there are countless amazing opportunities.

The site lets you filter and search for jobs that provide housing and/or meals.

And you can refine your search based on which season you’re available and how much job experience you have. There is a “no experience” option so it’s a good way to find jobs that will teach you new skills!

Hostel Jobs

At any given time, the website Hostel Jobs will have over 2,000 jobs open that you can apply for immediately. Just create a worker profile (it’s free!) and start applying. You can work and live in hostels as you travel across the world.

This site is a FANTASTIC resource for jobs, travel scholarships, volunteer and study abroad programs.

Similar to Go Abroad, this site is a wonderful resource with over 17,000+ programs for you to discover!

They even offer internships abroad. This website is packed with reviews (over 46,000!) so you can get an honest idea of what each experience is going be like for you.

Working Holiday Visas

If you’re a citizen in the United States, there are 6 countries where you are eligible for a working visa– Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada, and South Korea.

That means as long as you fit the requirements (usually under the age of 30) you are eligible to legally work in that country and can apply for a wide selection of jobs.

Look into what working holiday visas your home country is able to offer it’s citizens! It varies by country.

Girls Gone Working

This site is an excellent resource for women looking to find travel jobs. The website is full of guest blog posts by different women who have worked around the world. The contributing ladies write articles which clearly spell out the requirements for each job, where to apply and what you can expect once you are living and working abroad.

Jobs on a superyacht

Another way to make good money while being paid to travel is by working in the superyacht industry.

This is different from cruise ship work because a superyacht is privately owned by a someone very rich. It could be a entrepreneur, celebrity etc.

Best of all, the yachting industry pays well and you have virtually no expenses while living onboard the ship. So it’s a great way to save a lot of money or pay off debt in a short amount of time.

Plus the work is seasonal which allows you to do 3-6 months of work at a time then go and travel on your own with some of that money you just saved up!

Teach English Remotely From Anywhere In The World

Check out programs like VIP Kid that let you teach English to Chinese children remotely. You could travel and live anywhere in the world while teaching lessons so long as you have wifi!

Another great option is Palfish. You can teach English lessons to kids right off your smartphone. You have zero prep work for the lessons because you follow simple, easy-to-use lesson plans.

HOW TO LAND A TRAVEL JOB

So you found the job you want to apply for… but now what? Depending on the job, you may need to send in a cover letter and resume. It’s also common for travel companies to ask for your social media as well.

If you have a travel blog you can include that on your resume. I also attached some smiley, travel photos to given them a more clear idea of my personality and to put a face with the resume!

Travel Resume- Show Your Personality and Stand Out In A Fun, Positive Way!

I had to really fluff my resume for my first travel job application. So I highlighted my experience in theater because it showed that I was outgoing, comfortable talking to large groups and expressive. I talked up my experience working retail part time in college because it showed I had good customer service skills- something any travel company would want!

Travel jobs often put you in direct contact with guests who book trips or are staying at a property. Companies want to know they are hiring someone who will keep a positive, professional face with guests.

Sometimes showing that you have a friendly, positive personality is more important than previous work experience.

So what did I put on my travel resume?

“Outgoing, hard-working customer service worker with a fun-loving personality, theatre arts background and a passion for travel! Great interpersonal skills, excels at multitasking and putting a positive spin on everything. Always ready for an adventure or an exciting trip abroad, the perfect trip leader or tour promoter!“

Core Qualifications

• Exceptional organizational skills
• Creative problem solver
• Excels in communication and task management
• Strong sales background-years of experience meeting sales goals
• Over 7 years of charming and happily assisting patrons in customer service
• Social butterfly and the life of every party!

By highlighting that I was outgoing, a social butterfly and enthusiastic but still responsible, I was able to show travel companies I had personality and the type of positive attitude that would be ideal for dealing with guests on vacation.

People pay their travel companies A LOT of money. They don’t want to be dealing with grouchy, unkind customer service people while on the trip of a lifetime. If you’re going to lead a tour or host spring break, your attitude can really make or break a person’s whole trip.

And how they perceive you is how they will perceive that travel company. So often, companies are looking for the right type of person over tons of experience!

You won’t get accepted for them all, keep applying!

When I was first starting out, I was applying for travel jobs I knew were “out of my league.” And while I didn’t get every job, I landed several of the ones I considered to be way above my experience. Never overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself.

Keep applying. Like I said, most companies would rather train the right person even if they have less experience. You’re not applying for an office job.

It’s your strong interpersonal skills that will really set you apart here!

Start as a volunteer to gain experience

If you’re unable to find a paid travel job like tour leading right away, be sure to consider volunteering in exchange for room and board.

