I knew I wanted to ring in the near year at the legendary Hogmanay Festival and I was thrilled when I came across the opportunity to apply for a role with Stoke Travel.

While the position was unpaid, it only required me to help out during the festival and my whole trip was entirely free – drinks included!

7:30 – 9:30am

I woke up early (VERY early) because my hotel in London was pretty far from the meeting point and I had to be there by 7am to assist with check in and breakfast.

We had an awesome crowd, I spent the morning passing out breakfast, answering questions and getting people excited about the trip to come!

I was in charge of one whole train cart. My duties included passing out wristbands, making sure everyone had their bottle of champagne for the train ride and making sure I had everyone’s name and contact info for when departure time arrived the next morning.

After that, I simply had to make sure everyone had a great time!

And if you’re familiar with Stoke Travel, you’ll know it was a wild party indeed. The train ride alone was half the fun!

People were sprinting up and down the aisles, playing games and popping champagne!

Despite a few hiccups beyond the Stoke Travel’s control (the train tracks were closed due to an emergency so our train was delayed getting into Edinburgh) the 24 hour trip was everything I hoped it would be.

Once we arrived in Edinburgh, it was already getting dark. I had originally planned to go see the castle but the party was already well underway! I helped lead my group to the pre-party and made sure everyone got in okay.

By this time, people were already quite drunk and some had lost their wristbands. After some chaotic running around and sorting out the situation, my duties were mostly done.

I made friends with a group on my train cart and spent the rest of the night dancing in Scottish bars, watching the fireworks and roaming the winding streets of Edinburgh all night. It. Was. A. Blast. Everything I hoped and more!

We stayed up the whole night until the train departed in the morning. I checked people in for departure and for the entire ride back to London, people were strewn about the train, sleeping every which way.

Usually when I travel, I take a lot of pictures and videos. But truthfully, since this was my first trip I just enjoyed the experience! I didn’t have a fancy camera at the time and I knew nothing about editing.

How To Find Unique Camping Sites
and The Best Glamping Worldwide

If you’re looking for fun, interesting and unique camping sites- you’ve come to the right place. If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I have been camping and “glamping” around the world for the last two years in epic destinations like the Great Smoky Mountains, the countryside in Spain or at festivals across Europe.

Hipcamp

By now, just about everyone everywhere knows about Airbnb. But have you heard of Hipcamp? It’s a resource similar to Airbnb that allows privately owned properties to be rented out to travelers.

This could mean anything from a basic camping spot in someone’s backyard to large privately owned glamping sites.

Just like with Airbnb, sometimes you’ll meet the owners and sometimes you won’t. It just depends on the site you book. There may be other campers around or you might have the property to yourself! Hipcamp is home to a wide range of properties- even cute cabins and lodges.

I have personally used Hipcamp a number of different times during my travels in my home state of Minnesota and while traveling the Great Smoky Mountains.

The first glamping site we found in Minnesota was exclusively featured on Hipcamp and was one of my favorite summer adventures this year! The property had multiple campsites surrounded by gorgeous trails. We stayed in the stunning safari tent. And for extra fun, try showering in the very cute and charming outdoors shower.

The second Minnesota glamping trip I went on was at the Dancing the Land farm also found on Hipcamp. This stay was an absolute 10/10 experience!

If you’ve fallen in love with the “glamping” (glamorous + camping) craze that has taken the travel industry by storm, you’re not alone! People who want to connect with nature but still have a few comforts (like a bed, ha!) are growing in number.

Of course you already know about Airbnb. But did you know you can filter searches by scrolling down and selecting “unique stays“? Everyday more camping and glamping options are being added to Airbnb so it’s worth checking in the unique stays sections while on the hunt for a great camping or glamping site.

One of my favorite unique Airbnb stays of all time was this gorgeous glamping yurt in Australia on Great Ocean Road. It perfectly faced the ocean for sunset and we had the entire beach to ourselves!

Harvest Host

If you have a camper van or RV, you can find free amazing campsites through this network of wineries, breweries, distilleries, farms and attractions that invite RVers to stay in any one of the 1274+ campsites.

There is a yearly membership of $79 but the campsites are FREE. It’s only applicable if you have an RV but it’s a cool way to campout somewhere unique!

Tents of any kind aren’t allowed and the van or RV must be fully self contained with a toilet, water tank and inside cooking facilities.

Interested in camping but feel intimidated or don’t own any gear?

