Celebrating Holi in India: Essential Tips for an Unforgettable Experience
Holi, India’s iconic Festival of Colors, is a celebration of joy, renewal, and togetherness. For one magical day, cities transform into kaleidoscopes of color as music fills the streets and strangers greet each other like old friends.
While Holi is celebrated across the country, a little planning goes a long way in making your experience both memorable and enjoyable.
Here are five essential tips to help you celebrate Holi in India the right way.

⸻
Tip #1: Pick Udaipur as Your City
If you want a Holi celebration that’s festive without being overwhelming, Udaipur is an ideal choice. Known as the City of Lakes, Udaipur blends royal tradition, scenic beauty, and a relaxed pace that’s perfect for travelers.
Highlights include:
• A traditional royal Holi celebration at the City Palace
• Lively but manageable street festivities
• Rooftop and hotel-hosted Holi parties with lake views
Udaipur offers all the color and joy of Holi—without the chaos found in larger cities.

⸻
Tip #2: Wear Clothes You’re Ready to Say Goodbye To
Holi colors are fun—but they are not gentle on clothing.
What to wear:
• Old clothes you don’t mind staining (white is popular but not required)
• Comfortable footwear with good grip
• Sunglasses to protect your eyes from powder
Avoid anything you love or want to re-wear. Even “washable” colors often leave permanent souvenirs.

⸻
Tip #3: Protect Your Skin, Hair, and Phone
Before heading out, take a few minutes to prep—it makes a huge difference.
Before you celebrate:
• Apply coconut oil or moisturizer to skin and hair
• Tie hair back or cover it with a scarf or hat
• Use a waterproof phone pouch or leave valuables behind
This helps prevent color from sticking and makes cleanup much easier later.

⸻
Tip #4: Choose Where (and How) You Celebrate
Holi can be celebrated in the streets, but organized events are often more comfortable for travelers.
Best options:
• Hotel or guesthouse Holi parties
• Rooftop celebrations with music and food
• Small group events recommended by your hotel
These environments tend to be safer, friendlier, and easier to enjoy—especially if it’s your first Holi.
⸻
Tip #5: Respect the Culture and Know When to Step Back
Holi is joyful and playful, but it’s still a cultural and religious festival.
Keep these tips in mind:
- Celebrate during the main hours (usually morning to early afternoon)
- Start earlier & end earlier
- Avoid heavily intoxicated crowds later in the day
- Most shops, liquor stores & places will be closed on Holi
When the energy shifts, it’s okay to step away, shower off the colors, and enjoy a calm afternoon by the lake.

Tip #6: The Pre-Night Party Is Just As Fun!!
The night before Holi, parties broke out all over Udaipur. There were DJ’s, fireworks, bonfires, and crowds everywhere! The night before wound up being just as much fun (if not more!!) than the actual day of Holi.
Tip #7: Go with a group!
India can be intimidating to travel solo and Holi can be really, REALLY overwhelming. Especially for females travelers, I would look into going with a group!
I personally run trips to India at Holi time with my travel company, Wanderlust Group Trips.

Final Thoughts
Holi is more than just throwing color—it’s about connection, celebration, and shared joy. With the right city, a little preparation, and cultural awareness, it can become one of the most unforgettable travel experiences of your life.
Start with Udaipur, dress smart, protect yourself, choose your celebration wisely, and embrace the magic of the moment. You’re going to love it!