After all, if you aren’t paying for accommodation- it’s much easier to keep your costs low while traveling extensively.

The most popular site for travel volunteer gigs, Workaway has thousands of listings in countries all over the world. Not only is there huge variety on where you can volunteer and live for free but the types of jobs vary immensely.

If you’re handy with tools, you might be fixing up a hostel. Maybe you like animals so you help out on a ranch.

If hiking and outdoor adventures are more your style, you might help lead excursions for an adventure hostel.

Maybe you’d like to look after children in France and do a homestay to improve your French language skills as well? The options are endless!

Similar to Workaway, WWOOF hosts provide volunteers with food, accommodation and the opportunity to learn about organic farming. In exchange, volunteers give hands-on help around the property while learning new skills and a sustainable way of living.

Hosts can be found in Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Middle East and Oceania.

Volunteer Your English Skills with Diverbo, Speak or Angloville

These programs are an awesome way to volunteer for a short stay in a country! If you’re a native English speaker, you can stay at a resort abroad and participate in an English-immersion program.

Your accommodation and meals will be covered as you chat with non-native speakers looking to improve their English.

If you’re not an extrovert and a social butterfly, I don’t recommend applying. You will spend all day talking and getting to know people!

However if you do love meeting new people, it can be a really fun and rewarding experience. I volunteered in Germany on my first trip to Europe and am still friends today with the people I met at the program!

What’s the travel job? Very similar to Topdeck, you will be guiding road trips solo with a group of 18-30 somethings!

Pros: Get paid to go on road trips, flights covered, hotels covered, some food included, get to go on excursions for free, discounted Contiki trips in other countries!

Cons: You can only work trips in the countries you have a passport! Therefore I am only eligible to guide in the USA. If you have a European passport, you are able to guide an even wider variety of trips! It can be lonely being on the road without other staff. Of course you make friends with the guests. But as the trip leader, there is always a slight barrier since you are in charge. The bus drivers are great but might not be your age or interested in going out.

Paid Travel Job: Spring Break Staff

If you’ve been following my Instagram stories for the last month, you’ve seen me swimming with whale sharks, riding ATV’s up a mountain at sunset, partying at the best nightclubs in Cabo, feeding wild sea lions and spending a lot of evenings on a boat at sunset. Every day has been a new adventure in paradise.

I was able to live at both the RIU Palace and RIU Sante Fe, which are huge all inclusive- luxury resorts right on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. And the year before, I lived by the beach in Cancun, Mexico at the Grand Oasis for a month. Sun bathing, boating and magnificent sunsets are all apart of my daily life in Mexico as a spring break staff member.

All of these incredible experiences have been available to me because I work as a on-site destination rep for a spring break company each March.

Now most people don’t even know that a job like this exists. People struggle to wrap their heads around the fact that I’m paid to stay at an all inclusive resort. It seems too good to be true- buffets full of fresh seafood, plenty of swim up bars and the beach just a few steps away.

Every day I would get asked, “This is your job?! How do I find a job like this?!” Well let me break it down for you

What is a spring break/destination rep?

Staff who provide on-site support for the guests that book with the travel company.

Many companies exist that sell package trips to guests. During the spring break season especially, students look to buy packaged deals from a company that will provide them with their flight, hotel, party packages, excursions and on-site support all in one.

So these companies need friendly, out going staff to be on-site to welcome the travelers when they arrive. And to manage the operations in each destination.

Meaning you can spend a month living in a beautiful spring break destination for free.

But it’s not entirely vacation.

I know it seems from my pictures and videos that we ONLY have fun and there’s no real responsibility. And while I do think it’s one of the best jobs in the world, there is actual work to be done while working as spring break staff.

Some of your responsibilities may include:

Assisting with check in’s

Sometimes there are massive groups of students checking in all at once. It can get really hectic. You’ll be expected to greet them in the lobby and give them the run down of the week including social events, how to get around etc.

“Office hours”

Each company handles this differently but typically you’re expected to make yourself available for the guests to find you and ask any questions. This might mean sitting in the lobby from 11-2pm or if the company has a staff roof- you may be expected to hang out there in case the guests need anything.

Finding leads

Many of the companies sell trips by finding school leaders who promote the trips at their school. If that student can get 10-15 of their friends to sign up and go- that student gets to go for FREE. (It’s a really great deal actually!) And on site reps are encouraged to find these outgoing students who would be interested in arranging a trip the following year.

Hand out tickets for events

You may have to meet with guests at check in or throughout the week to pass out their tickets for events- it depends on the company!