Glamping is a great option for new campers because everything is provided for you. But if you don’t have any gear yet and are interested in camping, try an all-inclusive camping trip with a company like Bindlestiff Tours.

These small group trips are great because you don’t have to provide any of your own camping gear- just show up and the guide will have everything you need loaded in the trailer.

Oktoberfest: What To Pack

So you’ve booked your trip, the airfare is bought and in no time at all, you’ll be drinking beer in Munich, Germany with a few million other people at the legendary festival.

Now you’re just wondering what to pack for Oktoberfest?

Before you roll that suitcase out of your house and onto a plane- there’s a few things you’ll want to make sure you bring! From chilly German weather, to the right accessories- there are a few things to keep in mind when you pack!

Dirndl for the ladies or Lederhosen for the men

You don’t technically have to dress up but did you really come all this way to NOT to go in costume?! Of course not.

And this is one of the things I love about Oktoberfest: people really commit.

You will see very few people dressed in normal, every day clothing. Just about everyone wears the traditional outfits. And this only adds to the fun!

You can buy them in Germany or online before the festival starts. If you buy a dirndl that doesn’t come as a set, be sure to buy the white under piece separately.

Oktoberfest Accessories:
Jewelry for the Ladies

Ladies, give your outfit the finishing touch with the traditional style choker necklace and earrings! You can also buy them at the festival.

They tend to look something like this:

Hats for the men

Fellas, you might want to complete the look with the traditional style hat!

Sweater

For those chilly nights in the beer garden, ladies might want a sweater to toss on over their dirndl! You can find cute, cropped cardigans in a color to match your dress.

So you’re warm but it still fits with your German outfit. Success!

Gloves

Unfortunately, it gets COLD at the night most years.

If you plan to be outside riding rides or even walking around after dark- you might want to have a pair of mittens or gloves in your bag for when things cool down.

A Bra that won’t show over your dress

Ladies, the Oktoberfest dresses are well… low cut to say the least! If you typically wear a more full coverage bra- it might show over the top of your dirndl. If you are looking for something low cut with a little boost- this option is very affordable!

Flower Crown

Some ladies (myself included) love to pair a flower crown with their dirndl.

You can buy real flower crowns at the festival but be prepared to spend a fair bit of money on them!

So if you want one you can reuse, you can buy it online ahead of time.

Tights

Again, it’s Germany. Meaning, it’s cold in October at night. I found the festival a lot more enjoyable in the evenings when my legs weren’t totally bare.

Tall socks for warmth

You’ll be fine during the day but socks can make all the difference at night! Plus how cute do they look with the whole ensemble?!

The Right Shoes

Any style of Mary Janes or ballet flats should do the trick for women!

Likewise for men, any dress shoe will work if you don’t want to buy a specific, new pair.

Umbrella

Look ahead at the forecast, it often ends up raining. So it might be worth having an umbrella tucked in your bag to avoid showing up at the festival soaking wet!

Power Bank for Your Phone 

You’re in for a long day at the beer halls!

People tend to show up early and stay until the halls close at night.

Most likely you’ll be taking lots of photos (not to mention embarrassing videos of your friends once they’ve had a few steins!) so don’t let your phone die while you’re out.

It makes getting back to your accommodation and reconnecting with lost friends a lot more difficult.

Purse for your ID, money and phone

An over the shoulder purse or small backpack is less likely to be set down and left behind while drinking. Bonus if it goes with you outfit!

These styles work great depending on how much space you think you’ll need.

Pro tip: Ladies, wear shorts with pockets under your dirndl so you can avoid bringing a bag altogether! The fabric is thick & long enough to hide shorts and then you’ll be less likely to lose anything in the chaos.

How To Survive Oktoberfest with Stoke Travel

If you recently read my guide HOW TO DO MUNICH’S OKTOBERFEST ON A BUDGET then you already know that the Stoke Travel campsite is my go-to place for budget accommodation during Oktoberfest.

But there’s a few things you should know to prepare yourself for Oktoberfest with Stoke Travel- or as they call it: Stoktoberfest!

Pack Warm Layers for the Festival

Ladies, the dirndls are adorable and everyone looks great in them. With such a flattering style, it’s hard to look bad at Oktoberfest. But if you stay out late, chances are good you’ll be freezing cold! Wear tights under your dress for starters. It will be your saving grace!

Also, be sure to pack a cardigan or jacket to toss on over your dress. If you’re riding rides at night or walking around outside, it will be chilly!

I also loved having my fingerless gloves while riding the metro back to the campsite with all the others guests. The party just continues on after the beer halls! But if you’re like me and your hand gets cold easy, have something with you to toss on. Of course, drinking a couple extra beers will also help  

Warm socks are a life saver! If you only have tights on in your shoes, your feet will get cold at night. Come prepared so you can stay warm.

You Can Buy German Outfits At The Campsite, In Munich Or Online Before Arriving

If you show up to Oktoberfest without lederhosen or a dirndl, no worries- Stoke Travel sells the complete outfits in their merch tent. You can also find them in shops around Munich.

But you can also buy them online ahead of time!

Amazon has a wide variety of quality options! Ladies, if you want to avoid looking like a tourist- get the longer skirts. Traditionally the outfits aren’t super short. Skirts usually fall past the knees.

Pack Warm Clothes To Sleep In

You’re camping, it’s fall in Germany. You’d think people would keep this in mind while packing but it never fails that people are undressed and therefore, cold at night.

Not only in their tents but at the festival. Plan accordingly! You’ll probably want to sleep in sweat pants and a sweatshirt + layers, layers, layers in case you hit a cold weekend.  

Pack A Portable Charger

Unless you pay for the upgraded “glamping” option, your tent won’t have a plug to charge your phone. You can get your phone charged at by the Stoke staff at the “Guru” tent but it will really help if you also have a portable charger that you can bring and get charged with it.

It will cost €1-2 to charge you phone & charger each time. And you’ll need to provide your own phone chord as well.

Don’t Over Sleep And Miss Breakfast 

You’ll have to collect a meal ticket from the “Guru tent” before each meal – but with all the unavoidable drinking going on, you won’t want to start your day with an empty stomach.

Make sure you show up before last call!

Bring Your Own Refillable Water Bottle

 You will only be given one Stoke Travel cup for free- after that you’ll have to pay to replace it.

Typically your cup will be full with the free sangria or beer onsite so you’ll want a water bottle as well.

There is water tap at the campsite where you can get refill it 24/7. 

On Weekends, Go To The Beer Halls EARLY!

Oktoberfest draws crowds of six million each year, with the weekends being the busiest time time of the festival. If you’re wanting to go to one of the popular beer halls, you’ll need to go before dinner time on the weekend or you might not be let in. 

Skip Reserving A Table At The Festival

It’s expensive to pre-book the meal and beer vouchers needed to reserve a table and if you’re doing Oktoberfest on a budget (which I’m guessing you are since you’re camping!) it’s not worth it.

You can always sit in the biergartens without a reservation and earlier in the day!

Indulge In Late Night Snacks At The Campsite

Did you know there is such thing as a chicken nugget vending machine? Yeah I didn’t either until I camped with Stoke at Oktoberfest. For €5, you can get a basket of piping hot, freshly fried chicken nuggets.

They also have pizza and french fry vending machines. The machines fry the food right there on the spot and serve it VERY hot. I won’t try to claim this is the healthiest option (ha, obviously not!), but when you come back to the campsite after being at the festival all day- you’re gonna want to fill your belly with something warm. So hello, pizza, nuggets and fries! 

Never Argue With The Oktoberfest Staff

Whether it’s the bouncers at the door, the waitress who just yelled at you for standing on a table or the bathroom monitors- just know, whatever they say, goes!

The staff deal with really drunk people for several weeks on end and just beware, they aren’t known for their patience.

Don’t get kicked out of the festival because you tried to argue with the angry German guard who told you to stop cutting the line. 

Beware The Brutal Fun Houses

It’s Stokie tradition to go through the fun houses at night once every has had a few beers. Only thing is, these Fun Houses are absolute death traps after a drink. Swirling tunnels, bouncing steps, and slides all contribute to many black eyes, bruises and bumps on the head. I won’t say not to do it (it’s a blast!) just know you’re in for a womping.

Pack A Rain Jacket & Umbrella

Check the forecast before your trip! Germany in the fall has frequent rain, so you’ll be a lot more comfortable if you’re prepared .

Ideal job for travelers, gap year students and anyone looking to work abroad

Maybe you’re taking a gap year to travel or perhaps you just finished school and aren’t ready to join the corporate world yet. It could be that you just want to do something fun and interesting to shake up your routine. Whatever the case, if you want to come to Munich, Germany for more than just a weekend of a beer halls- get ready for a bloody good time!

Unless you are German, live locally and speak the language – you’re not going to get a job inside the beer halls.