Attend events

Now this is by far the best part of the job! The guests typically go out to clubs, concerts, booze cruises, beach parties… you name it! And they will need the staff there as well. Which means YOU get to go to all the same fun things. Some companies are more strict about reps mingling with guests while others companies want their reps there doing ALL the same stuff. The company I worked for allowed us to do any events the guests had access to (plus a few more, whoohoo!!) So we frequently saw big name DJ’s or went on sunset cruises.

Help sell party packages

While the position is not a sales position, different companies may want you to chat up their excursions or events to the guests. This is easy since you have been to most events you’re trying to promote. Just pull out your phone and show the students all the fantastic pictures from the last island cruise and they will be dying to sign up if they haven’t already

Answer questions

When you have your staff shirt on, people will come to you with all sorts of questions. Mostly they will want to know where the nearest ATM is, how to get downtown, what the party schedule is for the week etc. It’s your responsibility to be knowledgeable about what’s going on.

Requirements

• Valid passport
• Outgoing and comfortable talking to strangers
• Friendly, welcoming and fun!
• Be able to travel to any spring break destination for the month of March
• Excellent customer service skills
• Strong work ethic for long days to ensure guests have an unforgettable trip
• Not required but it’s a bonus if you can speak Spanish

Pros Of Working As Spring Break Staff

*this may vary by spring break company

• One month at an all inclusive resort – how incredible is that?!
• Free round trip flight to one of the world’s most beautiful spring break destinations
• Free access to boat rides, concerts, DJ, night clubs,
• Weekly cash stipend
• Possible access to free or discounted excursions (My first year they sent me scuba diving for free, my second year I was taken on a sunset ATV excursion!)
• Depending on the destination, free drinks in the nightclubs or bottle service
• Warm, sunny weather- you’re living in paradise!
• New friends and new experiences – you’ll be rooming with your coworkers at the resort! Depending on the size of the company and destination you might have a lot of coworkers or only a few.

Cons Of Working As Spring Break Staff

Long days.

Some mornings you will have early check ins and events during the day. Then you’ll be expected to go on a bar crawl or attend a big concert in the evening. And a lot of nights you come back to the resort late! Personally, I had no problem with the long days because I loved everything we were doing. But it can be easy to wear yourself out quickly.

Stressful situations.

Things will go wrong, guests will get upset. Guests have injured themselves jumping in a pool while drunk at 2am. Or the tickets were miscounted and the venue isn’t allowing anymore of your guests inside. Things definitely come up and you have to be ready to deal with them responsibly!

Dealing with drunk people.

Like really, really drunk people. A lot of them. Spring break is wild everywhere (but especially in Mexico!!) and undoubtedly your guests will get into trouble. I’ve had guests get lost, lose all their money at a strip club, get robbed, wind up overnight in a Mexican jail, lose their passports, miss their flights home or get angry with the company because they misunderstood something. Situations get messy when you’re dealing with drunk guests. They will forget you told them what time to arrive for the sunset cruise then accidentally miss it and expect a refund.

Being available 24/7.

While it wasn’t a requirement for me to share my contact details with guests, I frequently did. That way, it was much easier for them to get in touch with me if there was a problem. But that does mean the occasional “I need help!” at 4am text waking you up. But I was always more than happy to help out. If you genuinely love traveling and helping people, this part of the job is no issue.

Stipend pay.

You can expect to make around $200-$250 a week your first year. Now that isn’t a lot of money so if you have student loans or rent to pay back home it can be more challenging. However if you’re not paying rent or if you a can find a sublease for the month, you can pocket most of that money since all your expenses are covered.

Lots of goodbyes.

You’d be surprised how close you get to some of the guests, local workers and staff! With new guests cycling out every 4 days to a week, you meet (and say goodbye!) to lots of new friends.

Overall, an incredible opportunity!

All that being said, the majority of the time- the guests are fun, lively and so excited to be there! The positives definitely out weigh the negatives but you need to be prepared.

Tips for Applying

These companies are looking for high energy leaders who can multi task and keep organized! The spring break season is surprisingly hectic so you need to show them you are both fun and responsible. Some of the websites have applications right online, others you will have to email yourself.

Every company I reached out to got back to me right away because my initial email was full of personality, confidence and I had a solid resume attached. I had my pick of where I wanted to work. You can do the same if you’re a good fit for the job and show them that.

Make your resume POP! You aren’t applying for an office job so build yourself a resume that both highlights your leadership and management skills but also shows that you are “the life of the party” or “make friends with everyone”. I cracked jokes in my first email, had a colorful resume and attached a picture of me at the pool having a drink. Make yourself memorable! If you truthfully aren’t the chatty, outgoing type- this job may not be a good fit for you anyway. There are plenty of other travel jobs out there!

Get a recommendation. Truthfully a lot of people get these jobs because someone they know worked a spring break season in the past and recommended them. But if you’re like me and didn’t know any employees- then just start apply and emailing!

Working As A Pub Crawl Guide in Poland

First of all, let’s talk about how amazing it is that you can be paid to live in another country while clubbing and socializing with like-minded travelers. The fact that jobs like this even exist make it exceedingly more difficult for me to ever think about heading back into a 9 to 5 structured work week.

Now with any travel job or pub crawl gig, you aren’t going to make it rich. But you should be able to make enough to offset most of your costs! You will be paid based on how many people are on the pub crawl divided by the number of staff working.

You will be paid cash in the Polish currency (złoty) each week.

In the dead of winter we had a few really small nights. I didn’t make a ton of money those shifts but I got to know the guests better and we had a BLAST! Other nights, we would have tour groups or bachelorette/bachelor parties book on and we’d have nearly 200 people.

In the summer, the pub crawl is even more popular. If you work busy weekend shifts, you can make decent money considering you aren’t paying any bills. Which brings me to my next point….

2. Housing Provided

Even more valuable than the money you’ll make on shift, is the fact that you are provided with free accommodation! Which also means you’re not stuck paying electrical bills, WiFi or water. You have no bills and can live free of charge at what is lovingly referred to as “the den.”

In the winter, my best friend and I had an entire room to ourselves. Just one other guy lived in the second bedroom for most of my time there. But during the summer, expect a full house!

While it isn’t the nicest accommodation I’ve had during a travel job, it certainly was FUN. We’d push the bunk beds together and make forts, cook “family dinners”, and have movie nights. Don’t expect much privacy or alone time. It’s kind of like living in a hostel. 

Generally it wasn’t super tidy, given that everyone was usually too busy partying and having fun to keep it in great shape. But when I lived there, we tried to spiff it up and get it looking nice! We hung lights and wall decorations in an attempt to make it feel more like a home for us

3. Working A Job You Love

No boring days at the office. No crappy boss. And a job you genuinely look forward to every shift.

Your responsibilities will include

• Hostel Runs/Promotional Shifts- Chatting with potential guest and dropping off flyers at the local hostels
• Meeting at the town square statue by 8:45pm with the pub crawl sign to greet guests
• Taking guests to two bars and two nightclubs
• Helping usher lingering guests from one bar to the next
• Passing out welcome shots at each new location
• Chatting, socializing and making sure everyone is having a fantastic time!

4. Amazing coworkers

The best part of the job by far, is the people you meet.

While I was working there, we had staff from Wales, Turkey, Bahamas, America, UK and more! Most of the staff lives with you in the housing or nearby so everyone gets extremely close. It’s a little like living in a college dorm or apartment.

We’d walk to our shift together every night (usually grab late night food after the pub crawl) and walk home together. There is a really strong sense of friendship and community. And never a dull moment among the coworkers! We were constantly going on mini trips, out for dinner, gathering for house parties or exploring Krakow together. If you want to work a travel job and ensure you’ll make friends from all over the world- definitely apply with Krawl Through Krakow.

5. Unlimited free drinks for employees

If you enjoy going out, this is a job for you.

And yes, you can drink while you’re working.

You can also join the pub crawl for free any of your nights off.

It’s all about encouraging a fun environment and making sure the guests are having a blast. If I saw people sitting alone or too timid to join the group, I would go up and ask them to join me for a shot or a game of beer pong and get the party started.

As long as you don’t act like a complete idiot, having fun and drinking on the job is part of the perks! Pub crawl guides should be social, outgoing and throwing a few back with the guests

6. Live in an amazing city

Personally, I adore Krakow. With so much to do, fantastic street food and a wild nightlife scene- there’s never a dull moment!

You can tour Schindler’s factory, the salt mines or wander through old town.

It’s a clean, charming city that hasn’t experienced an explosion of tourists like other European cities.

Even though, I was living there during the winter- I still found it fantastic despite the cold!

7. Plenty of time off

Krawl Through Krakow only requires you to work 3 shifts a week. So you will have plenty of time to explore Krakow and beyond! While you can certainly sign up to take more shifts (I often did!) – I also chose to take those four days off sometimes for a trip to Auschwitz, tours around Krakow or a mini getaway.

I recommend venturing around Poland and the neighboring countries. Buses and train makes it exceptionally easy to get around.

8. Flexible schedule

Each weekend you’ll be asked to submit your availability for that upcoming week. Since you submit your schedule only a few days in advance, it makes planning trips or events a breeze! It’s really easy to take a weekend off to go to Zakopane.

You can easily request for a few days off if you want to head to Ukraine, Slovakia, etc.

9. Great location to travel to other European countries

With the apps GoEuro or Flixbus, you can book really cheap tickets to just about anywhere!

Prague, Lviv and many other great cities aren’t far away.

My favorite trip: Slovakia

On my final weekend in Poland, we decided to take a trip to the southern mountain town, Zakopane. We stayed at a quaint mountain Airbnb that was just a few miles from the Slovakian border.

In the morning, we decided to walk across the border into Slovakia to go explore! We stopped in a little town called Sucha Hora and bought breakfast at a grocery store before spending the the later part of the day up in the mountains. It was such a lovely, spontaneous trip made easy by the fact I was living and working in Krakow.

10. The opportunity to travel around Poland

Living in Krakow puts you near a lot of other great Polish cities!

You can take a bus to explore nearby towns, even if you work the pub crawl in the evening. Catch an early bus and spend the whole day exploring before your shift that night! Or better yet, request your days off in a row so you can head out of Krakow for a few days.

In the summer you will have to work promo shifts in the afternoon but during the winter we just did hostel runs in the evening to drop off flyers and chat with any potential guests. This left our days free to do with as we pleased!

My Top 3 Trips Around Poland

1. Zakopane

Poland’s beautiful mountain town!

Zakopane is definitely worth the trip. Find an Airbnb and stay the night with your coworkers from Krawl through Krakow!

Be sure to book a horse drawn carriage excursion with food and drinks- otherwise known as Kulig! It’s almost like a Polish hoedown!

2. Auschwitz Concentration Camp

A day trip here is difficult. It is heartbreaking and impossible to fully grasp the level of tragedy that occurred here.

Auschwitz is just a short bus ride away from Krakow. And while it’s uncomfortable, its necessary to see.

3. Warsaw

What was going to be a one day trip to Warsaw, turned into a three day trip with my coworkers!

We took a train to Warsaw to visit the zoo where the true story of The Zookeeper’s Wife took place then we somehow wound up spending the next two days in Warsaw.

Together we explored the old town square, listened to street musicians. ate Polish cuisine and visited museums.

You can easily book a train or bus ticket to Warsaw any day of the week!

Overall, a worthwhile and unforgettable experience

Initially, I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend January and February in a cold destination like Poland. But WOW, I am so thankful I did.

I met incredible people, traveled all around Poland and after a tearful airport goodbye, found myself immediately searching for flights back to Krakow later in the year. I would’ve liked to stay longer and would definitely like to return.

How To Find Work With A Dog Sled Company

If you’re interested in finding work with a dog sled company, let me introduce you to Adrian.

He works seasonally at a dog sledding company in Sweden during the winter. As a musher and dog sled tour guide, he helps manage the kennels, take care of the dogs and guide the tours!

During the summer, Adrian travels the world working fun and interesting jobs from Denmark to Estonia to Germany. He has built stages at music festivals, worked in hostels, and hitch hiked all over Europe!

I worked with Adrian at Oktoberfest this year where we quickly became friends. So when he invited us to visit him in Sweden and go dog sledding, we couldn’t turn down this bucket list opportunity.

Wild Spirits Dog Sledding

Adrian works for a company called Wild Spirits located in the tiny Swedish village, Ottsjö. This village is an easy train ride from Stockholm and the perfect place to unplug from the hustle and bustle of a city.

Gorgeous mountain views, fresh snow on the frozen lake and 80+ sled dogs.

So how does a guy from Australia find work for a dog sled company in Sweden?

Adrian found the job listing on Workaway.

Workaway is a site connecting travellers with interesting jobs all over the world. This site includes many listings for dog sledding companies in Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Alaska.

For the first season, he was brought on as a volunteer in exchange for accommodation and food.

But now, as more experienced dog musher, Wild Spirits brought him back for a second season as a paid employee!

Learning on the job

As a volunteer, Adrian has the opportunity to travel, constantly have new experiences and only work jobs he really loves. He is always pursuing worthwhile, meaningful experiences.

While some might find this lifestyle hard to imagine, Adrian (and many others-, myself included!) find it incredibly freeing.

And after experiencing the endless energy of 80+ huskies for several days, I can see why he loves his job so much.

Dog Sledding Iceland in Iceland
